The Hagel hearings should be awesome.
Who was the last Senator to really get ripped during a confirmation process in the Senate?
Tower? Did he even get that far? How about that 'roving hands' Republican liberal from, I think, WA?

Hagel is the worst kind of DC "maverick" and right at home with sunshine Dems who voted for the Iraq war, tried to bail when it became unpopular, opposed the surge, and lack the integrity to admit they were wrong and Bush was right.
Kerry is an utter mediocrity full of bluster and therefore a fit for this State Dep't and a good choice to secure Assad's exile since he praised him as a "reformer."
Brennan's the worst of the bunch--the classic DC careerist hack who's almost always wrong and never in doubt (my CIA buddies are not excited). And yet, I think POTUS gets his folks unless they're obviously unqualified/unfit. I do hope they each get their departments heavily cut thru sequester b/c they are unlikely to correct the drift of any of the agencies.
I'm not crazy about any of those choices, but I'd take them w/o complaint if it meant we could keep out the real wreckers at EPA, Interior, etc. The energy socialists and green wienies here are killing industry.
I can't see anyone else besides Lew replacing Geithner. With 2 weeks to get someone in, almost has to be an "inside person" that Obama is comfortable with.
Would expect announcement by end of week or beginning of next week at latest.
ahmadinejad has to be happy about the nomination, given hagel's disdain for jews and teh gays
Obama doesn't seem to know many people, they way they shuffle from agency to agency, cabinet post to cabinet post, etc.
Lew is a hack of the highest order so i hope that isn't the case
CIA folks should be happy with Brennan. In that job, your access/credibility with the President is probably the most important qualification. There's so much bureaucratic competition, the fact that Obama is putting one of his most trusted foreign policy advisors to head it will elevate the CIA and everyone in it.
As for Hagel and Iraq, the difference is democrats who supported Iraq has everything to gain by changing positions in 06ish. Republicans had everything to lose.
The Hagel hearings won't be as juicy as people think, there's a lot of bluster but little actual opposition. AIPAC, HRC, ADL are all sitting this one out. The Grahams and McCains of the world will want to get their neocon talking points in, other Rs will want retribution for his turning on them on Iraq, Schumer will want a few more MTP appearances to fondle his ego, but presidents always get their nominees and he'll get 70 votes.
So the same people who will call anyone who says a negative word about Israel as anti-semetic, are now going to go crazy because he called the Israeli lobby, the Jewish lobby, Think about that one.....
The real reason we are hearing this is because Hagel is not all gung ho about going to war with Iran....so his old friends who want more war are all pissed off.
Depends on which CIA folks we're talking about. Lots of people, including in the CIA, want the CIA to get back to its core intel mission and away from the kinetic drone wars stuff. So in that respect, many were probably rooting pretty hard for Michael Morrell (deputy director and current acting director) to get the nod.
On the other hand, it's absolutely true that the biggest asset a CIA director can have is the confidence of the president. So fair point.
It's time to bring back Bill Bradley.
good article from the WS on hagel
Read conservative news, blogs and opinion about anti-Semitism, Barack Obama, Chuck Hagel, Congress, Defense, Israel, Jews and Pentagon from The Weekly Standard, the must read magazine available in online edition.
NYCTerp is now OCTerp
LOL at Jack Lew. A guy who has barely worked a day in private sector over a 40 yr career to head Treasury.
Worse pick than Hagel or Rice IMO. Sends a clear message about what the White House thinks about our finances.
Go away, KA!
yeah, I was going to post in an earlier thread he just doesn't care about the position.
I think every american who is un or under-unemployed, underwater on their mortgage should know how Obama feels about America's economy. It's more idealogy and less on competency.
if republicans would like to pick the presidents cabinet i suggest that next time they actually win the election
I often downvote you on political threads, but this made me chuckle.
it's not about policy or partisan-ship just go with competence. I thought (and was wrong) that Geithner was the right pick at the time.
At this point we need a guy who has earned a paycheck and has real world experience. I don't care who it is just someone who has earned a paycheck.
Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis is stepping down. I'm sure there's a community organizer he can drop into the position.
Would anyone outside that hideous building notice if DoL disappeared tomorrow? Oh wait...there'd be no one to check on whether I'm prominently displaying my minimum wage rate posters.
i was thinking union cronie, but that'll do
