If you have a job

  • I'm ballparking here, but he is 25 years old and graduated in four years from UMBC with a MechE degree. He wasn't present but a couple of leads were talking to us interns today about possibilities after school and they mentioned him and specifically, and specifically talked about the aforementioned information.

i'm pretty sure that if you are smart enough to get into medical school you are smart enough to realize the economics and earning potential of a career in medicine.

Only problem is the insurance companies are pretty much controlling your earning potential.

Add in Medicare and Medicaid reimbursements.

I'm out of work also. Company canceled my project (2nd time this has happened in two years) and this time didn't have another place I could land. I need to become a java programmer or something - mathematicians don't seem to be in great demand, even though "data analytics" is a hot buzz word. These days any mathematician basically has to be a programmer as well, so I'm thinking of changing my resume to call myself a software engineer. Problem is, I'd prefer a job as a mathematician. I'll keep looking, but in a few months I may go ahead and change that resume.

do you have a clearance? I know a group looking for you if you don't mind some

  • I know everyone on the suque is a millionaire who owns their own recession-proof business, but a relatively guaranteed income for a professional service sole practitioner of 150-250K/year is nothing to sneeze at.

I realize the gratification that a UPS driver gets everyday, not to mention the shorts they're provided with, so it must be a difficult professional decision for many.

  • actually ups drivers do well.. not doctor well, but very well in their own right.

  • I'd have to question how many primary care physicians actually consider their job gratifying. I'm sure they have days where they would love to hop on the brown truck and drive as opposed to listening to patient Smith beg for pain medicine at 3am.

One of my friend's dad is a UPS tractor trailer driver. They are unionized, so basically each day he drives from baltimore, to philly, over to jersey and back home. Somewhere around 400 miles total. But they have a nice house and seem to be doing well, I'd imagine he makes pretty good money.

It's not every day you get rich and wreck the economy of an entire nation, and then have your corrupt schemes bailed out by the same class of taxpayers you ccterped. The fact that you get to post about how great things are for you and how everyone should be so gifted is the icing on the cake for you, isn't it?

Countdown until goterps reminds us that driving a truck is not as prestigious as practicing medicine.

you're doing it wrong. Going through the on-line resume application at XYZ Company is a waste.

Do any of your extended family members have decent jobs? ask around.

Did you go to a Church growing up? ask some of the people there you know.

Do you have some friends that graduated a few years ago that are doing ok? Or better yet, are some of your friends parents doing well at manager/VP level positions? Maybe they can send your resume directly to HR instead of it ending up in a stack of 400 other identical resumes.

My recommendation: Go to T. Rowe Price, take a phone position for a year making 30k and then start trying to move up. It is 100x easier to jump to another department in a better position when you already work for that company than trying to come in from the outside.

its really crazy how jobs result from these secondary and tertiary relationships.

I'm going through all them too. Trust me. Why not throw my hook in here too and see if something bites ;)

And general rule of thumb for me is, if I am going to apply via some website, I normally try to get a contact with someone in their HR/Recruitment department first.

  • Was going to go into work today for 7 hours. Got up at 530, got ready, everything. Drove 20 minutes down the road before I realized I didn't have my security badge. Called up the office, they told me not to bother coming in as it would be an easy day anyway. So now I get my Saturday back, sort of. I still am annoyed about it though because it feels like my day is thrown out of whack.

There's very little Wall or Main Street on this board anymore. It's mostly kids and/or government workers.

  • great thread.

just because a firm has openings, doesn't mean they are just going to hire any clown off the street. companies spend a crap load of money to on-board even entry level positions. not to mention the costs of disposing said clowns.

i remember talking to the cfo of the last company i worked at. he said that for a $40K a year position, they were dishing out over $50K for onboarding, etc.
