New York mayors lifetime giving to Hopkins will pass $1 billion, possibly a record sum in higher education.
"Anyone who talks about Jordan Williams leaving knows nothing about basketball. Absolutely nothing" - Hogie 02/27/2011
He's worth about ~$25 billion and has pledged to give most of his net worth to charity. He's been a good alum to JHU
Hopefully he gives some money to anti-smoking groups or groups that promote healthy living and eating rather than using state power to impose his views on others.
Getting a school named after you isn't cheap.

THERE SHOULD TOTALLY BE SOME SORT OF VOTE THING TO REMOVE DICTATORS LIKE HIM FROM STAYING IN OFFICE
Yeah it'd be nice if there were term limits that could prevent someone from serving three terms.
Too bad Sergey's not like this.
I got the shotgun. You got the briefcase. It's all in the game though, right?
I was debating this with a friend the other day, and there is no way we'd find the answer, but I actually think if he ran for a fourth term he'd win again
I wonder if he likes public television.
Surprised there isn't a "Michael Bluth gives away $15k to Tight-Ass Country Club" parody thread.
We don't want no part of that parody thread, ya freak bitch.
"And I try to har-mo-nize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings...
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden."
Ridiculous comment. You are comparing the philanthropy of 39 year old with a ~72 year old man. People here need to quit acting like Brin and Plank (40) should be throwing money towards the University of Maryland in the prime of their working careers so we can have better football & basketball facilities. Both Brin & Plank have both done more than most alums and they owe the University nothing.
Honest question - what has Brin ever done for the University? I know on many occasions people have mentioned his father's connection to the school, but I'm admittedly in the dark on Sergey's contributions. Certainly doesn't seem to be anything close to the way that Plank supports the alma mater.
It's been covered and I suspect this isn't the whole story.
Not a big fan of Bloomy's attempts to legislate human behavior, but you can't help but be impressed at how he has given away bundles. Good for him ... and JHU.
Brin's family has given money. I know the father donated his house (~400K). The University engaged Brin years ago and he gave some money, but then seemed like he got more connected to Stanford and is essentially completely un-engaged with UMD right now.
Plank is a rich dude no doubt, but not in the same league as Brin or Bloomberg. Also as others have pointed out, Brin and Plank are both not in that philanthropic age that Bloomberg is.
Stanford had to wait a while to get their share of Phil Knight and now the GSB went from one building to what might as well be a city block, the Knight Management Center.
