Goodbye Thirsty Turtle

What about the people that walk to and from bars? They're not mugging material?

Most of Turtle's customers were underclassmen, meaning almost all of them live on campus. Turtle borders campus, so there isn't much opportunity to get mugged between there and the campus boundaries. Muggings happen on Knox/Hartwick/Guilford/Berwyn House, where the off campus houses are.

  • You can certainly get mugged ON campus, south campus near the bars especially because it's not as well lit. I don't know about their being any uptick in crime because of this but it is just a disgrace how Brown rules CP with an iron fist and is hostile to any bar that provides competition. Bentley's and Cornerstone have plenty of underaged kids in there, how often do the police target them?

  • I'm like 99% certain that I know TerpDaddy's secret bar.

And in response to something earlier, muggings most certainly will happen on campus. During my time a kid was shot in the ass at the commons and another kid was mugged outside Tydings skipping class in the afternoon

  • some of the posts here are comical and completely illlogical.

nevermind that the cause of this whole closing process was caused by a dude stabbed AT the Turtle. But closing it will of course lead to tons of muggings. Therefore the only solution to keep everyone safe is to replace all retial outlets with bars ASAP or the thugs win!

  • Yeah seriously, people are pissed that a bar lost its liquor license for letting under 21 students in without an ID? LOL what do you expect?

  • A) Show me a college town in America where the bars don't let in people underaged
    B) Why do Cornerstone and Bentley's never catch shit for the underaged people they serve on a nightly basis?

Becuase they aren't as completely blatant as the Turtle was?

  • No one is saying that muggings don't happen on campus. Historicus and I are trying to say that you are MORE likely to get robbed in CP during the night hours off campus than on.

And much more likely to get mugged if you're going to a party and not a bar.

    Makes good sense.

Students don't know how good they have it when they can just hop on the Green Line and go to real, decent bars in U Street, Chinatown etc.

Those areas were garbage when I was a student but I assume most will just stay inside the College Park bubble.

You realize how expensive those bars are for a college kid, I hope?

I can't imagine any amount of money would make him sell. He's banging a bunch of the waitresses there. At least he use to.

For one, John got remarried last year, I think his waitress days are over.

And two, the place has been for sale for several years, but the price is absurd. The only value in the place is the liquor license. With that location in the RE isn't worth that much. Christ, just to fix the bathrooms alone is going to set back the new owner a bundle.

Jesus christ. Most kids going to Turtle are underage freshmen which means they live in the dorms, so their walk to the bars is on campus. Since Turtle is closing, there is a rising number of students walking downtown on College/Knox/Hartwick Rd's where actual muggings occur off campus. Since there will be more kids walking downtown looking for a party, the crime rate will likely rise.

  • It's pretty hysterical that a place like SUNY Oswego has a better nightlife than College Park.

  • Does EJ's landing still have Thursday Karaoke? That was pretty fun if you go with a large group of people. Pretty easy to get into as well.

    Good logic.

Glad "actual" muggings only occur on Knox/Hartwick.

So Terpsandskins logic, if I'm following...

    1) Bar is illegally serving underage patrons who are illegally drinking
    2) Said bar is closed
    3) Crime will rise

Seems to be crime rate is falling by taking care of the problem in step 1, no?

  • 2 things cant happen in CP to get a bar shutdown:
    1. blatantly letting underage kids in w/o an id in, in mass volume. these kids showed their effin 18yr old id and were let in. atleast have a fake.
    2. obviously the violence part - cant have stabbings at bars. look at the kind of crowd that place attracted, and then tell me it wasnt inevitable

did john brown play a part in the sanctions? yeah, probably. did turtle bring it on themselves? absolutely

i think john brown's quote for bentleys is nothing less than 6mil

    shuklad

  • Turtle attracted 18-20 year old white college kids. Aside from a few bros from Jersey pushing and shoving Turtle hardly brought any kind of "real" violence on itself.
