Handgun Debate

A man in Ohio is told by 911 dispatchers not to persue a kid he found "suspicious". The man goes after him anyway, leading to a confrontation in which the teenager is shot and killed.

It turns out the kid was not armed and only possesed skittles and iced tea.

It also turns out the man had previously been arrested for assaulting a cop.

I am not for trampling anyone's second amendment rights, but why is someone with a history of assault allowed to own a gun? I also fail to see the need to carry a concealed weapon around your neighborhood, because this is what happens.

  • For every one of those you can find one where an old man or woman defends themselves from armed intruders. If you take guns away from everyone only the criminals will have them.

I agree with you. I'm not a big gun guy, I don't own one, but I don't believe they should be outlawed.

It is concerning to me that someone with a record is out driving around with a handgun looking for trouble. I draw a distinction between defending your home and shooting people in the street.

  • I just read the article. Based on this article it seems that the kid was murdered. It seems odd that they didn't hold and charge him. There isn't enough information.

As far as the assult charge, it just said he was arrested for it. Was he convicted? Maybe he wasn't thats why they said his record is squeeky clean.

  • Im not sure what this case means in terms of gun control but that cat should be at leastbe arrested. He isnt a cop and skittles arent a deadly weapon.

I definitely said I agreed with this in my post, but at the same time I fail to see how the 2nd amendment covers what happened in this story.

  • If he didn't have a gun he would have used something else. Obviously the guy has anger management issues (I didn't read the article)

I'm unfamiliar with Florida laws regarding guns, but seeing as he wasn't arrested at all I'm assuming the gun was registered and he was allowed to own it.

Obviously he was aquitted of his previous charge, as I'm pretty sure convicted felons can't own guns, legally, anywhere. So he absolutely has the right to own a gun under our laws, which is what you're questioning is it not?

If you want to debate on whether or not he should be charged with a crime for what he did, or if he had the right to USE the firearm in that situation then you should probably reword your first post.

  • The guy has a track record of violence, and used a gun to murder an unarmed person in cold blood.

This is exactly the type of person that should not have access to guns, and to have not been charged for this is an outrage.

    GunnerOne 84

  • There is another article better than this one that describes what happened and how this guy is going to get away with it.

Basically Florida doesn't have a retreat law. You are allowed to confront anyone that poses a threat to your safety. The problem is the law isn't worded to say you can't chase down a 'threat' and kill them, which apparently this guy did after the cops brushed off his call to them.

Disgusting events though. Dude needs to be made an example of, not allowed to weasel his way out of justice through legal wording loop holes.

    terpevo

  • Damn, couple of years ago you didn't have to let blacks vote in Florida. Now you can kill them??

this, 1 time he was charged with battery on a law enforcement officer... not convicted.

Not defending the guy and what he did here, he absolutely deserves to be charged here.

  • Just listened to the 911 tapes. Pretty fucking chilling. Kid screaming help, BLAM, silence.

  • Those who hide behind the words of the Second Amendment have never carried a shooting victim's casket/attended the funeral. I'm convinced of this.

It is meanless as far as gun control is concerned. That asswipe who shot that kid would have had the gun regardless of laws.

There are many caskets which can be carried. I am betting that criminals shooting innocents fill far more caskets.

  • I don't believe Trayvon would be out of jail if the roles were reversed. The self defense argument never works for Black youth even though many urban youth carry guns for that very purpose.

  • this asshole needs to be thrown in jail and if he is not prosecuted the cops and the prosecutors in that area need to lose their jobs as well.

  • If the locals dont step up and do their jobs, i have a feeling the feds will step in and do it for them with some kind of civil rights deal.

For them not even to arrest the guy is so mind numbing in 2012. Arrest him and let him prove self defense in court.

    BrotherAbstract

  • I'm confused at how anyone is buying the self defense line after the guy clearly went after the kid and tried to mug him for his skittles.

Again, if you take the guns away from law abiding citizens, only the criminals will have them.
