  • Played behind Tom Watson yesterday and sat next to Fred Funk at the bar, told him to win one for the Terps!

  • The Seniors are in town, right? And it's free? Details my man details.

  • Correct, they are playing the new, improved Avenel. Funk told me that the new Avenel is realy a tough course. It is free I'm told

Have you not played the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farms (like whose not going to call it Avenel.) Played it a couple of times and it is much more difficult than the old Avenel. Despite what Greg Norman says, I think they've screwed up the 9th. I really liked the old elevation change. Now it's pretty much a flat shot (might even be considered slightly uphill.) What I really find interesting is that the practice green is right behind the 9th green. If you are practicing on the practice green, you would be advised to pay attention to those teeing off on 9. Balls will land on it. Number 10 is a real cool par 5 (not reachable - too much trouble from 100 yards in.) #6 is now a simple par 4 instead of a risk/reward par 5. Used to love watching the pros trying to go for it in two.

  • So I go in the other room and turn on the tv and who do I see? I see my golf buddy Derek Lowe pitching for the Braves tonight, pretty exciting for me cause I'm never up this late and I never watch baseball.

  • So I went to Mike O'Barsky's Long Drive clinic at Blue Mash today. He gave me a couple of things to work on that I think will help. One thing I liked about the clinic was I was sore afterward - the training drills he had us doing took some effort. It also helps to know what strength/flexibility areas to focus on.

Aside: The guy is about 5'8", 150 lbs, probably in his 50's, all muscle, and he hits the ball a mile. He uses a driver with a 47" shaft, which takes strength and timing to make good contact consistently. He's got 10 different drivers, depending on wind conditions, what trajectory he wants, whether he wants to hit a fade or a draw, and if his timing is a little off he'll switch to club with a slightly shorter shaft length.

He's going to the Re/Max Long Drive Championship in two weeks. I looked at last year's results, he didn't do that well. Longest drive was 349, and it took 370 to win it (Super Senior division). Got to give him credit, for his size, to even be in the running is amazing.

Oh man that sucks. I Used to always go to 6, my favorite spot on the course, to watch that second shot. Remember the tree on the right that they would just miss on their approach?

Did you ask him about his club fitting and whether that might help you? Like 2More said to you and I agreed, you don't have a stiff enough shaft...I'm sure O'Barsky would have addressed that with you while you were there????

Congo do you still have my cell phone number?

No, I brought it up but he just wanted me to make an appointment for a fitting. He did say that stock Taylor Made shafts flex a lot in the middle instead of down at the tip, and that could be an issue.

BTW the wind was blowing out pretty strong, so it was easy to feel like you were hitting it long and be relaxed - I usually tense up a lot when hitting into the wind. One of Mike's mantras was to be relaxed. He is all about clearing your head of swing thoughts, just focus on getting to the proper finish.

when i felt your driver it seemed like it had a softer stiff shaft if that makes sense.

  • So I played a LOT of golf when I was in high school, but then didn't play much in college. Most of my post-college friends don't play, so I've never really picked it back up. But I'm interested in starting to play again next summer, but I don't have any idea what courses are good or where I should start. I live in Silver Spring. Somebody help.

  • Hampshire Greens and Northwest Park will probably be your best bets.

University of MD, Hampshire Greens, Needwood, Blue Mash are all good courses within pretty close range.

  • had my last tournament of the year today. the good news is that i set a new personal best with 13 greens in regulation. the bad news is that i had 36 putts. i shot a 79 which is fine, but hitting the ball that well i really should have been several shots better. the greens were double cut and double rolled and everyone had a pretty hard time with them.

  • Anybody using GolfLogix? Took it out on the course today...pretty cool app.

  • Played Rock Harbor today in Winchester. That's one course I can cross of my list because I will never go back. Blind shots galore, no course diagrams whatsoever, ridiculous pin placements on fast, sloping greens, and many gimmicky tricked up holes. The only thing missing was a couple of windmills and a clown's mouth.

congrats tortuga! birdies feel sooo good. i made one of the luckiest birdies of my life today. i had a 210 yard shot on a par 3 with a lot of wind in my face. i tried to take a little something off a 3 wood, and i hit it sufficiently fat to do just that. somehow the ball stopped 5 feet from the hole and i made the putt.

