  • Terpa Firma is right. Waterproofing is a waste of money. You gotta get the water running away from the house.

  • Yeah, getting the water away is the best solution. Our situation sucked because it involved a yard that is graded towards the house, trees that dump gutter clogging crap on the roof, renters who don't do shit and a humid basement that grows mold. We did it mainly for the mold resistant material.

  • Anyone ever haggle with the driveway guy? Or do you just accept the estimate and bend over? So far I've gotten and have three on the way.

    Repaving? Sealing?

Usually fixing the water flow issues outside is going to be a lot more effective than anything you do to the inside of the basement (although doing both is probably the best solution).

So my hot tub stopped heating all the way. I call the repair place, dude is 3 hours late. I pay $230 for him to fix the issue but since you have to wait several hours for the water to heat you can't verify that its been fixed until later that night. Issue isn't fixed. Repair guy wants another $85 + parts to come out and do something else to the hot tub to try to fix the exact same issue. Going back and forth with the manager now, but why the heck would I have to pay the guy again? I need to find a new hot tub guy.

Google your hot tub. I was lucky; found out a $20 flow sensor was the likely culprit, not heating elements, control module, etc.

  • Does anyone have an uncovered garage door/ motor. Our motor went haywire. I'm pretty sure it's because its more exposed to the elements than a typical garage door motor but I can't figure out how to fix it and I haven't found a motor made for outdoor use.

Cut off the water supply to your foundation and you will never see a drop. During rain storms, my sump pump would run constantly. I regraded and the pump hasn't run in 2 years.

This...my parents had the same problem and then finally paid a guy to regrade the front of the house and haven't had a leak since.

    9/21/2010...RIP Old IMS.

I'm going to have them rip up the whole thing and put down a new one with better grade. The current driveway is the original one from 1975 I would guess. And, it has pulled away from the house a little bit and is a big source of the water coming in.

  • Did a lot of temp fixes over the weekend that held up well in yesterday's rain, the basement walls are now almost dry with the help of fans and dehumdifier.

By end of month will have new driveway and gutters, and improved drainage. Should take care of the problem.

  • Installed a HUGE (73" x 120") window in our living room last week. The window that was previously in there was 84"x132" and we couldn't even order another one as large so we had to frame in 6" on each side.

This weekend we made a window seat and trimmed in the window. We kilzed it (second picture) and will have it painted in the next week or two.

Don't mind the Carolina Blue walls - those are changing VERY soon (ugh).

  • We're getting our exterior windows and doors replaced. Having the first guy come out for an estimate on Wednesday. Prepared to bend over.

Did you need a crane to lift that thing? Looks heavy as crap.

being vinyl it wasn't too terrible. My buddy and I lifted it up into the opening with my wife guiding us. The hardest part was not breaking the solid center pane... vinyl is very flexible and that's a $600 window.

Not to threadcap...another home improvement question.

Want to convert my electric cooktop to gas. Have gas coming into the house already, just need a new line run. How much does something like this cost? Anyone have a good gas/plumber they'd recommend in the G-burg/Rockville area?

Don't be a pussy. Man up and run the gas line yourself. I mean, what could possibly go wrong?

Get at least 3 estimates and do not overpay for Anderson, they are good but not worth the money. When we bought out old old house the first thing we did was replace the original windows and the estimates varied by thousands. 10 years later I'm convinced we got the right ones at the right price.

  • Anyone have a reasonable bathroom remodel guy in MontCo (Rockville) area? Thanks.

Yeah, we've got Pella coming out for an estimate this week, and will then get at least two more. Any recommendations (brands/installers) in the NoVa area, anyone?

Is Weathershield any good? (I know nothing about windows).

  • It is an aluminum clad product and comparable to all of the other name brands. Kolbe & Kolbe, Pella, Pozzi (now sold under the Jeld Wen premium label) Marvin. If you are looking for an architecturally correct product that has high value then you really can't go wrong with any of them. If your goal is an energy efficient product with aesthetics low on the list them I suggest vinyl, but a good one - not one of these single location manufacturer/installation companies. It may be worth looking at a sash pack product. That gives you two new sash and two new jamb liners while leaving the frame of the window in place, assuming it is still in good shape. All of the clad companies have a version of that as well as Andersen. The Renewal product (AW) are all made to order and are very expensive. If you are going that route the aluminum clad companies are probably less expensive, especially if you can use standard sizes.

  • The toilet in my basement keeps running water. The flap thingy (yeah, that's how much I know about this stuff) appears to be tightly sealed, the water level raises to what seems to be appropriate, the chain isn't tangled or anything.. what gives?

If I stick something in the tank to even slightly raise the water level (like my hand), it stops. Halp.

    HEY you suck

  • This says it better than I could.
