GOLF meta thread

  • I figured I'd start the thread on this board since that is where 50%+ of my posts are anyway.

I played Bulle Rock for the first time today. I played the gold tees which are 74.2 and 142. I shot 83 with two triples so I was actually pretty pleased.

I was amazed at how packed the course was. They had 4 guys teeing on every ten minutes from 7:20 to after 2 PM. I don't really know why most golfers would want to play there. It's so hard that I would think most people would just be frustrated. I certainly wouldn't want to play most of my golf on a course that hard. Thw two guys my friend and I played with were good 80s type players and were clearly very very frustrated by the end. i'm sure they had combined double digit three putts.

As is typical with most Pete Dye courses, there were some pretty stupid quirks. On #17 there was a 5' round patch of grass in a bunker probably 20 yards short of the green. One guy hit it in the bunker, up against the grass. To me, that is really stupid course design. That isn't a place where really really good players hit it. Why would you put an totally arbitrary penalty in a spot where only us regular folk hit it? I'd describe Bulle Rock as PB Dye, with much much more difficult tee shots.

  • Not tough enough for the back tees, eh? j/k (Scorecard says 76.6/148 is that for real?)

I'm not a big fan of Dye, either. But that doesn't mean I'm not dying (npi) to play Bulle Rock. I just can't play it until I've figured out how to hit my driver. I'm taking Congo's advice and going to the long drive clinic at Blue Mash next Thursday - hopefully that will help.

  • I've played Bulle Rock 8-10 times. bogey golfer but haven't broken 90. A lot of the golf is entertainment especially with country club membership down

    FYI DFC is now DGF.

I love Bulle Rock. I also love Dye courses. I'm willing to put up with the tricked up nature of them because the good stuff far outweighs the bogus stuff. Bulle Rock is in my top 3 courses I've ever played. First time there, years ago, we played 2 rounds from the tips. I went 93/83 as the first time around was brutal.

  • I remember playing the tips one year in early spring in wet weather. Holy crap was it playing long. Can't remember what I shot but I hit a lot of woods and long irons into par 4's. I was a scratch around that time and it was one of the tougher rounds I have played.

  • i *almost* think places like that should verify your handicap online when you check in if you want to play from the back tees or maybe even tees i played from.

They do that at Tidewater in MB.

First time I ever saw a place that forbade playing from the back tees was Lighthouse Sound, they only let you play the black tees if you have approval from the pro shop. We were a little pissed when they wouldn't let us - we didn't have time to go in an talk to the pro shop about it cause we were on the tee....at the end of the round we were glad for not playing them.

Lot of friends played an outing at PB Dye on Friday, and they said it was in horrificly awful shape.

  • Its been a few years since I played Bulle Rock. I liked the course a great deal, but don't remember it as being unusually difficult. There was plenty of room off of the tees, no brutual forced carries (other than 18?), and the greens were large enough - those are usually the kind of things that turn a run-of-the-mill 14 handicap publinx golfer into a 100 shooter.

    paterpfan

  • I think those handicap verifications are a great idea, especially for courses as difficult as Lighthouse/Bulle Rock etc.

Every time I've played Bulle Rock the rough was very thick and very long, even right off the green. You miss the putting surface by 5 feet and you have a burred lie and a very difficult chip. 18 is a good example of why it's a good design. With water down the left side it is tempting to bail right, especially when our tees left us around 190 in. But if you do that you have a very scary downhill chip with water if you go long. That's just a good design IMO.

If anyone wanted to get around this, they could just put up fake scores on a free online handicap tracker

make it a verified handicap then. if you know my name, and go to msga.net, you can look me up and see if i'm a cheat or not. if they really go through that effort, oh well. at least it'll solve most of the problems.

pa if you don't remember it being unusually difficult, you just don't remember it that well, or were used to playing very difficult courses.

If you want to get around this play the first hole from the proper tees and then move back to the tips on hole 2. First time I saw the verification was at Royal New Kent and Stonehouse when they first opened (mid 90s.) I think the slope on both courses from the tip was about 150. Several holes with force carries of over 225 (at least one that was 250) so that pretty much keeps anyone other than a low single digit handicapper off the tee. I think you needed to show a handicap of less than 3 to play those tees. As I recall (and this has been awhile) the tees were not marked and they gave you a little map of where they were. As silly as that sounds, they had numerous tees that were isolated and you really would not know where they were without a map.

  • Played the Bay Club yesterday near OC. Not in good shape at all. Not sure the last time they cut the fringe and there was crabgrass around nearly every green. Add in the fact that I played out of the woods on nearly every hole and it was not a great day.

    terpfan83

  • Played Hunter's Oak yesterday. In decent shape, but the course has seen better days IMO. Weird course - extreme links-style layout, hardly any flat lies anywhere, even in the fairways (which are very narrow). Very tough course if you can't hit it straight.

I wonder if they're getting enough business to stay open much longer. I know I wouldn't want to play it more than once a year. That's a difficult business model to sustain, unless you're a destination-resort course.

i had probably my least satisfying round of the year there this year. my group really didn't like the course at all. very easy course to find the woods.

  • Whos played Hollow Creek in Middletown?? I want to get atleast one more nice round in before its to late. Ive always wanted to play there but never have for some reason. Would you recommend it?

    dpatt173redux

  • Hated Hollow Creek. Played a 5 1/2 hour round there one friday morning. Too many people on the course and houses everywhere. Want to play a nice round play Whiskey Creek instead of Hollow Creek.
Agree that Bay Club in OC was absolutely atrocious. Played Man O War at Glen Riddle the same weekend which was unreal.

    mdterp911

  • For some inexplicable reason I played Hollow Creek four times last year. I do not like the course. As stated, it is a housing development course and the houses, while not really in play (unless you do something goofy), are noticeable. I prefer to play golf in a more serene environment.

The course has one thing to recommend it - the 18th hole is an eagle hole if there ever was one. Apparently it was a par-4 when they first opened the course, and people complained it was too tough. It would indeed make a tough par 4 - uphill tee shot and water skirting the left side as you approach the green - but they just decided to call it a par-5 apparently without building any new tees. They just lie about the distance on the scorecard. So it's about a 420 yard par 5. I've had 3 eagle putts on that hole, yet to sink one though.

    thesloth

  • My regular group used to play Hollow Creek, several lived on the course. When they canceled memberships we all moved to MD National. I actually like HC, it is far easier than MD National but since it is short their defense is tough greens. Keep it below the hole at all costs. 9 is a good/tough hole. Hit it 220 or so or you'll go in the hazard.

Someone mentioned Royal New Kent. I absolutely love that course, in my top 3. A true links course if there ever was one. I need to go back as the #2 par 5 has kicked my ass every time.

Agreed on Hunter's Oak. It was very tough and interesting but once a year is plenty. Also agree that they may struggle to stay afloat.

Yeah, I think I used my 5-iron about 9 times and not once did I take a full swing. Constantly chipping out of the woods to get back in play. We played the West course which is actually the nicer of the two. Still in bad shape, though.

Bull Run has gone through ups and downs but in terms of layout, its one of my favorites in northern va. I'd put it right up there with raspberry falls in fact. Previous management had let it go but its actually now owned by the same group that owns raspberry so they're bringing it back. Aside from 18, there really isn't a hole on the course that I don't like.

If you ever want to play it and need someone for your group, just let me know. Its about 20 minutes from me.
