As someone who travels to many Embassies, this really pisses me off and makes me sad...
The are saying Marines died in Libya and these guys are so young, just doing a job...without much a chance when crap happens...
I am travelling to Mumbai tonight, so it will be interesting to see what the Post there has setup just in case...I know, not Middle East, but things always seem to pop off....
F these zealots...
Jackie Robinson isn't dirty. This isn't Pack Pride.
Wouldn't that be nice! I'm in the camp that says when Americans fall victim to a terrorist attack, you fall in line with the commander in chief, and you honor the fallen. Immediately using a tragedy for its political value and to take pot shots at the president is pretty telling about one's character and priorities (as if anyone in America doesn't already know who they're voting for).
edit: sorry for the rant, not sure why this kind of stuff still surprises me

"The U.S. Embassy said that it "condemns the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims -- as we condemn efforts to offend believers of all religions.""
That quote is unbelievable. The US government is condemning free speech.
Mubarak would not still be their leader had we stayed out of it. He was on his way out long before we played our hand in that rebellion. Same thing with Libya.
What didn't happen in these two countries was our Iraq/Afghanistan-style build-a-government program, so in that sense, we stayed out of both situations. No matter what happens in these countries, we still need embassies there, like we needed in Tehran when the Shah fell. Embassies are supposed to be sacrosanct, and the precedent of the Iranian embassy only proved that the extremists are more than willing to "go there".
So this isn't our fault at all. These are two more examples of how far extremists are willing to go, and we in our civilized world didn't expect this sort of thing. And this is what happens when we're passive after governments fall in the region.
Not surprised Romney is trying to use this for political gains. Obama, or whatever Dem, would probably have done the same thing. Sad state of our political system.
Yep. Politics should stop at our shores.

I may be wrong but I don't think they were marines. More likely Diplomatic Security Service.
Seeing the pics of the dead ambassador just pisses me off so much...
f those animals
Every Post I have been in has had US Marines....even in small posts such as Surabaya in Indonesia, St. Petersburg, etc...
If you must know and to put this in context, the White House made their statement BEFORE the Embassies were stormed and anyone died. They were condemming an obscure nutjob right wing "preacher" and that is far different than restricting free speech. This guy posted a video on youtube calling Muhammed gay and other stuff (which had only 6000 views as of last night) and basically the White House said we need to respect all religions and condemned it. The video does not justify the morons on their end razing the embassies but that nutjob preacher got just what he wanted...more publicity for his video. Now the Muslim morons are making more people aware of the video and that is counter productive to their cause.
Slamming Romney is just trying to deflect the underlying broader issue with the Obama Administration statement. It is the apologetic, "it's our fault" tone that has been a hallmark of the Obama Administration. Changing language and words to for "softer" communication on terrorism etc. I am far from a war monger, but this apologetic stance has been and is pathetic. They assassinated our ambassador and the first words out of the administration condemn the video makers?
Anyone defending it and accusing Romney of political points is drinking Kool-aid. It is the exact situation that shows the contrast of mindset between the two candidates. Why wouldn't anyone who is fed up with the apologetic attitude of this administration slam that statement?
That video was out for 2 months and this happens on 9-11 in both Egypt & Libya. Coincidence?
As BK said, then you get Taliban-era Afghanistan, or al-Shabab running roughshod in Somalia, or Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula taking over portions of south Yemen, or fill in any other place you'd like that fits the pattern.
It is an option (see left-leaning Democrats and libertarians like Ron Paul), but it comes with its own pitfalls.
And as to why the Embassy was attacked, there will ALWAYS be a reason in the fevered mind of religious fanatics. They will find a slight, however small, or conjure one up from thin air. Their irrationality and evil is not an excuse for people, even religion-bating morons, to have to shut down free speech.
This is when you miss Christopher Hitchens, who touched on this exact subject in ways much more eloquent than I can.
"And I try to har-mo-nize with songs the lonesome sparrow sings...
There are no kings inside the Gates of Eden."
This. It's a stupid movie and it's not our fault. Even referencing it in the statement is an insult.
The statement should have essentially said "fuck these lunatics"
Go away, KA!
This is an awful situation and I do not mean to make light of anyone's death. I just wanted to comment on the picture. **** these guys for John Walling. That's OURS.
They are now saying:
An administration official later told ABC News that “no one in Washington approved that statement before it was released and it doesn’t reflect the views of the U.S. government.”
Yeesh. The response to this has been butchered.
Romney calls Obama administration response to Libya attacks
So your upset that Romney is critical of Obama who rather than condemned the attacks apologizes to the attackers?
Obama is more concerned with hurting feelings rather than the killing of Americans and we should back him?
For such a time as this.
This is the real point here. The problem with the administration's response is that they fell for the false pretext of this, hook line and sinker. This isn't about the video at all, and it's being choreographed by familiar players.
The NY Post's front page today put it perfectly: "IT'S JUST A STUPID MOVIE!"
I will never understand the mindset of people whose first reaction to a slight against their religion, or their anything really, is to say, "OK, let's go out and kill some people," especially people who had nothing to do with it. Learn to take a fucking joke, assholes.
Just to clarify, I don't have a problem with criticizing the President on how he handles a situation. I'm just saying there's a time and a place to do that and it isn't within hours of Americans being killed overseas.
And like I said, Democrats would've done the same thing if there was a Republican in office. That's just how politicians are now, whenever there's a tragedy they're rushing to the media to try and gain political points.
This is not factually correct in any way whatsoever. You need to revisit the timeline and actions on what happened the last 18 months or so in Egypt and Libya.
Or maybe just read some wikipedia to get a rough idea of what actually happened.
The sitting presidents first reaction is not to defend Americans but to apologize to the attackers and you side with him?
Even Hillary Clinton is defying him.
We told you this would be the result of our ME policy yet you ignored us and now you want to criticize us (conservatives)
Honestly, there's a solid portion of their culture that has a mindset that is a few centuries behind the times when it comes to their religon. And there are enough people in the world willing to manipulate those people to violence for their own ends.
He did not apologize. His statement wasn't as tough-minded as I would have liked, but please don't lie about what Obama actually said.
I think that statement is embarrassingly bad, but for fuck's sake, that wasn't the administration's first response to our ambassador being killed. Can some of you at least pretend to weave facts into your arguments.
