As a lawyer with experience with Guardian Ad Litem, no government agency inspires fear in me quite like DSS/CSS/CPS (Department of Social Services, Child Social Services, Child Protective Services, whatever).
It is a combination of all of the worst possible things: ludicrous amounts of power in the hands of people who are over-worked and have the combined intelligence of a handful of gravel. The social workers and staff that run DSS are the lowest common denominator of people - truly the bottom of the administrative barrel.
Do they have big hearts? Yes, some of them do. Does that more often than not lead to an abhorrent lack of objectivity within their daily duties? Oh hell yes it does.
You can be a saint with a perfect record and God's protection - but if your neighbor calls DSS with a complaint (manufactured or real) and the right/wrong person at DSS picks up the phone - POOF - your kids are gone. Just...gone.
OH SHIT! WHAT NOW RAISE! YOU FUCKED UP!
well THAT is awkward
Same thing (sorta) happened with my mom's boss. They needed to renew some sort of regulatory compliance thing, and it got denied because there was a felony charge attached to his name. Turns out it was just someone else with a similar (not even the same) name. She had to call the FBI to get it fixed.
Well, I mean, that’s what it is. I doodoo and then listen to Katy Perry.
This is why parents should be fined for giving their kids common names. I'm lucky to have a unique name.
"oops, our bad! so... do you want us to remove your image from the website as well?"
The State of New York has been trying to collect back taxes from my dad for a dude with a name that's 1 letter off from his for years. Shit is so dumb.
Things like this would only be cool if we replaced CSS with hot chicks and I was named Brad Pritt
I went to get a copy of my Social Security card a while back and the woman kept looking at me strange. She asked what year I was born, I said 85... SS had it as 58 in their records.
She must have thought I was a vampire or something.
Don't you mean Yoonikque?
Or you know, fraud.
Trying to continually steal money from you and horrifically stubborn about changing her mind?
Who is your wife dealing with, Debbie Yow?
"And I try to har-mo-nize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings...
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden."
A reach, but I'll allow it.
+0.5 internet points. Gonna need to make up that other 0.5 elsewhere. For the bonus, fill in the blanks.

Oh dear. Someone is obviously an SATII baby.
I think I give him the points for the hilarious whiff.
I once got a call from a woman who was looking for a guy with the same name as me for child support. Apparently at one time he had also been a cop in the town where I lived. Luckily it was the woman herself who called me and realized I wasn't him.
I thought it was an analogy! What am I reading?!?
These stories give me great confidence in universal background checks for guns.
Cool, you're close to being able to get benefits while they're still around.
So this deadbeat mom woman is from California, MD (in St. Mary's County). The CSS that is harrassing my wife is not the MD CSS, but the State of California Child Support Services. My wife called St. Mary's, and SMC is confused, because the information they have is clearly for a different person ("she doesn't even spell her name the same!"), different SSN, different family, DOB, different everything. They they have no idea where the State of California would have gotten my wife's information. The information filed with California is for the correct person, but apparently CA hasn't accepted or processed it. So St. Mary's asked my wife to fax them her information, and they are going to look into it. My wife talked to the California CSS people, and they said to ignore the paperwork, and are sending her a form to fill out for mistaken identity. My wife passed that information to the St. Mary's county people, and gave the CA people the contact information of the St. Mary's person she was dealing with, so hopefully this will all get worked out.
Can she threaten legal action to get this done faster and get the CSS to stop harassing her? There has to be a way to get them to stop.
i live inf california, md... i wonder if i know this person!
I enjoy my trips to California, MD for DAU trainings. So many awesome middle America dining options and I stay at the La Quinta Inn right across from Chipotle.
