I love this show. Maggie Smith gets the richest lines.
Tried to watch the first episode of season 3 last night w/ the gf and was honestly pretty bored. This after having spent 15-20 minutes watching that 5 minute recap video of the first two seasons, pausing and asking questions to get the plot down.
To me, it's nothing more than an historical soap opera:
-Twist added to storyline
-Someone in corner of room overseas or overhears twist
-Said person uses knowledge for their own gain or tells another, who does
-Issue is overcome with an added character who saves the day or a new twist is introduced
And what's with the no commercials? Come on. When am i supposed to go grab a beer or take a leak?
I agree with you but I am just strangely fascinated by that type of life. It just seems so bizarre
Lol this was my exact same experience. I enjoyed it a little more than you seemed to though. I'll stick with it with her and earn some major brownie points in the process.
I was just looking for a reason to complain and get out of watching it. Unfortunately, the gf refuses to spring for the dvr service.
Help an OWG out.
Netflix has Season 1 which I just finished. Now I'm hooked. Where can I find season 2? How do hook a computer to my tv to play it on the tv? How many seasons have there been?
There have been 3 seasons. The third is airing in the US currently. It's only 7-8 episodes per season. Do you have TiVo? Cable?
I have both (Verizon). It's not on demand. I have an online netflix acct but they only have season 1.
Amazon Instant Video (formerly know as Video on Demand) has all seasons. There is no monthly fee like Netflix. Its pay-as-you-go. You can download directly to Tivo.
Amazon Prime has the first two season on streaming. No need to buy one at a time if you have the $80 a year subscription.
I agree that as far as storyline, it's basically 'The Young and The Restless' set in WWI era England.
That said, it's well acted and directed and the set and costume design are great. And I think they do a good job highlighting the weird social dynamics that existed between the upper class and the help. There are plenty of worse shows my wife could watch. At least she isn't into 'Real Housewives' or some garbage like that.
I watch it and am strangely fascinated by it. Really good acting.
I know my daughter has watched all the seasons of it so far (the UK seasons) through streaming in the US. I will find out if there is a way to find streaming versions of all the seasons or not.
Just google "watch downton abbey online". Many sites will have it. Projectfreetv, 1channel, etc...
I got season one and season two for my wife for her bday, and said I would watch an episode or two with her. I just started season two, and I have to admit this show is really good. The last TV drama I watched regularly was The Wire.
I don't really disagree with the formula someone describes above either. I guess the acting, creativity used in repeating the formula and the historical period of the show make it interesting. .
Last night I went to the basement and used our treadmill. When I came upstairs, this was my house:
Hulu has season 1 and 2 as well.
Yeah it's pretty much like every woman at my office today is on their period.
Just watched. Well that was depressing. No water works for me though.
I got a little misty when Maggie Smith came over the day after and almost staggered in the entryway from grief.
I only caught the Screen Actors Guild Awards for a couple of minutes but it happened to be when Michelle Dockery was coming up on stage for a Downton Abbey win. I'm surprised nobody else mentioned her dress..
