In 20 years you're going to be pretending you always supported gay marriage, just like the conservatives do now with interracial marriage.
In that case, as a fiscal conservative, I ask that you please stop self-identifying as a conservative and stop helping ruin both the conservative political establishment and the country as a whole.
When the country is facing a calamitous financial future and there is a desperate need for some fiscal conservatism, the last thing the country needs is for conservatives to be associated with rallying around depriving people of equal rights. The last thing the conservative movement needs to rally around for the next 40 days, let alone the next 40 years, is the issue of gay rights.
The conservative candidate has lost the popular vote in 5 of the last 6 Presidential elections. I'm pretty sure most conservatives don't want to see that happen in 5 of the next 6 Presidential elections as well.
you know he's a known racist troll, right?
I think that NYCTerp would consider me a social liberal and he's right. But I must admit I like the idea of some type of pay what you weigh airline seat pricing that was done in a gender equivalent capacity.
There were conservative candidates?
Mitt Romney was "severely conservative." That's like, twice as good as your normal conservative.
"And I try to har-mo-nize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings...
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden."
Or whether or not women can get abortions!
Or before, whether or not a black man and a white woman could get married!
Socially conservative issues are the absolute worst.
yeah ok, sure. keep telling yourself that
NYCTerp is now OCTerp
yup, just like we pretend to have always supported the destruction of innocent human life
I'm like 220 pounds and in no way should I be paying more then some of the fat assholes that I fly with sometimes.
You chose to lift brah.
The guy that instituted MassCare, conservative? I think not. He might have resembled Ward Cleaver, but he wasn't all that conservative.
edit - oops, sorry DOY, the joke went right over my head - I need another cup of coffee!

It's all relative ... compared to Obama, Romney was obviously conservative. And if even marginally conservative candidates can't win, I'm not sure why some Republicans keep trying to convince themselves that truly conservative social candidates would give them a better shot. Someone like Rick Santorum would have lost by a 4-1 electoral college margin. Th only thing the social conservatives are doing is killing the party with young voters and drowning out the fiscal conservatives ... the last thing the GOP needs right now.

romney got fewer votes than john mccain. conservatives didn't rally around him. not saying santorum would have definitely beat obama, but the bench was weak for us last year, and i think a real conservative would have given us a better shot of winning. obama doesn't play to middle nor hide that he's liberal, and won twice. why? because his anti-american liberal base rallied around him. and those are the people who volunteer, make calls, knock on doors and show up to the polls. john kerry, michael dukakis, al gore, etc couldn't muster the same enthusiasm.
how many modern conservatives were of voting age back when interracial marriage was even an issue? hell, how many were born?
Phatboy if you had any balls I'd meet you at the AFA Boxing gym and have Coach Weichers put some gloves on us.
This article gets into the same question I asked about Huckabee's claim.
Most of them?
I remember when this thread was fun. RIP fun part of this thread
Quit mixing social cons with fiscal cons, kunal. The liberals here are stupid and will go on multi-post rants about how conservatives hate everyone different and want guns to shoot children.
None of us wants liberals posting more folderol.
Yeah, this thread used to be the fun part of a train wreck and now its the part where you have to actually sift through the disgusting bits of what used to be people.
Sure hope you aren't saying that, as that claim would be pure delusion.
Santorum would have gotten electorally obliterated.
You got that wrong, and by a fair piece. Romney was a fiscal conservative, but his conservative views ended pretty much there. There is a reason Romney failed for years to gain the support of the social conservatives in the Pub core vote and win the Primaries, that was because his views were to the left of theirs. In 2012 social conservatives forgave Romney's past positions on social issues simply because Obama was viewed as far worse.
He was the opposite of the W form of conservative. W was a social conservative and a fiscal spendthrift. Romeny was a moderate on social issues and a fiscal conservative.
Romney had a moderate position on many social issues, but was a hard core conservative on fiscal matters. The analysis in the link shows Obama and Romney doing worse then did Obama and McCain as far as total votes.
My guess is the almost 9 million votes Obama lost did not go to Romney, they probably didn't vote at all. Romney got 2 million fewer votes then did McCain, imo a far worse candidate.
I will always believe the Romney campaign had a horrible message, and the Obama campaign was again run efectively and with a remarkable ground organization. The Obama campaign owning the press also helped more then many woulf like to believe. Yes the media still has relevence.
Did Social Conservatives cost Mitt Romney the election? This is the topic du jour for Conservatives and for Liberals pushing the narrative that the GOP stands for and, as such, is the party of Hate. Here are the final vote counts for 2008 and 2012: 2008 Obama: 69,456,897 McCain: 59,934,814 2012 Obama: 60,602,103 Romney: 57,776,942 Difference Obama: -8,854,794 (12.75% Decrease) Romney: -2,157,787 (3.61% Decrease) Voting was down across the board for both parties however it was the [...]
No doubt about that....
