In one of the resignation articles, when asked to describe him politically, someone said that Pope Benedict XVI's politics were "to the right of Rick Santorum on social issues and to the left of Nancy Pelosi on economic issues."
"And I try to har-mo-nize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings...
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden."
Who does Stuckey have a future bet on?
FTR, I refrained from a d/v. I only d/v when people complain about a d/v.
Im ready for aa 5th of vodica to end my feels.
Neil Patrick Harris would be awesome!
If Jeff abdicates what is the equivalent of Pope Benedict retiring to a small monastery nearby?
The Roman Catholic Church is the "root" Christian faith and traces its origins to Peter who was martyred in Rome and there is a direct historical link of the office of Pope to St. Peter. The pope and the Roman Catholic religion both claim their "magisterium" (authority) through that lineage.
Too many people never see the historical evolution of the "church" even before Martin Luther and the Protestant denominations came onto the historical scene. As a matter of fact, all of the "orthodox" religions (Russian, Serbian, Arminian, Greek and so on and so on) had/have a patriarch of their own, and none accepted the authority of the pope where Greek Catholics did and Greek Orthodox didn't. And then there is the Coptic Church which also is dated back to the time of Christ and is still out there.
As a lapsed or small "c" Catholic, I thought I'd throw that out there for you all of you Philistines to ponder while we wait for the smoke.
Robert Langdon better solve this one quick. There are dark forces at play.
I'm pretty sure hating Maryland basketball fans is in the job criteria.
That's not really accurate, but whatever. The Orthodox church(es) basically split because they don't believe in having a pope that is essentially the hand of god. None of their leaders claim the power the pope claims in the RCC. Further, they are really all the same church.
I was worried nobody would notice.
I noticed but didn't want to ruin the surprise for anyone
I'm just saying there were a lot of "churches" in the ancient world and each had their own leaders, and none claimed the authority that the RCC and the pope did. It started with the "on this rock" passages and the linkage to Peter as bishop of the Roman Church which ends up dominant in Western Civilization and our history. And the Coptics are really not a part of the Catholic/Orthodox or Protestant faiths and are as different as the Mormons from the mainstream.
yeah I wasn't speaking about coptics at all, that shit crazy
What a little, little man you are Pauly.
For such a time as this.
My wife reminds me all the time.
I would have thought bigturtle would drive the Catholic Church is awful train faster than Paul. I've yet to read a single poster imply that the Pope is/was the Anti-Christ.
is this thread to talk about the Cadaver Synod?
Why not? That's a great story and we have to kill some time until the conclave re-convenes. Boy, it was an ignorant world in the Dark Ages with the Cadaver Synod just another of those incredible things that happened that you just couldn't make up.
nope, no pope

Nothing he said was inaccurate.
First off, that second photo looks a lot lighter than the first. But more importantly, is that bird on fire?
No Borgia references?
All I can picture is Jeremy Irons.
I just want to know who is passing information off to Lunardi
I'm hoping for a mass hallucination of the voice of god instructing that instead of electing a new pope the cardinals should build one.
