5 people walked out of the theater, everyone I was with hated it. It is really unrealistic and stupid.

    92% on rotten tomatoes

not that I give a damn about that, all that matters is that I love it, but that's certainly a more compelling argument for its merits than your friends and a few dumb people are against it

and the "unrealistic" comment is hilarious. the movie was not in any way, shape or form meant to be the slightest bit realistic

  • I'll give people some time to see it before I rant, but my favorite parts were the 45 minutes worth of slow motion montages that didn't advance any semblance of a story and featured the cheesiest music imaginable (that I'm sure you loved).

  • I thought the soundtrack was fantastic, yes.

I see where you're coming from. I just don't agree. My date tonight thought it was going to be like the transporter and didn't want to see it. she ended up loving it. funny enough, as we were walking out, some teenager said the same thing wrt the transporter and thought it was terrible

and the montages were more about spectacle and direction than plot

I can see why one would dislike that

I think I went into it thinking it would be some sort of American Layer Cake with more action, which probably ruined it for me

  • I saw it last night and thought it was OK but nothing I would recommend. After the opening chase there was a long period where I was making myself try to like it. Way to many awkward silences, almost as if the main characters were communicating through facial expressions as opposed to dialog. I can hardly believe it got a 92 on Rotten Tomatoes. I'd give it a 40 for some decent chase scenes and a uniquely hot Cary Mulligan.

    Oh, the soundtrack sucked.

Dude, I totally agree with you.

It just felt so contrived/unrealistic to me. I really digged the montages/soundtrack, but something was just seriously off here.

This is coming from someone who normally only watches movies based off of RottenTomatoes scores.

So I just saw this last night and this morning I'm trying to figure out wtf I just watched.

I dug the 80's feel for the movie. At one point I actually thought to myself "is this set in the 80s?" but remembered the new Impala at the beginning of the movie. I thought the soundtrack was real good, but I'm a sucker for 80's type synth

What I did not like was the awkward breaks in dialogue and the overly cheesy gore. I think the movie could have stood on it's own without showing Hendricks' head explode in slow mo, Gossling stomping on someone's head 36038936 times, etc.... Also didn't think there was enough actual driving.

I still can't make a final determination on whether I liked it or not.

I saw it last weekend and felt the same way. I kind of liked the 1980s Michael Mann feel, but the extended scenes of Gosling silently smirking didn't quite work. And given the performance of the LAPD, that's the place to be a criminal. Don't get the RT rating at all, but maybe 2.5 stars?

  • Finally watched it on Bluray. It's my favorite movie of 2011.

  • Just saw it,. Not sure how I missed this the first time around.

    Awesome flick.

JManslow is shitting on his own leg in this thread. The movie was great but ok I guess it is possible not to like it if it wasn't your thing but don't you DARE hate on this soundtrack. Face melting IMO.

This would probably be my favorite track. Had never heard it previous to the movie.

  • I rarely enjoy being "that guy", but if you didn't like this movie, you simply don't appreciate that film can be art and you just look at it as entertainment/diversion. Its akin to complaining the The Wire is boring or confusing compared to Entourage or saying you didn't like the food on your trip to Italy as much as the Olive Garden. Great flick

That's why it is so weird to me. Rottentomatoes/reviews always seem to nail how I'll feel about a movie, show, or album. I could not stand this movie and I refuse to watch it again. I didn't read a review going into it, I just knew its score and anticipated greatness, which it was not. Some of my friends who loved it as much as you guys and are incredulous that I hated it seem to argue "Well yeah, there isn't much dialog and the dialog that exists is clunky, and sure some parts of the plot didn't make sense, but that's what makes it so awesome!" Which seems like they're saying if something is intentionally shitty, then it isn't shitty, which is fucking dumb.

  • I thought the whole thing was that he tries to help the girl and her kid and does the right thing but that also he is a complete psycho underneath. Every time there was a break in dialogue with him smirking I figured we were just supposed to think he was inside his own head. Not sure if that is supposed to be how you take him but that was where I was at.

I viewed the dearth of dialogue as a plus. Too many screenwriters think that they can force a movie into being memorable by making the characters talk, and talk, and talk, on and on. This movie tells its tale through other means.

Maybe it's a married guy thing - who hasn't had the idle thought in the middle of a conversation with their spouse, "Okay, I understand what you're telling me, now STOP TALKING."

  • FWIW, why are people saying "unrealistic" like it's a bad thing? Isn't that why movies exist? Spending a couple of hours removing you from reality? I want all of my movies to be like Garden State!

This was my take on his character and you see this in display at the diner when that guys speak to him about another job. Also, good call on the Nightcall track; I got that track immediately after watching that movie.

Also, the scarcity of dialogue worked extremely well b/c the acting was top notch and added to the intensity.

  • Awesome movie. I really fail to see the negative reviews. Sure it was kind of slow after the opening credits, but once the story official begins with Standard's introduction, it never lets down. Loved the elevator scene too.
