Indecision 2012 - Obama vs. Romney Thread

  • Yeah I'm sure politicians aren't passing these laws because they're potentially politically advantageous but rather because they're concerned about democracy in our great nation.

    Don't make me vomit.

Honestly, re-read your last sentence and tell me which scenario makes more sense in our modern political climate, what you claim is the reason for these laws or the reason I think these laws are being passed.

No, I'm challenging your broad assertion that large segments of people "are ONLY in favor of these laws not because of some imagined widespread voter fraud, but because these laws are going to disproportionately disenfranchise the democrat constituency." Yes, because there's no room for the possibility that seem people are just uncomfortable with the idea of people walking into polling stations and casting votes when they aren't legally allowed to do so.

No one is challenging your earnestness on this issue. The reality is, if a change in voter ID laws benefited D's instead of R's, it would be the democrats pushing the issue. This has nothing to do with ideology and everything to do with power. Anyone who believes any different is simply naive.

  • This morning the people at the polls were supposed to ask for ID. It wasn't required, but it was sort of a dry run for November. The senile guy who was flabbergasted when I politely refused and then took a lifetime to find the "on" switch of my voting machine gave me very little confidence in how the operation was going to work when you have millions instead of thousands

They are...but your posts make clear that you're largely opposing these laws because they're potentially politically disadvantageous. So spare us the self-righteous nonsense as if you're making some principled argument here.

Yes, because your argument isn't oozing self-righteousness.....

Have you ever been on the side of an argument that you didn't feel pompous about arguing for? Serious question Mr. Bear Patrol.

  • Interesting that the Obama's campaign recent pivot in his general election line of attack against Mitt came from Bill Clinton.

I only feel pompous about my side of the argument when I'm confronted by notably weak arguments in response, especially those made by people who are extremely stubborn and convinced of the brilliance of their arguments. Thankfully, for me, that happens a lot more on the internetz than it does when interacting with people in real life.

  • Obama was at UNC earlier today (Tuesday) first giving a speech about student loans (basic politicking, but rates are set to rise in July). But the actual cool thing was they taped Fallon's show on campus (airing now) with Obama, DMB, and The Roots. Don't really care what your politics are, that's a badass event to have on camps. They held it in a hall with only 1500 seats and made it an online registration deal where seniors got priority, so basically only seniors got to go. I graduated last year :dagger

You know, when you're on the same side of an argument as SATerp and Mr. Moozlem, and you're asking if I'm retarded, well you might want to rethink your stance at that point.

Unless you're going to sit here and tell me politicians tend to not do things because they benefit themselves.

To be fair, all his arguments ooze self-righteousness, so maybe that's just his natural state.

No one's arguing that. But interesting you keep harping on that without even acknowledging the possibility that Democrats may oppose voter ID laws because that benefits them.

    terps99

  • The democrats want the extra votes and the republicans want to prevent them...end of debate.

Now back on topic, Mitt copying Clinton in 1992 is a very smart move

Side note: googling 'failed Bush policies' returns 37 million results and by the end of this election I expect that to double since it still seems to be a main theme of democrats

That sounds like a guy who's running for VP, or at least someone trying to bump up his national profile for 2016.

I'd say the latter. Christie did the same thing. I think it'd be less of a smart move if he were angling for VP, because a speech like that might conflict with some of Romney's views on foreign policy, so he'd have to answer for that almost immediately.

I don't recall articulating an argument on the voter ID topic. But please, carry on with your abuse of logic and reason.

Agreed. That makes more sense at this point.
