Just for reference, a safety from my school (190 or so pounds at the time) squatted 600, cleaned 370, ran a 4.48 forty and benched well over 385. I have no idea what he could run a 5k in but im sure he'd be just fine.

Thats pretty sick. No idea why he wouldn't sign up for the CF games and crush it, then. First place is $250k.

  • I was squatting 600 in high school for reference...I can do probably do 455 right now and I dont even remember the last time i squatted.

  • while i'm sure this thing produces more than its fair share of douchebags, if it's what some people need to motivate them, then great. whatever floats your boat. despite the proliferation of assholes it's probably still a net positive.

Phatboy if you had any balls I'd meet you at the AFA Boxing gym and have Coach Weichers put some gloves on us.

    He plays for the Colts.

I don't disagree with this. Anything that gets people in shape is a good thing. Don't talk down to me though.

This plus leave me alone. I don't care about your awesomeness.

  • Pretty sure there are plenty of college athletes from any big D1 school that could do those lifts and are not headed to the NFL.

    High Noon

  • My best numbers from college at 6'4 220: 365 bench, 315 incline, 475 squat, 310 clean, 295 jerk, 230 snatch, 4.68 forty.

I'm a good athlete but not exactly a freak compared to some of my teammates either.

  • I agree the talking down is dumb and I don't like the cultish personality.

Again, I'm not sure why some of these former D1 FB players that aren't going pro aren't competing. 250k is a nice chunk of change...

are you still lifting a lot? just curious why you dont squat? do you deadlift?

    AlphaOmega

  • The hyphen in the thread title annoys the shit out of me

    TortugaGrande

  • i do deadlifts, but never more than 225 or 275 or so. Well actualy thats a lie I was doin 405 last year. I just dont need to do it. Also I have bad knees or at least I think I do. I also do some crossfit stuff the whole lift and jerk and then raise above your head workout. Squatting is just not cool for me.

    Mr Tiffles7673

  • There is no reason to be able to squat 600 pounds or huge #s for other lifts unless you are using it to be athletic. Otherwise, getting lean muscle mass is the way to go.

Yeah and according to his bio he was also a college athlete and has only been doing crossfit 1-2 years. I think the guy who won the previous year was a former professional soccer player from Europe who had also only done crossfit for a year or two.

I'd be a lot more impressed by crossfit as a S&C methodology if the crossfit games were dominated by people who had actually trained using crossfit for a significant amount of time. Can you imagine any other sport (which is what CF is trying to be) where the national champions had only been involved in the sport for a couple of years? Shouldn't the guys who have been doing crossfit for 8+ years be dominating the events?

Not exactly sure where the guy above you got the stats on last year's winner, Rich Froning. According to his profile for this year's games, he is 5'10, 195 and has a 325 C&J, 270 snatch, DLs 525, backsquats 425, and can do 70 consecutive pullups. Obviously, these stats won't really impress competitive olympic lifters, but in crossfit he is combining these movements with other skill and cardio movements which make them harder to perform. Obviously, the whole point of crossfit is to combine these things, so if you start off with the assumption that doing olympic lifts for time is dumb, then yeah, crossfit in general will probably seem pretty dumb to you.

Smiley, I think you are underestimating how new this "sport" is. The Games only started in 2007, and its recent explosion in popularity has only really been in the last few years. So there really aren't alot of people who have been doing this hardcore for 5+ years, although some have, and still do well in the Games. It would kind of be like concluding Poker is mostly luck because a string of amateurs/internet players starting winning the WSOP once that craze started.

I do agree with alot of the douchiness/injury concerns raised in the thread.

  • Let's get one thing clear. It is NOT a sport.

  • Bump.

Workout on Monday was the following. Very hard to hurt yourself doing this. Would love to see the times some of the bad asses here can post:

    “Murph”
    For time:
    1 Mile Run
    100 Pullups
    200 Pushups
    300 Squats
    1 Mile Run
*Partition the pullups, pushups, and squats any way you like
    *Rx’d is wearing a 20lb weight vest

    Joesmith32

  • Why don't you share your times?

    WMTerp12

  • its pretty easy to get hurt doing pullups and weighted squats

    miniterp8982

  • no chance i can do 100 pullups. the rest i could do, very slowly and painfully, but could do.

    terp2007

  • Some dude on Sunday was talking/bragging about how he was doing this and paying $350 a month for unlimited classes and 24 hour access to the gym but wasn't even going to most of the classes because he knew the workouts and did it himself....like WTF is wrong with you. Especially when you still looked scrawny. Just pay a basic gym membership fee and do the tiffles plan

54 mins for me, no vest.

    I suck balls though.

    Joesmith32

  • It would take me forever to do the pullups (I'm around 215 and can really only do at most 10 at a time), but I could run two 7 minute miles, knock out the pushups in at most 5 minutes, the squats in maybe 10? Not sure how long that'd take. With transitioning and brief resting I'd probably say I could do that in 45 minutes.

I'll give this a go next week and time myself.

    That would be impressive.

Regardless, its a great workout that doesn't come with the injury risks of a lot of the CF workouts...

If those are kipping pullups, then it would be retardedly easy to hurt yourself while doing them. Especially if you weigh over ~190 lb.

I am not a workout badass, so don't take this as any kind of personal challenge, but your post pretty much illustrates the problem that most non-crossfitters have with crossfit, especially as a S&C methodology. Any idiot can come up with workouts that are "badass" and will completely smoke the participants, but for a S&C program to be successful its goals should be to keep likelihood of injury low and to improve performance in the sport.

And that's pretty much what I'm getting at with the CF Games winners not actually having built their S&C through crossfit-- overall crossfit really seems much more of a way for people who are already in fantastic shape to test their fitness than it is a way for people to improve their S&C.
