So my office signed up to volunteer at the soup kitchen in Baltimore today. Pretty humbling experience, except for the part where some people coming in to eat were on their iPhones the whole time.
WTF is that about?
I know, I hate it when my office or other such organization signs up for these things and then guilts you in to either donating time or money to a cause I really don't give a shit about. For the United Way drive this year, they made it a point to say that you weren't required to give and that it wouldn't be held against you and then in the first all staff meeting after the drive was completed, they called the name of everyone who donated and had them stand up, so pretty soon everyone could tell who the non-donors were. Pretty shitty if you ask me. I'm no idiot though, i donated a dollar a pay period. I give to a few charities on my own, I don't need to be guilted in to being a good citizen.
It was lame. I'm not going back.
They assigned the women that showed up things like "refill water" and "serve bread".
I got empty the trash cans and scrape the plates.
Those trash cans aren't going to empty themselves, you know.
Emptying the trash? Eww. Hope you didn't break a nail!
How dare they not give you one of the many glamorous soup kitchen jobs?!
I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?
Oh I'm totally being a diva about it I know.
I just wasn't expecting to spend 4 hours wading through half eaten food and then smelling like a dumpster all afternoon at work.
Why do they have trash cans? Scoop any leftover food out of those things and serve it to the next people in line. A soup kitchen should have zero food waste.
There was a TON of food thrown away today.
Gotta save something for the freegans.
Shitty meatloaf is shitty meatloaf
