That's a really good point. I think you're right.
But more important: "It makes it much harder, perhaps impossible, for Romney to begin to tack back to the center to appeal to the centrist voters, an absolute necessity for the fall campaign after the free-range extremism of the Republican primary. Every time Romney makes a move, or even a head-fake, it becomes an Etch-a-Sketch moment.
I've been thinking about this all night: Eric Fehrnstrom's Etch A Sketch gaffe yesterday may go well beyond a momentary embarrassment and become a campaign-defining disaster, much as John Kerry's gaffe — which came at almost exactly the same point in that...
Why is this a disaster?
It is the truth. Everyone knows he was a Mass. governor. Pro choice etc.
He is a moderate forced to throw a few bones to the whacko religious nuts in the republican party. Everyone knows the pendulum will swing back towards the middle when he faces Obama. It is the only chance the Pubs have of defeating Obama.
You cant have a candidate whose platform is reversing DADT and throwing every roadblock imaginable in the way of women's reproductive rights. The majority of voters are just not that interested. They want better jobs, and fiscal santitity. And most of us-secure borders.
Many of Pitt's 58 "rushing attempts" were the result qb Tino Sunseri fleeing the pocket like a man whose clothes were on fire.
God knows I crave santitity.
I don't know what you mean, but it had the cadence of a joke.
If there's one thing history has taught us, it's that gaffes in March are a whole lot less important than gaffes in September or October.
Any centrist who's legitimately undecided between candidates and has an open mind is reasonably likely to understand that candidates track back to the middle from the right/left after the primaries are over. Sure, he shouldn't have said it, but it's myopic to think that this is going to make a difference. If Obama wins, it's not going to be because of a stupid comment Romney's adviser made in March.
The problem isn't that he said it now. The problem is that every time he tacks center on something in the general, there will be 3 gazillion references to "etch-a-sketch" in the media afterwards describing the move. Just when everyone was getting "flip flop" fatigue, they handed the media a new term. Oh, and the giveaway etch-a-sketch's at the DNC in September are probably already on order.
This will follow him all the way until November. It won't cost him the election, but it's a problem. One of many.
There were literally dozens of people walking around with Etch-a-Sketches outside a Romney rally yesterday. This is the best thing to happen to that product in its history.
Etch a Sketch is made by the Ohio Art Company and trades on the pink sheets under OART. Off 20% today with a 52-wk range of $3-$12.50. Was around $4/share till last week. Something pretty insane about that.
I don't disagree, I just don't think it's a problem with the voters who will actually have the potential to cost him the election. I think there's a huge portion of independents who recognize that candidates move back to the center in literally every election.
Yeah, his flip flopping was going to be brought up regardless, but now it has a great new name and a funny visual gag to go along with it.
How the hell do etch a sketches work anyway
Yes, but he also has an authenticity problem with independents, and this plays into that. Tacking is one thing, not showing that you have any real core beliefs is another.
Tragedy will strike when a political figure seeking to mock Romney will shake an etch a sketch but accidentally drop it, causing the screen to break. Hundreds will inhale the surely poisonous contents.
Nevermind, I read that wrong.

A good deal of independent voters are referred to by polsters as "low-information" voters. These kind of schemas or memes are exactly what ends up destroying you with them.
Interesting. Santorum pretty directly suggests that people may as well stick with Obama if Romney is going to be the candidate...
Hey Rick, I thought politics was a team sport? Stop being a sore loser and take one for the team.
They may vote for him but people just don't like the guy.
When Americans are asked what one word comes to mind when thinking about Mitt Romney, no single term stands out. The most frequent responses are “no” or
Mitt is up 13 in Wisconsin according to a new Rasmussen poll. If he sweeps on April 3 I think the pressure will rise substantially on the others to get out.
Go away, KA!
Nobody excited about Cajun Country??? lol
