  • How about Fred Funk making it! I heard he was pretty excited. There is a chance he shows up at the UM course this afternoon. It's been a few years since he saw the course. The guy that won the Nationwide event last week averaged 24 putts per round which equates to 12 one putt greens per round. That's sick! Both of the guys that tied for second averaged about 28 putts per round. It's pretty easy to see how he won be 12 stokes.

  • Hey Gang,

I hurt my back earlier this spring and haven't touched a club all year. I've been so agitated by it that haven't opened this thread until now.....

I'm feeling a bit better and thinking of hitting the range this afternoon. If there's room I'd love to come out on the 17th.?. I'll probably stink but will be good for comic relief and I've been known to buy a drink or two......can I get in? bashful

  • Westwood, Molinari, Mickelson and Luke Donald played the course yesterday, but apparently they only played 9 holes as I grabbed a cart and searched the back nine and didn't see any players out there, came back to the bar and was told they had stopped after 9. People told me Molinari was a super friendly guy and he talked with anyone who came up to him, not so w/ Donald.

Early this morning there were 4 officers hanging by the 1st tee, wonder what that means?

Slorry to hear about the back but I really enjoyed playing with you and hope you feel up to it. If not you can always wait for us in the bar, then re-live your glory days of hitting a half court shot in 1963.

24 putts per round isn't good if he only hit 10% GIR. You need to look at both statistics together. Obviously his GIR must have been good if he won by that much.

He lead in both putts per round and putts per GIR so he was making everything.

He hit 13, 12, 12, and 12 greens. 1 eagle, THIRTY ONE birdies, 36 pars, 4 bogies. Just an unreal performance:

Actually, 24 putts is still good if you hit 10% of the greens. If you 2 putt the 2 greens you hit then you have to get up and down on 12 of the other 16 holes. Unless you miss those 12 greens on the fringe and stayed out of green side bunkers and rough, then the you have a great short game. With the rough around the greens, getting up and down 12 out of 16 times is still impressive.

  • I've always felt that the number of putts in a round is very deceiving, especially for amateurs like us. Miss enough greens and you will be chipping. Hit a lot of greens with a mid iron and you will be 30 feet often. The number of putts in a round is as much an indication of your iron play as it is your putting that day. Probably more so.

I agree to an extent. However, it's not like when most of us miss the green, we're on the fringe and can easily chip to a few feet away. Unless your short game is really good for an amateur, you're still going to end up with plenty of putts that pros make and you don't.

I find it more useful to look at holes individually and figure out where my putting really could have made a difference on a hole. How many 3-putts, how many 2-putts that should have been 1-putts, etc.

Maybe I feel this way because chipping is my strength. But even if it wasn"t common sense tells you a chip will leave most anyone way closer to the hole than a 7 iron.

Of course, but at the same time, the average golfer who misses a green from 150 yards, after their chip/pitch/blast/whatever, will still have a putt longer than anyone would consider a gimme. If you start turning those 8-footers into one-putts instead of two-putts, you're going to be doing a lot better.

  • What's the latest on the 17th? It's my last day of work before taking a vacation so there's lots I should be doing but -- I'd definitely blow everything off for a chance to play golf. Has there been a headcount yet?

You don't have to make the up and down. Hitting a green could leave you with a 40 footer, hence a 3 whack.

I've played. It's fine for the cost. Very short almost executive course. Pretty tight.

Funny you wrote this. On Sunday I cut out for a quick nine and Rattlewood was jammed so I went there for only the 2nd time. It was VERY interesting. It was a place for retreats back in the day, the clubhouse was the old mess hall and you can still see one of the original cabins. It is extremely hilly, don't even think of walking. Very short, with 5 par 3's and 4 par 4's on the front. And don't get me wrong, it is not even close to being a great course. But it is interesting and the greens were actually in great shape, which was not the case my previous time out there. The entire time I was playing I kept thinking "i can't believe I'm in the same town where I live. I feel like I'm on vacation and am playing one of those mountain courses"

But it's a killer combo of being a beginner course that is extremely tight and full of trees. I told myself I was not going to lose any Pro VI's on this course so I teed off with found balls, then switched. The best hole was #8, a par 4 where you tee off of a huge ledge and the fairway is really far below you. The ball seems to hang in the air forever. But for the most part you hit mid irons off the par 4 tees (if you are smart) and wedges into the green. By the way I shot my career low 32 on Sunday. OK par was 31 but still.

  • Hope Valley certainly isn't a nice course or anything, but its one of my favorites because its so damn cheap and usually maintained in a semi-decent shape
