Best part of the Santorum Surge? Several more weeks of my favorite political euphamism of the year: Rick's "Google Problem." The way political commentators try and dance around the issue is hysterical.

I'd like to see that turn around and bite radical gays in the ass.* Both the webslurring of Santorum AND the intentional outing of closeted gays they don't like are out of bounds behavior, and imo should be punished.

Romney was just asked again about his tax returns on AP radio news. His staff is still saying he won't release them, and said he would likely not even if he won the nomination. I really don't know, has anyone in recent memory not released them in a general? Here is where I think the commentator got it wrong. She said that he most like does not want people to see how much he made and his tax rate.....prob somewhere between 10 and 15% since mostly capital gains. I think he does not want the public to see how much he gave the mormon church as it would be listed as a tax deduction. This is a bigger issue IMO in primary season then the general.

Obama has made the non-release of any personal info entirely acceptable.

How do you suppose it would ever bite Dan Savage in the ass, just out of curiosity? Just talking about it is terribly embarrassing for Santorum, and he can't pretend it'll go away since I'm sure google hits for his name go up as he moves up in the polls. I'm not quite sure how Savage would be "punished" in your eyes.

Since I have nothing else to add, here are 25 people who just Googled 'Santorum' for the first time: http://www.buzzfeed.com/mattcherette/25-people-who-just-googled-santorum-for-the-firs

How the hell would I know? Sometimes there's a rough justice that comes out of the blue and evens up accounts, kind of an 'O. Henry' deus ex machina. Santorum got his, now it's this Savage guy's turn.

I don't think he's hiding anything per se, but I do think he's trying to suppress things that can be used against him...in other words, it's not like he has done anything wrong with his income or taxes, but he doesn't want to turn some voters off with some of his legit activities (Mormon church donations, tax rate, etc.). But this does reinforce some peoples' suspicions of him, that he's the consummate slick politician who will do anything (or avoid any negative factor) that will affect his electability.

Jonah Goldberg writes on NRO: Can we now just admit that everyone is settling in this race. For the last month or so we’ve heard a lot of posturing about the “conservative establishment.” I’ve been pretty skeptical about the uses and abuses of the term. But now that Rick Santorum has replaced Newt Gingrich as . . .

We may be closer to war with Iran than most Americans realize.

  • Yeah, I've been reading that we're really close to fisticuffs. But it's not that we're pushing them towards war...this is just the endgame of the standoff that's been happening for more than a decade.

Iran's not completely blameless here, though...they claim they have the right to decide what traffic can transit the Straits of Hormuz and when, which is just flat out wrong. So we sent the USS Stennis there to prove freedom of navigation there, and they took exception to it and threatened retaliation if it happened again. They're wrong on this, completely.

Also, the school of thought in the middle east is that Iran is itching for a limited clash with us at a time and place of their choosing, which will benefit them somewhat in the region.

Yep...and it's probable that a lawsuit will arise from this, which would be the perfect foil for Obama's scheme to pick a fight with Congress here.

  • Excerpt...what's funny is that Iran thinks they can control the "limits" of conflict here, especially if they start it:

The armies of Saudi Arabia and fellow Gulf Cooperation Council states stood ready Thursday Jan. 5, for Washington to stand up to Iranian threats and send an aircraft carrier or several warships through the Strait of Hormuz into the Persian Gulf. Riyadh has been leaning hard on the Obama administration not to let Tehran get away with its warning to react with "full force" if the USS Stennis aircraft carrier tried to reenter the Gulf or Iran's pretensions to control the traffic transiting the world's most important oil route.

Wednesday night, the Iranian parliament began drafting a bill prohibiting foreign warships from entering the Gulf without Tehran's permission.

debkafile's Washington sources report that Saudi Arabia has warned the Obama administration that Iranian leaders mean what they say; their leaders are bent on provoking a military clash with the United States at a time and place of their choosing, rather than leaving the initiative to Washington. To this end, Iranian officials are ratcheting up their belligerence day after day.

Notwithstanding their military inferiority, the Iranians believe they can snatch a measure of success from a military confrontation, just as the Lebanese Hizballah did in the 2006 war against Israel. In any case, they expect any clash to be limited – at least at first. The two sides will begin by feeling for the opposite side's weaknesses while endeavoring to hold the line against a full-blown war.
