Florida actually does something right

Florida governor defends measure requiring drug tests for welfare - CNN.com

Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Sunday defended recent legislation that requires adults applying for welfare assistance to undergo drug screenings, saying the law provides

  • I dont think it goes far enough. testing should be for everyone receiving benefits of any kind-welfare, food stamps, housing.

If they fail the kids should be taken away from them and placed in good homes until such time as the parent undergoes treatment and demonstates a capacity to raise a child to be independent and successful and provide for him/her in a sufficient manner.

Rewarding people for having kids they cant afford by giving them free housing, free food, and money is idiocracy

I don't believe these welfare programs should exist but I certainly think drug testing for them is outrageous.

Of course you do. I was waiting for your response on this one.

  • If the gov't is going to continue to meddle in our lives I want them to stop removing consequences for terrible personal choices. This is a step in the right direction.

What "good homes" are you talking about?

It isn't like there is a huge demand for brown children among the foster/adoption circles.

    LeafeeWolf

  • Yeah the adoption system is already backlogged, overworked, and underfunded, let's throw a few thousand more kids in there!

  • I'm surprised that nola isn't advocating for mass executions as punishment for failing the tests.

lol, interesting. Arguably, drug addicts need more help than anyone else. And there are plenty of responsible drug users not on these welfare plans. I'm not sure why drug use would be a litmus test for enrollment, but it sure plays well to the masses so they are trying it.

There are plenty of programs to help drug addicts who want to help themselves. If you have the means/money to get drugs, though, don't expect the taxpayer to pay for your food or rent.

It's one thing if you can afford to do drugs while still managing to pay your bills, feed your family, etc. It's a completely different thing when you can't afford to do drugs, and then still proceed to do them while asking for others to pay your way.

Granted, I think there should be some sort of protection going on so that those who are being neglected by these drug users (kids) can receive benefits while still forcing the adults to go to treatment in order to receive welfare.

    Just my opinion though.

  • LMFAO. What kind of person wants peoples kids to be taken away? Are you the grinch or something?

I personally don't like the idea of drug tests. They are too unreliable and too intrusive. Anybody thats ever taken a few drug tests, should know how sensitive they are. I mean, you can fail for eating papi seed bagels and they cant tell the difference. What happens when somebody loses their kids over some shit like that? This sounds like a dumb idea.

  • Any thoughts as to how much a drug test will cost Florida to administer to all recipients? I am not against this, I am just wondering if all consequences have been considered. Will it truly save money or actually cost more in the end? How frequent will the testing be?

LOL I was listening to Pun on the way home. Hahaha.

CCterp has a point. Plus drug tests are expensive, and inaccurate. This is in all liklihood just another waste of money and another case of rich people fucking with poor people. Im all for social services getting tipped off if an irresponsible parent is smoking crack instead of feeding a child. But this will almost certainly end up with people smoking weed taking the brunt of the punishment, and its not even that serious for real. Consider this...when people mention drug tests, its people that smoke herb that have the most to worry about. Its the drug they test for primarily because it stays in your system the longest. Alcoholics, coc users, heroine users...they can all skirt this type of stuff unless they are test regularly.

Horrible Horrible idea, and I'll go as far as to say that anybody that believes in this type of shit needs to leave Maryland immediately.

What do you think will impose a greater burden on taxpayers- welfare recipients using drugs or the (inevitably inefficient and wasteful) government bureaucracy that will have to be established to administer the drug tests?

This, unless all of you are willing to step up and foster one of the thousands of low income orphans that taking children from drug using parents would create in the "hypothetical" law some of you are supporting. I'd be all for the idea if the people who are devising these "improvements" in America's social workings are going to care about the mess they would make.

Lol I sometimes work in an office where parents who's children and taken from them are court ordered for treatment and counseling. About 90% of those individuals should NEVER have children in their homes again. Kinship or foster care would be much better for them and that's pretty sad.

You forgot to factor the increased law enforcement. A junkie is going to try to find a way to both do drugs and have enough money to eat.
