Dulles Airport

  • The local order is easily DCA, BWI, IAD in terms of easiness. Not even close to debatable.

Worst for me is ATL. I also hate Orlando and Tampa, because old people can't follow directions.

how much of that is bc of weather though ? my experience has been that the ORD to EWR flights are generally on time, with the exception of when you get some crazy midwestern storm out of the blue that delays things for a bit

the thing that sucks about ORD is getting to / from the airport to downtown. thats a 45min - hour cab ride at almost any point of the day

Do you remember how much of a CF that EWR was during the construction I think 10 years ago? I still don't understand why 1,9, and the Turnpike all meet right there.

I'm just bad luck w/ the weather through there. That, and UAL not having the planes or crews because of weather elsewhere. Never had to use it as a destination, just as a connection. I try to avoid it except for red eyes (no problems w/ 6 AM flights!), but sometimes it's unavoidable. At least I get the benefits from being 1K once I finally get on the plane. Also, any airport w/o free wifi also pisses me off in this day & age. Fortunately, I can use my phone as a mobile hotspot, but wifi should be free at all airports.

  • on a scale of one to ten, how douchey is it to talk strictly in airport codes on this thread? i can understand using the local dc codes but lets tone the douche factor down and use some city names gentlemen.

these are the same guys who give presentations and assume that everyone walks in the door knowing all their stupid acronyms and internal buzzwords.

very douchey. I'm a big commercial aviation fan so I know all the codes but most don't know.

as for Dulles, it sucks pretty bad. lines are long for everything. I only use it for international purposes. BWI handles the same amount of passengers every year and is much more efficient.

  • Does Dulles still have those funky buses that took you from the main terminal to the remote terminal? I don't think I ever caught a flight without having to get on that shuttle.

Dallas Fort-Worth sucks. A bunch of semicircle terminals with a rickety train system. If your connection isn't in the same terminal, you have to wait in line and go through the security check point as if you just arrived to the airport.

I didn't mind Atlanta cuz it was easy to navigate. But, it's a nightmare if your connection was at least 2 or 3 terminals away.

  • DCA is of course the best option.

BWI has the best parking options by far (Fastpark, Econo, etc).

IAD has more flights, which I guess is the only advantage. The new TSA setup has become so much slower (the centralized basement thing they have going on) and I think the retard buses were faster than the train is now. Of course they still have some of those buses for the far terminals, had to get on one to get over for an international flight. It took 15 minutes on that damn POS bus, waiting for planes to taxi so the bus could cut across.

  • Yes, Dulles does suck. But so do pretty much all US airports - other than some of the small city airports, which are better just thru lack of use.

But yeah, compared to places overseas like Chiangi (Singapore - #1 in my opinion), Incheon, Narita, HKG, Dubai, etc.

But then again some of the worst are overseas too - Heathrow, CDG-Paris & Frankfurt all are terrible...

A lot of the big European airports make ours look perfect. Pretty much the definition of Charlie Foxtrot.

  • I fly out of Dulles and LAX with no issues. Shrug.

To me the worse is Atlanta, and the worse airline to take there is Delta!

  • Complaining about air travel is the equivalent of a comedian talking about his wife. So hack. The more seasoned travels complain less because they realize there will be delays, cancellations and lost bags from time to time. I get really annoyed at people waiting at the gate rolling their eyes, exasperated that they are boarding 10 minutes late. I could try to explain that the time will probably be made up in the air but I usually just ignore them.

You take that back on Frankfurt...I love my beer selection and free pretzels in the Lufthansa lounge :)

If we are talking international...the only other airport I can say is even close with Chainggi is the Kuala Lumpur airport...others I like Hong Kong, Munich and Montreal

Airports I hate overseas...Moscow, Jakarta, Narita, Manila, (any place in Central America, especially San Salvador)..

As an airport, I've never had any issues with Atlanta.. although the overall clusterfuck of that city is enough to be bothered by using it.

I prefer Dulles just because I'm so much closer to it. When I have to fly out of BWI, it hurts my soul to have to drive right past Dulles.

    HEY you suck

I get similarly annoyed at people who honestly believe there's a difference between the major US carriers because Delta/United/US Airways lost their bag once.

    tecmoHOOperbowl

  • Yeah, I don't get the Atlanta hate either. I think that airport design does a pretty fantastic job of getting a ridiculous volume of traffic through with pretty minimal non-weather delays.

    tecmoHOOperbowl

  • Of course this is just based on the one time I've been there, but I have a special disliking for the Detroit airport. The layout is basically a mile long, and I had to cover about 80% of it in about 15 minutes to make my connection.

Hooray for booking through priceline to save a few bucks but having to switch airlines.

KC's airport is unique that you can practically get dropped off/picked up in front of your gate.
