Food trucks

Yeah, I love the rest of the TaKorean ingredients. The Sriracha, cilantro, and toasted sesame seeds are off the hook. I was expecting crispy tofu, but it wasn't terrible. The chicken was a little bland, but I've heard good things about the bulgogi steak. Next time they are around, I'm getting the steak.

the steak blows the other two out of the water

Gurgle, there are trucks in Crystal City almost every day -- District Taco, the Bada Bing, the cupcake truck, etc.

    Has anyone tried Bada Bing?

  • Portland is food cart mecca. It's gotten so goddamn hip to open one it's kind of scary. I think there are more of them than people here.

I called in sick today and am about to go hit my favorite banh mi cart...mmmm...

  • Every time I see a truck delivering massive amounts of Entenman's products to the Commons Shop I think to myself, "I wonder if I could get away with it?".

  • The Lobster Truck is awesome- well worth the $15. I get the Connecticut Roll (lobster meat drizzled in butter). Their claim chowder is the best I've ever had ($7). And their Whoopie Pies are good too.

The Sauca truck is good. I've had the Butter Chicken and the Buffalo Chicken.

Has anyone tried the Dangerously Delicious Pie Truck? Their Crab and Cheddar pie sounds interesting (Fresh lump crab meat with sharp cheddar cheese and of course a healthy sprinkling of Old Bay). Here is a link to their menu: http://dangerouspies.com/Pies.html

  • are food trucks gaining popularity everywhere? In LA, they're the new hip restaurant.

I find the idea of food trucks a little nauseating.

    TheColfax

  • they are. They have been for probably a year or two I guess. I just didn't think it'd have legs and/or transfer to other cities. Seems so ridiculous.

I'm probably just stuck in my ways regarding food service, but it just seems sketchy to me.

Well, I assume that everywhere they're subject to the licensing and other regulatory oversight of any food service enterprise, regardless of whether their stuff is sold from a truck. It just bugs me that they can get away with prices that don't seem much, if any, less than real restaurants that have higher fixed costs and offer a fuller range of services.

    sgii

  • well, you can assume that and I can assume that they can just keep changing their location to evade that kind of stuff.

  • I had a cheesesteak from Bada Bing and it was pretty good. I have not had a spiedie yet.

District Taco is awesome, can't recommend them enough.

    Oregon?

Does anyone know the finer details of starting your own? My friend and I were tossing the idea around but he has heard that you don't make much money.

There were about 400 carts in PDX in 2009, and I'm pretty sure the number has grown substantially. I can't find a number for Austin but I doubt they have half that. Not sure how complete this map is but clearly it doesn't show anything close to 400.

Yep, I know Matt remember (though I haven't been up to Nepo in months since moving across town).

I looked into opening one a little while back and still think about it from time to time. They make it very easy to get the proper licensing here, hence the massive number of carts. Problem is it has become the "rockstar chef" thing to do so it isn't exactly an easy market to break into at this point. There is constant turnover with new carts grabbing up the spots as soon as one fails, very competitive.

Ah OK...did you have another screen name at one time? I remember talking to you though.

Yeah the licensing thing is one of our biggest fears here in MD...I imagine it'd be very expensive just to start up. We want to do it in Annapolis but to be honest I can't remember ever seeing a food truck in town.

    frode

  • I believe that in DC, the licensing/permits needed are not too expensive at all and I think some restaurant owners are kinda peeved about that, but whatever. That might apply to Maryland as well but I don't know. Obviously the biggest costs would be the actual transporting/cooking methods. I also read that food trucks pay a flat $1500 annual fee as opposed to sales tax, which is kind of WTF but thats only DC and probably varies by location. I believe in VA you have to pay sales tax. And I'm sure as the trend grows the regulations will change.

I was really disappointed in District Taco (I went to their store, not their truck, but I can't imagine that matters). It was fine, but it was nowhere near as good as Jessup gas station tacos.

Yeah, I tried the Jessup tacos at the Shell the other day thanks to a previous thread on here. Pretty solid. There's a taco truck that sits on Broadway in Upper Fells (near Gough) a fair amount of the time that is comparable as well.

I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?

Looks like Portland might edge it out.

According the article below, Austin has had 253 new trucks registered in the last 6 months. Their total is just under 400. So in total, Portland wins. Based on the sampling, and the fact that Texans love food, I'd guess Austin wins on quality.

  • I've dined in at Kooper's. Really good burger and sweet potato fries. Not transcendent or anything, but recommended.

I don't see how an oatmeal truck parking outside of big commuter stations could possibly fail.

lol Portland is one of the foodiest towns in america. Also those numbers are meaningless without mention of population.

The food here is unbelievable. I routinely eat higher end stuff at happy hours than I did back east for half the cost. I do miss some of the more prominent preperation methods though, especially for seafood. I'd say the seafood here is on par with the Chesapeake, but the selection is different and it's usually really healthy while I grew up on fried everything. A classier man than I might prefer it out here.

As far as numbers go I was under the impression that Portland didn't lead per capita, it led straight up. I read in some article awhile back that PDX has more carts than NYC, and with a population of about half a mil that's pretty absurd. Not to mention you will not find hot dog carts here like in DC to pump up the numbers. These carts are like friggin' restaurants, which can be good and bad ($$$).

One thing I won't argue PDX can touch Austin in is bbq. This town is seriously lacking and if I ever do end up opening a food cart that's probably the direction I'll go. I'm about to pick up a torch and welder and attempt making a smoker.

Yeah the food truck trend really blew up in '09 and is still growing today. When i moved here in '06 there were a few trucks but now there are everywhere and there are these designated lots that house like 5 of these trucks around town.

I had another name on the scout board but rarely posted. Can't remember if I spoke to you there or at IMS.

I've actually thought about moving back to Baltimore to open one, as the market here is just brutal. You're not gonna blow anyone away with quality here, as there are rock and roll drummers and famous chefs and shit opening high end carts with restaurant prices. The average cart here however would be big time in Bmore. Problem is there is likely a reason they haven't taken off back there on this level (lack of a massive hipster clientelle and rules/regulations to make it harder on you).
