Summary of the column: Americans keep electing republicans who want to enact policy. We don't like that. We disagree with their policies. We are smart, so that means their policies must be extreme.
I think it's going to be Portman because he's one of those guys who won't turn off a certain demographic of the party. Rubio is a risky choice (see Dan Quayle, but I'm not comparing the two) and so is Ryan, but I don't think anyone can find fault with Portman.
I think the GOP is going to make a big play for the Midwest this cycle, and use guys like Portman, Pawlenty and Daniels to do it.
Yeah, I think the whole notion of a VP candidate adding much to a campaign is overrated. I think Portman could help a little in Ohio, and he won't be a liability on the trail.
I have mixed feelings on the white house correspondent's dinner. On the one hand I think it is disgusting and irresponsible of the media to engage in this annual circle jerk. On the other hand the stand-up is usually pretty hilarious.
Also I officially take issue with the media titling their circle jerk "Nerd Prom." When you invite Kim Kardashian your event loses whatever semblance of intelligence it may have had.
It's the ultimate humblebrag. Someone tweeted earlier something like "WHCD celebrates everything that is wrong with Washington. And it's awesome."
Anyone else watching Obama troll republicans?
Calling Romney by name.
Yeah- I dont think they were laughing.
Larry Sabato @LarrySabato
I don't think Secret Service agents appreciated the joke at their expense. Maybe they'll stop for lights on the way back to the WH
Man, Obama's joke about eating a pit bull should have gotten a bigger laugh. I think the audience is so uncomfortable with the idea of laughing at Obama they weren't sure if self-deprecating humor was allowed.
MSNBC showed a crowd shot of the reaction to that joke, and the people who got it were dying, and the other ones were mortified because they didn't get it and thought he said something awful about Palin.
LarrySabato Thinking back on all presidents from Ike to Obama, only 2 were naturally, spontaneously funny: JFK & Reagan. Didn't need writers.

I was not paying the closest of attention but I did not get it either.
I'm watching on delay, I thought Jimmy Kimmel killed. The Marcus Bachmann pink slip joke went over everyone's head
Not as good as Seth Meyers imo, but funny.
Agreed, I thought Kimmel was very good.
Marginal- I have seen better. I have seen worse.
If I want real comedy, I'll read the Wash Post or NY Times

It's helped O that he's not been plagued at every step by an opposition determined to distort and attack his actions abroad. And now that that opposition has hypocritically pivoted to bellicosity (or at least O has), there's no discernible policy approach guiding it. So now we have warfare, but we're not sure what the purpose of it is. And we have a gun shy Republican opposition afraid to make too much of it because of embarrassment over nation-building mistakes in Iraq and a historical soft spot for all things "military." And a traditionally dovish Democrat foreign policy willing to subordinate its inclinations for political calculation.
This won't end well.
Didn't he also marry his mistress while POTUS? Didn't he also have a custom tub installed as I believe he got stuck in the normal sized tub in the White House living quarters?

How many such "parties" in the White House has Obama had? A hundred?
neal990 is pawning a few folks in the last several pages of this thread!
Very good work with numerous up votes...
I was watching 24 season 3 this weekend and it hit me that we haven't ever had a true bachelor president. Will we ever have a president under 50 years old who is single? Can you imagine how much pussy that president would get? The last one we had was JFK. Reading some of stories of him were ridiculous like how he phoned one of his secretaries at her college dorm room with an alias so he could fly her in to bang her (he also took her Vcard).
