Directv

  • After realizing how much Comcast dicks you over for cable, I'm thinking of switching to Directv. Anyone here have it? Is there a downside to it, other than being locked into the two year deal? Can you transfer service when you move? And can you get Comcast for just internet? (Apt. complex is only wired for Comcast).

    ptownterp

  • The downside is that you will have weather related outages.

    Tabe

  • I've had it for about four years, and the only times I've lost signal for more than a few hours are when the dish was covered in snow. Regular rain does nothing to the signal. And yes, its awesome, especially if you don't live in the local market of your teams.

    PredaTerp

  • Have had it for 6 years or so. Other than the very occasional weather outage, I couldn't be happier with it.

    fearthenoodle

  • Yes to all your questions. I had it the entire time I was in South Dakota and loved it.

Only reason I don't have it now is because it is cheaper to bundle my internet and TV with at&t.

Don't YOU save $100 as the person who referred them? I thought that's how it worked anyway...

DirecTV is the best service around, IIRC it may a be a tad more expensive than Comcast but as somebody who has had both, Directv is the better product. Comcast outages lasted forever, my directv goes out occasionally during heavy storms but it's only out for maybe 5 mins and then its all good again...

Edit: They also aren't idiots when something is wrong and you need to call them (Dealing with Comcast was always a nightmare).

  • you will lose HD signal during massive t-storms until they are over but just switch to SD and and you can still watch whatever you are watching.

If you are getting multiple HD DVR's invest in the protection plan...everything is covered including the equipment...last thing you want to do is pay $200-400 for a new box which you will. Best $7 a month I can spend since when installed you get new equipment but once you go into the replacements they are refurbished. In 4 years I have got 3 replacements.

  • I'm not real happy with DirecTV at the moment, but we'll see if a call to retention fixes that.

Almost every time I have called and complained about something DirecTv has come through with some hook up. Free HBO/showtime etc, free sports package, and when I cancelled NFL ticket last year because of price they called back a day or two later and gave it to me for 1/2 off. They seem tight on the replacement boxes even with the protection plan though and have given me a hard time about changing up one of mine because it is so slow. And mine only goes out randomly for a few minutes usually with light rain or occasional drizzle and worked just fine through Snowpacolypse and hurricane type storms. Comcast is the worst, I gladly take any issues I have with DirecTv over those scumbags.

  • I've had Directv for ~3 years and I think its gone out due to weather maybe 5 times

    lazy

  • I will add another +1 for DTv.

Been a customer since ~2000. Only issue is occasional loss of signal during very heavy T-storms. But always comes right back as soon as the worst of the storm has passed...

I don't pay for the protection plan and have had 2 boxes crap out. All they required me to pay was the shipping (~$20).

  • If you're going to sign up, do so through AAA. They give you $200 off your bill ($10/mo for 20 months) and you can compound a recommendation from someone at $10/mo off for 10 months. Plus, they're running a promotion for free NFL Sunday Ticket for one year. That way, even if you need to quit from your two-year agreement, their base package is $30/mo so with the discounts you're not out a ton of money if you go another direction.

I just switched recently from Comcast and I enjoy it a lot more...mainly because I get Root Sports Pittsburgh in HD instead of SD through Comcast. Also, the DVR is massive compared to Comcast's.

The only bummer is that the OnDemand is through the internet, so you have to download any show you want to watch rather than just watching it instantly through Comcast. Overall, I get more of the channels I want at a lower price, and despite it cutting out 4-5 times briefly during storms last month it is still worth it to me.

  • I too hate comcast and decided to move to DirectTV. Got everything all set up for installation and took the day off of work for them to come out and install, was really pumped. Installation guy gets out of the truck and immediately says "it's not going to work, to many trees in the way." What a buzzkill. He called his dispatcher and I talked to them and they said they'd send someone out to confirm. I don't think they ever did, and I never received a call back or anything. I called and they said they'd cancel my order. Now I'm just waiting for the first bill to show up and that'll be a huge PIA, I'm sure of it.

Now I just have to wait it out for FIOS (still not in my area) while Comcast keeps bending me over with no reach around. As for the internet, Comcast will charge you like $30 extra a month if you only get their internet. There are other options out there though like wifi cards.

This is a good point. Usually they'll give in if you talk to them long enough.

  • I don't know what the deal is - but I've never had an issue with Comcast. I threaten to leave once a year and they always knock $30-$50 off my bill immediately. I pay $130 right now (including taxes) for one TV, one HD box, DVR, OnDemand, router, high-speed internet etc. Only get HBO and the sports package, though - no Showtime or other movie channels. I have the occasional outage four or five times a year, but it's almost always resolved quickly (within a hour or two). Given my lack of issues, am I still being ripped off? Would I still benefit from DirecTV?

I didn't have to talk to them long. They went through the standard power cycle the unit, reset it,...

When all that failed they said they'd send me a replacement and I'd only be required to pay shipping. The protection plan is a joke, IMO.

Only reason I'd get it is if you have your dish mounted on your roof and you plan on getting the roof replaced. Sign up for the replacement plan, roofers take dish down, call DirecTV saying your signal is lost, technician comes and remounts it.

If you tell them on the phone that you are getting the roof replaced then that isn't covered, so just say your signal isn't working ... that's what my technician told me to do.