I also learned that being in the fairway is more important than distance. I knew it I guess, but it played out in this round. My short game sucks anyway, who cares if I am 60 yards instead of 120?

depending on how you apply that, i'm not actually sure I agree. here's why:

    Wedge: 100 - 70 70.0%
    7 iron- 9 iron: 98 - 41 41.8%
    <7 iron: 97 - 28 28.9%

since I've been tracking, those are my percentages hitting the green in regulation with certain clubs. as you get closer to the green the odds of hitting the green go up dramatically. my handicap is a legitmate 5.6 and I only hit 6.5 fairways out of 14 per round. i've shot in the 70s this year hitting 7, 6, 7, 7, 8, 5, and 7 fairways. when you're learning to play, learn to hit it hard. worry about straight later.

  • Love hearing someone made their first birdie. I'll always remember mine, on #1 at Falls Road. Great feeling!

Shot 79 at Musket Ridge today, 37 on the back, with 35 putts. Hit 11 greens but just couldn't make any birdies - 12 pars. Sounds a lot like 2more's round. Still need a new driver, but hit it a little better today, and a bunch of good irons. Woodlands tomorrow.

And I agree with the philosophy of letting it rip off the tee. As I used to tell Little Leaguers when I was coaching: Swing hard, in case you hit it.

I'm still swinging hard (for a rookie). I'm talking about using my 4 iron instead of driver or wood. I'm so bad with those clubs, and the distance gain isn't *that* much unless I hit it perfectly. I'm obviously being results oriented because I had a few good holes today, but fairway-green-2 putt (or insanely lucky longass 1 putt wooot) is better than CLUNK-RESCUE(botched half the time)-wedge-2-putt.

But I'm probably wrong. I read an article for beginners that recommended not even carrying a driver until you are consistent with full swings with low irons, then 5 wood, etc.

I mean we're talking about maybe 2 out of 10 fairways with driver, one "perfect" and one worm burner that ends up shorter than my 4 iron, and the other 6 varying degrees of hideous.

I don't think that's such a bad idea, learning without your woods. I think a lot of beginners end up with two different approaches for irons and woods. Sticking to just irons is probably good in that it simplifies what you are trying to learn and keeps you from falling into bad habits. It also keeps you out of driving range mode where you measure your improvement by distance instead of accuracy.

I stopped playing entirely for 7 years until August this year. I was always a big hitter, but I was all over the place. Don't know if it's maturity, but this time around I'm focused (usually) on having a sound and repeatable swing. And in just 2 months I'm putting up better scores than I ever did before. Before I was always in Tin Cup mode, now that I'm getting better scores I'm actually bothering to learn a short game. Think I'm going to break down and get a lesson on chipping and short wedges. But now that I finally have my swing the way I want it, I don't want them to even think about suggesting a change there.

I have the old iPhone 3G, and it did have a lag with reporting distances. But it wasn't terrible. Once it did settle and report the distance, I was surprised just how seemingly accurate it was...within a few yards at most. I really like it as a scorecard. I only scratched the surface with the 24 hour trial period, but it keeps every stat you could want. I was entering my scores at the end of each hole. I think you can also record each shot, which gives you averages for your drives and maybe irons, as well as all the GIR, Fairways %, puts, etc. I just didn't want to get totally distracted by my phone and not enjoy the golfing. I'm not sure I want to buy it in October since it's an annual charge.

  • Played in my final tourney over the weekend and got 3rd in the 36 hole Sr Medal play....don't know how and think they should maybe cancel the whole event cause the scores were in the stratosphere. and no one should get or deserves recognition, other than the winner who shot great scores and lapped the field..Sat I hit the ball very very well (hit holes 2, 7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14,15 and 16 in reg), on 4 par 4's I was in the greenside bunker in 2, and came away with 2 8's and 2 7's..that's14 over par on 4 holes w/o and penalty stroles!!!
