  • Am I the only one that is ridiculously excited for this little movie event?

  • DVR is set. Bonus points for Jena Malone - always liked her since Donnie Darko.

  • Very interested.

  • I was watching Swamp People last night and they kept showing little mini-previews for it and so far everything I've seen looks pretty solid. This is going to be all kinds of awesome!

Random fact: I also love the song they play in all the previews, Bartholomew by The Silent Comedy.

  • You know I'm excited for it!

So much awesomeness in one series

  • My wife's family is from southern West Virginia / far south-western VA - Grundy, Hurly, Guesses Fork area. They claim relations on the Hatfield side. If you have ever been to Hurly (and God help you), it really hasn't changed that much since then.

I'm a descendent of the Hatfields as well. My grandfathers, great grandmother was a Hatfield......and I have no idea where they lived, although my Dad would know.

I think that makes us transitive in-laws? :p

  • It was supposed to be over at the McCoy's place this year, although there was some disagreement, and then they couldn't decide on a time, and now it looks like the Hatfields might not even come. It is all a big mess.

  • Looks good enough to set the DVR.

Grundy? Were they there when the flood basically moved the town?

Awesome. My Grandfather is from Norton (not too far away from Grundy) and his mother was a McCoy. I guess this means that HTG and I have to hate each other.

And, yes, Otto, Grundy is the place that got wiped out by a flood in 1977 and had to be moved.

Yes, but they were from further up the mountain and not affected too much as far as I know. If you have been to Grundy recently (and by recently, I mean in the last decade or so because I haven't been back there since her father's funeral), you can see how that town flooded: it is a steep valley with a creek running right through the center of town, with houses and buildings built right over the creek in some cases. The question is not why did the town get destroyed in a flood, but rather wtf did they rebuild in exactly the same place? There is, however, a relatively modern hospital up on the hill - I met an Indian doctor, I am pretty sure the only Hindu in Buchanan County.

It's testing my memory too much to recall specifics, but I'm pretty sure in his book, Roy Williams says he is a descendent of the hatsfields or mccoys. Goes onto talk about how he's embarassed by it or something. I wish I remembered what he said better.

A lot of the mountain towns are similar in that area. I have a lot of relatives from Grundy to the bluefield area. I've heard stories of being related to both the hatfields and McCoys, I assume its possible because the family has been in the area since the early 1800s but I would bet a lot of people are not really related and I'm probably not either. But it adds to the lore and the interest.

    Pic Sigs are for losers.

  • I'm a cousin of the Hatfields.

  • Wait this is a dramatic mini-series/movie and not a documentary? Awful news. Bad actors too. If they were good actors they wouldn't be in it. The History Channel is basically garbage now.

BTW you should all watch the First Annual National History Bee on 6/1 at 8 PM. Filmed right here in DC!

  • I think they put up some major flood walls or something. One of my close friends moved to Grundy about a year ago to manage their Gamestop in the new shopping center and he says they have done a ton of work to mitigate flooding.

The shopping center (which is basically Wal-Mart on stilts) is the new center of commerce in town.
