No way I spent more than $200 on prom.
Also telling that the most is spent by single parents (almost double what married parents spend), and by those that make less than $30k a yr.
Where TF is all the expense coming from??
The cost of prom night rose 5% this year to an average $1,139 per attendee—a staggering sum that should spark frank spending discussions in every household with a teenager. Only three years ago, the recession was fresh and families were vowing to tighten their belts for good.
The only thing I can think of is the dress and the limo.
Ticket prices are fixed, dinner prices can't get too crazy, tux prices are pretty set unless you want to get crazy.
That leaves girls getting ridiculous dresses and people getting ridiculous limos driving up the average for everyone else.
Yeah, I'd be interested to see the difference in cost between boys and girls. Obviously, prom dresses can get really expensive, and I'm sure a lot of the girls get their hair and make-up done at expensive places.
But, for boys:
tux rental -- 50-100?
corsage -- 25-50
dinner -- with no alcohol, the most it could cost would be probably $50 a person in Middle Amurrca
Any idea what limo rental costs? It can't be that ridiculous, esp if you're splitting the cost with 1 or 2 other couples.
Where's the rest of it?? Too many folks watching 'My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding' and blinging accordingly?
[NYCTerp} This is why segregated proms are a good idea "culturally." [/NYCTerp]
It depends, does my alcohol and condom budget count in this?
The guy who wore the kilt to prom NEVER gets laid.
0 chance that is a scientific survey. Hell it was done by visa and most high school kids aren't old enough to have a credit card. I paid for my tux and dinner with cash.
based on my high school (and what I saw when I came home from my freshman year of college), there was a lot more spent on the former than the latter.

"roomers are for bitches and bitches get fucked up."
Well, it's done based on their parents' expenditure.
Yeah, that guy didn't, but I did! The kilt only showed up when i was married and didn't need to give a fuck about how I looked anymore.
My sister sells dresses for 300-1500 a piece. During prom season she sells 3-5 per day. Chicks (Chick's parents) are crazy. They think princess diaries, cinderella, and titanic moments are supposed to happen in everyone's life.
These folks definitely skewed the numbers...
Did I miss anything by not going to prom and hs graduation?
Wow. This is NOT roomy!
a lot of people go away for weekend post prob, my trashy jersey ass went down the shore. maybe they count stuff like that?
I wouldn't think so, just like I wouldn't think that they'd count the costs incurred by the 2 or 3 sets of parents that throw the inevitable humongous post-prom parties
I totally misread the subject title.
No chance those outfits cost more than $200 combined.
can't get anything past you
Makes me happy that I didn't go to prom. I'm not going to work my ass off at a shitty retail job for months just for like 1 night of fun. I would rather blow that in a night out at a club.
My daughter's prom was last year and the stuff adds up in a hurry--hair, dress, share of limo, etc. Then again, the entire senior year is basically spending money all the time.

Our prom was easily like $1k, but it was at the Waldorf-Astoria. I didn't go however, and spent my money on a 10 day trip to Ireland. Much better than spending a night with these people

Did people really not go to their senior prom?! WTF? I get not going to junior prom or something but senior prom was the shit (minus the fact my gf at the time was sick.)
She was probably sucking off some other dude. I'm surprised you didn't just whip it out since girls can't resist a big penis.
OT's perpetual honesty is like a sword in the heart of my interweb cynicism.
I did not go to my prom.
A girl I was friends with asked me to go to Senior Homecoming with her but I said no because I wasn't attracted to her at all and my anxiety made the idea of it mildly terrifying. In hindsight I should have said yes because I would have gotten a bj out of it at the absolute minimum.
TLDR: I was a fucking loser in high school and anxiety sucks.
