Game of Thrones Mafia -- Looking for 1 sub

Well, now that my last exam is done, and my work doesn't start until the 21st, I have exactly a week for mafia for the foreseeable future and might as well run a game. I ran a GoT game last spring, but most people didn't know about the books or show -- I figured it might be more fun to people now that they know the story.
It'll only be through what has been shown on the show (so, no spoilers beyond season 2, episode 7). Haven't decided whether to make it a traditional game or not.

I guess this isn't a bad place to ask, at what point in the book series can I begin to watch season 1?

There will be characters introduced in season 2 who you probably don't know about who will be included.
I'll keep things as non-spoilery as I can.
Not sure what your second question is asking. Season 1 basically covers the first book to a T.

The very last episode of season 1 has one or two storylines which go further than the first book, but only marginally so. The two I can think of are picked up almost immediately to start book 2 and are only teased in the show.
You can certainly watch season 1 without spoiling anything major before starting book 2 if you're doing the books first before the show.
