How bad will this Transformers movie be?

  • Old School is so overrated. It had ONE scene that made me laugh out loud (dart in neck)

Old School is overrated, but still a pretty solid comedy. I usually watch part of it when I find it on cable. The wedding scene at the beginning/Dan Band song are still great.

Back on topic, I am fully expecting Transformers 3 to be a mess, but I still gotta see it. I'm also disappointed about no Megan Fox.

  • I thought Old School was pretty funny at the time but it hasn't aged well. Still worth the occasional watch on basic cable though. Even worse is Dodgeball. I definitely thought that was hilarious when I first saw it and I watched it on FX last night and only chuckled a few times. Same with Zoolander. Ben Stiller just had America under some kind of witchcraft in the early 2000s and it has clearly faded.

Well, I just saw a screening of Transformers, and I was totally wrong! Forget Morgan whatever her name was -- this new girl's got the goods!

    @KenTremendous
I would say in order of best to worst, it now goes Transformers 3, Transformers 1, Transformers 2. Curious what they do in 4.

I hated Old School the first time. Loved it the second time I saw it, for whatever reason. I've always loved Dodgeball, but I'll admit I haven't seen it in a couple years.

No movie ever will be as bad to watch in a theater as Congo.

But hey, at least Jimmy Buffett had an acting cameo in it!

not many movies let you see what happens when a laser cannon obliterates an intelligent gorilla

I don't know what you mean, but it had the cadence of a joke.

    Terrence Malick disagrees: http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/news/a322164/ben-stiller-dressed-as-zoolander-for-terrence-malick.html

"Production designer Jack Fisk, who has worked on all of Malick's films, said: 'I think Zoolander is one of Terry's favorite movies ever. He watches it all the time, and he likes quoting it.'"

As for Transformers, AO Scott at the NYT gave it a surprisingly good review - but it was begrudging.

"I can’t decide if this movie is so spectacularly, breathtakingly dumb as to induce stupidity in anyone who watches, or so brutally brilliant that it disarms all reason..."

  • Zoolander is HILARIOUS. Never gets enough love.

Also I will still fight anyone that says Superbad is not a Top 2 comedy (with Anchorman) in this current comedic era.

  • Rolling Stone kills it as well, a particularly hilarious review.

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon — high on any list of the worst blockbusters ever (move over Green Lantern, you've been bitch-slapped) — is a movie bereft of wit, wonder, imagination, and any genuine reason for being. Watching it makes you die a little inside. Is this the future of movies? God help us! Michael Bay, you've done it again."

Transformers 3 being hailed as "good" is the ultimate Michael Bay jedi mind trick. He's baiting studios to bankroll more Transformers movies the way Coltsfan baits ... well, everyone.

Here's the basic big summer movie flowchart/cycle that most movies have followed, applied to the Transformers series.

(On a related note: What was the last GOOD summer blockbuster that didn't get a sequel? ID4? That was made 16 years ago!)

Transformers 1: GOOD. "OMG SO MUCH MONEY! LET'S MAKE A SEQUEL!"

Transformers 2: GOD AWFUL. "But, hey! Look how much money we made!" The $$$ carry over immediately triggers a third movie.

Transformers 3: DECENT. "Uh-oh. We better make this one half decent or we won't be able to keep making money off this franchise!" Bay makes it rain yet again.

Transformers 4: Awfuler than Transformers 2, but the $$$$ carry over immediately triggers a fifth movie.

    Transformers 5: WHY?

    ===Repeat cycle=======

I'd double check on 3 being decent, haha. I refuse to see this monstrosity and continue to fund such terrible film-making.

  • Transformers 4 is where the franchise dies because TF 3 won't make enough money, so they'll end up cutting back on special effects (see: Jurassic Park 3). Transformers 4 will be like a side adventure for the new chick where she finds some hunk guy and only Bumblebee and one of the racist robots will fight the Decepticon tapes.

  • I think it's interesting that the terrible Transformers movie made so much money despite being awful but the terrible GI Joe movie flopped. I would have swore the GI Joe movie would have been the bigger commercial success.

The 2nd movie made a ton of money because of the first.

Just like Spiderman 3 made a crap ton of money despite sucking, because 2 was so good.

It's the anticipation that sells the tickets.

    bkmalik

  • i enjoyed it. thought it was even better than the first one.

Yes, if tickets were sold after the movie, it would be a different story, eh?

  • Visual effects and the action scenes were amazing to look at. I though 3D was worth it just for that. After that there wasn't much. Movie seemed way to long and drawn out and the dialogue is horribly cheesy.

And why am I supposed to believe the robots would have any use at all for human slaves?

  • I thought it was awesome. Dialogue was a little corny and forced in some scenes but to be real, the charm of this movie is blowing s*** up. They actually did a decent job replacing megan fox, they addressed the fact that she was in the other movies instead of just changing her out. New girl was actually pretty good imo not to mention a complete slampiece (hotter than fox imo).

    TerpMan08

  • definitely hotter and a better actor.

  • I'm gonna be real about it (although it will be trendy on this board to pan it and assume film snob status); it was fun, and a solid way to spend a few hours being entertained. Much, muccccch better than 2.

  • There was literally a 30 minute stretch of the movie that didn't need to be in there. I'm talking the action scene when they are in the collapsing building and the time around that. I'd say about half way through I thought it was going to be a good movie, but the second half sucked. It was like they felt obligated to put those scenes in the movie because they spent so much money on them.
