This morning a guy at the coffee shop who plays different courses every weekend said that 2 of his favs are Laurel Valley (by Lorton pen) which he raved about and Bull Run, also in VA..anyone played either of these?

Played Laurel Valley (although I think it's called Laurel Hills) earlier this year. Very good condition but then again that was before 68 90 degree days. Some very tough holes but a very fair course. We played the blues and was fortunate to break 80.

i *almost* think places like that should verify your handicap online when you check in if you want to play from the back tees or maybe even tees i played from.

we almost got in a fight at Druid's Glen outside of Dublin over this issue. i was happy not to play those tees but we had a couple low single digit guys with us and they wouldn't have it. no method to verify a US handicap in ireland 10 yrs ago.

Played Hunter's Oak yesterday. In decent shape, but the course has seen better days IMO. Weird course - extreme links-style layout, hardly any flat lies anywhere, even in the fairways (which are very narrow). Very tough course if you can't hit it straight.

I wonder if they're getting enough business to stay open much longer. I know I wouldn't want to play it more than once a year. That's a difficult business model to sustain, unless you're a destination-resort course.

i have turned down free rounds at that course. it's awful. it's flat but every shot is blind. they took farm land, left the plow ruts and just planted grass. that's one course that i hope becomes a housing development.

  • heading to kiawah in a week. i need new irons. what do you recommend?

info: used to play single digits but now a 19 and only plays about 10x per year (mostly in scrambles). my rounds aren't usually real consistent. i'll play 3-6 holes in even par or under. i'll play 6-9 holes of bogey golf (with a par or 2 thrown in) and i will play 3-6 holes where it looks like i never played the game before. good scramble player but can kill a team as a nassau partner.

the few times i have gotten on kicks where i played a bunch, my game dropped from the low to mid 90s to the mid 80s. i am eligible for the senior tour in 4 yrs. i think that is all the necessary info.

hook me up. what do i buy and where do i buy it?

  • Gonna be hard to get fitted clubs in 10 days ... here's what I'd do:

I play Pings. Nighthawk Golf Center on Rt 3 north of Crofton is having a Ping demo day on Saturday. Josh Gumlia is a top-notch club fitter. Go see him, swing some clubs, pick the ones you like (he'll fit you for Titleist, Mizuno, whatever, but he pushes Ping), get fitted. If you can order them right away they might arrive in time. If not you can shop around Ebay, PlayItAgain sports if you're willing to go with used sticks.

    Kiawah is golf heaven.

  • FYI: Tiger Woodies will be in DC early next week

  • I love the Taylormade Burner irons I bought last Spring. Easily the best irons I have ever owned (had Callaways and then R-7s before). I got them at Duke's in Annapolis.

I thought Dukes was in Eastport, not Nappolis

  • It's right off of Solomon's Island Road, next to Annapolis Harbor Center.

  • Just returned from a West Coast trip. Played in the Nationwide Tour Soboba Classic Pro-Am. Was partnered up with Kyle Stanley. Dude hits it a ton - 320 avg off the tee. He hit a couple 350-360 yds during our round.

Really nice kid, played at Clemson. Talked to a few Golf Channel people there, and they all said he was going to be one of the next kids to break out very soon.

Played a couple of other courses out there as well. Oak Quarry in Riverside is a wild course actually carved out of an old granite quarry. Remarkable layout, would highly recommend it - cheap, too.

Took a ride out past Palm Springs for the 3rd round and hit Indian Wells. Immaculately manicured, beautiful course. Only thing I didnt like was that there were only 2 par 3's and 2 par 5's, I prefer more variety than having 14 par 4's on the course.

  • Golf Etiquette/Legal question:

If you break a window of a house on a golf course, are you legally liable to pay for the damages?

I know the morally right thing to do is take responsibility, but we are arguing the legal aspect of this at work.

    What say you Suque?

  • Most places you are I believe. I know at Belmont CC which has houses everywhere they pointed it out in the literature when we joined.

  • Yes. Just say no to housing-development courses (unless they give you plenty of room for error, like for example Hampshire Greens).

    thesloth

  • Depends on the circumstances, but despite what the courses tell you, it is pretty rare for the golfer to be responsible. I wouldn't consider myself responsible if I hit a house.

    2moreterps

  • If I hit a house on a course, I just pretend like it never happened. Luckily, as I've become a better golfer, it's become much more rare. I've hit houses on Walden a few times and I hit one hard at the Salt Pond in Bethany this year. Years ago, Lake Arbor used to be the worst. You buy a house on a golf course, especially along a fairway or around a green, you deserve whatever happens.

A great place for pizza and beer is the Mellow Mushroom. They only have them in the south, but I've always been a big fan. We eat there every time we go down to Clemson and we at in one outside Montgomery, AL on our golf trip earlier this year.

Actually the golfer is responsible. Your homeowners insurance should cover it but you are responsible. Remember this happened to someone in a tournament I was playing in Scottsdale. Guy did not report. Unfortunately the homeowner was home and called the police. Police were at the clubhouse when this guy finished. Didn't arrest him but required him to give his home owners insurance detail, etc. to the homeowner.

Which course at Indian Wells did you play? I played the Celebrity course back in early June and shot the best round of my life (69, 3 under.) We played a blend of the white and blue tees so compared to the course rating it wasn't as good as it sounds but I was pretty thrilled. Eagled the par 5 on the back.

Played the Celebrity course from the blues (Players course was closed for over-seeding). Was +2 on the front, but fell apart on the back. It was 105 degrees, and the 3rd round in three days.

it depends. it is very very hard to find successful litigation against the actual golfer. most court cases basically say that living on a course has risk.

btw, i don't care what tees you played, shooting a 69 is really impressive. congrats.

  • Here are a couple of shots from Oak Quarry - It reminded me of a Golden Tee course

If anyone is out near LA, it's a must play for the visuals alone (also very cheap if you book online $39 or so)

  • Congrats on the 69. I had a week from the Gods a few summers ago when I went 69 on Sunday at Chaledon and 70 on Wednesday at Argyle (with a double on 18). A week later I was back to 83 but at least I'll have that week forever.

As for the liability I kind of agree that if you buy a home on a course you can't blame the golfer. I mean it's not like we're tryiing to hit it there.

I was very disappointed in ESPN this morning. I recorded and watched the singles Ryder Cup matches last night. It was full of the usual excitement and emotion of the Ryder Cup. ESPN teases the highlights with "if you think golf is stuffy you obviously didn't watch the final round yesterday". Then they proceed to show 5 foot putts and handshakes. The didn't show any of the exciting stuff until the end. If I am a non-golf fan I see that and think "same old golf to me". They had a chance to capture just how unique the Ryder Cup is and they blew it.
