Even though the Catholic Church is a corrupt, fraudulent organization that feasts on the baseless beliefs of billions...I just can't resist another election!
Scola of Milan is the Hillary 2008, coming in as the heavy favorite, but the Americans Dolan and O'Malley are getting some buzz as well as Ouellet from Canada. What about a black pope? Arinze from Nigeria or Turkson from Ghana? I mean, it's only been 1500 years since they had one!
Also, as a bonus feature, CNN election coverage continues to beclown itself with...a virtual reality Sistine Chapel!
What is exactly the role of the pope?
Is he just the leader of the Catholic Church, but just like a dude? Or is he somehow supposed to be connected w/ God?
If it's the latter, how are you electing someone that's connected w/ God? Are all the candidates connected?
Religion is dumb
I just embarrassed myself with this post
He's the guy who knows a God who can help you with what you need done.
I was hoping that Conclave! was some new Sci Fi movie/TV Show I could get excited about and not just the quasi-deification of some old Catholic dude.
Without the catholic church there would be no Dematha and you would have, I believe, gone to Bladensburg for HS.
Every once in a while, wrongs make a right!
Paulie was probably molesting the priests and not the other way around. teehee!!!
As a Catholic, I'm left scratching my head how this still gets International news coverage greater than the elections of some 2nd tier country.
Im ready for aa 5th of vodica to end my feels.
I think the US Pope thing is a media-created thing over here. Current Pope odds from betfair (which is a UK-based site):
Angelo Scola (71, ITA) - 25%
Odilo Scherer (63, BRA) - 16%
Peter Turkson (64, GHA) - 12%
Marc Ouellet (68, CAN) - 8%
Tarcisio Bertone (78, ITA) - 7%
Peter Erdo (60, HUN) - 4%
Christoph Schonborn (68, AUS) - 4%
Sean Patrick O'Malley (68, USA) - 3%
Which puts the field at about 21%. Dolan's odds are about 1%. I didn't realize how much of a crapshoot this was though - even the favorite only has a 1 in 4 chance.
Until I’m getting Nate Silver’s opinion on the likely voter turnout of the Sub-Saharan Cardinal demographic I’m going to be disappointed
Don't count out Mark Turgeon as a darkhorse. I'm pretty sure he's a Catholic, and he does have experience dealing with an institution that's greatly harmed itself over the past decade.
[Hogie]And he's also having trouble recruiting talented young men at a high level.[/Hogie]
"And I try to har-mo-nize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings...
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden."
The Pope is "God's representative on Earth".
I saw Dolan on tv a week or two ago and he said that the chances of him becoming the pope were roughly the same as his chance of starting at 3B for the Yankees this year.
This morning, driving into work...the news guy on WMAL (should be a respected jounalistic source, right?) said the cardinals were gathering in Rome for the "enclave"...
wow, couldn't believe it. Didn't he at least watch Angels & Demons...
I believe they only vote twice a day (just once today), so this thing could go for a while. Then again I think the longest conclave ever was 5 days, so a consensus seems to be built pretty quick.
Need two-thirds plus 1 to win.
Go away, KA!
I was once self-described as "The pope of chili town"
Pope of Chil town would have been more impressive. Granting clemency to Asians for offenses committed at grocery establishments, and excommunicating small pet bears.
If Jeff ever dies or resigns, all the Premium Mafia Bosses will meet in a conclave to pick a new leader.
You'd think Jakob or Seth would have the inside track, but those are "Old Testament" names if you catch my drift.
Hogie is the Antipope.
It is not for us to decide. Jacob will choose a replacement. He already has a list.
Dolan is still a bit too young to play for the Yankees
First vote has ended apparently. Black/white smoke to come shortly.
