Big Racism needs to do a better job of framing their message
I have nothing against the Catholic church or the pope. I was a big John Paul II fan for his attempted reforms, though I think he has a black eye on his record for the sex abuse allegations during his reign. However, I have had issues with Ratzinger, not the church, not the role of pontiff, for a long time - way before he became the Pope. He has opposed almost every reform the church has done for the last 30 years.
Benedict is one of the best mass-celebrators and sermon-givers in the business, but he stopped recruiting new pope prospects for the last couple of years.
You can't just send your cardinals out to do it and expect sustained success in the future.
Plus his frayed relationship with local Italian powerbrokers was sending some of his best prospects to Protestant squads.
"And I try to har-mo-nize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings...
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden."
All he has to do is avoid giving sermons in soccer stadiums.
there aren't enough excommunications or exorcisms these days. which pope candidate will promise those?
Maybe he wants to spend more time with his family.
I hear it's a gambling thing and they're trying to cover it up.
Pope Benedict saw how much harm was done to the Catholic Church when the priest sexual misconduct broke when a prior Pontiff was too ill to respond to it. He is getting out prior to reaching a period of failing health which could distort his thinking and prevent history from repeating itself.
Selfless act imo!

So he will be back in 3 years to win 3 more rings?
Sign from God? Lightning strikes St. Peters.
In a decision that has surprised even his closest aides, the 85-year-old Pontiff said his strength was .
when did kunal become reeceg
Phatboy if you had any balls I'd meet you at the AFA Boxing gym and have Coach Weichers put some gloves on us.
I'm pretty sure that is a well-deserved insult, but I might need someone to :leftyterp me on exactly why I'm being a :reeceg ... what does reeceg do? I often tune him out.

I think this is a misunderstanding. He isn't resigning, he's re-signing. He wanted to negotiate some of the bonuses and extend his contract.
I just embarrassed myself with this post
The Daily Show was great in first part tonight....
First part had the pope retiring because of Manti Teo.....talking to someone at night who he is never met (and a lot more clip will be up in morning).
Smiley call-out thread already producing quality results
"It's just so hard," Greivis said. "It's my heart, my love. Maryland made me who I am."
The "Habemus papam" announcement is my favorite thing about selecting a new pope.
Wow. This is NOT roomy!
Last nights Daily Show
The Africans aren't serious candidates.
They're just getting interviews to comply with the Rooney Rule.
Do you think the @Pontifex handle stays with Benedict or gets passed down? If it gets passed down, as I'd assume it will, do you think they change the password so Benedict can't get on and post racist, drunk, and/or senile Tweets from now on?
So you're saying this guy is the leading candidate???
lol, was parousing the net earlier and noticed that a few African-borns have been elected Pope before, but they were all around/before 500 A.D.
Clearly life spans were different then but one guy in the 1500s got elected at 37. 37!
Also if you were born in Italy your chances of being Pope go up by 400%.
