College Park?

  • Hi guys, this is the first time I've visited your board and I didn't know where to ask. I'm a junior in HS and my college counselor told me to look into University of Maryland College Park. I live in Hawaii so I've never been or heard of the place but I'm pretty interested. Can you guys tell me some basic info, anything would be helpful.

Haha thanks, I have no idea what everyone is talking about. Yeah I'm a UM fan but this college thing is scary and I really want to get off this island.

  • The campus is beautiful. The student body is fairly diverse, though with heavy New Jersey influence. It's right outside DC and a manageable drive to Baltimore, so there's lots to do and lots to see. Unfortunately the town College Park itself is a dump. You'll find a better bar scene at most colleges, but there is still plenty of drunken fun to be had. As a Maryland student you are expected to be classless and to have older posters talk down to you. If necessary, take a bullet for Turgeon and if possible re-direct it at Edsall.

  • All kidding aside, I'm a current student so let me kick it to you straight, homie:

College Park is kind of crappy. However, if you're going to be a freshman in the fall of '12, you'll be here for ALOT of major improvements and upgrades to the area. By the time you're here there will likely be 5 legitimate bars (not a TON but at one point about a year and half ago there were only 2), a new Whole Foods grocery store that is within walking distance and you might get to see the Purple Line metro rail by the time you graduate (though I doubt it).

You're soooooo close to DC and it's really easy and accessible to get down there. I work at a restaurant in the city and love it. It's about a 20 minute metro ride to downtown DC.

The people are diverse, the campus is huge and you have alot of academic options as well. I've liked most, if not all of my professors and you can really learn alot about whatever it is that you want to do.

I love UMD, and you will too.

Purple line won't be finished until 2020 at the earliest

  • It's impressive how College Park is growing. I used to go to games when there was nothing there. Now, new apartment buildings with restaurants and bars growing in numbers. Once East Campus starts up it will be a huge boost to the city.

I know a lot of great people going to school there this year (seniors, Im a junior in hs too) so its a really fun place with a good reputation. One day I hope to go there, but if I dont I'll always try to visit the university.

  • As others have said, College Park itself is nothing special, kind of dumpy, but it's not going to limit the amount of fun you'd have here. It is definitely not the traditional bar-laden college town with nothing around for miles besides the campus. But there are a handful of bars in CP, and DC is very close, although kind of expensive by college standards. Baltimore is about a 45 minute drive. NYC is about a four hour drive.

Maryland has a passionate fanbase, especially for basketball. Our new coach Mark Turgeon just finished his first season and most here are exciting with the direction of the program. We should be very good in the coming years. Football is, uh, in a little slump right now, but hopefully that will change during your college career. Tickets are free for students. Support for non-revenue sports is pretty strong relatively speaking (soccer, lacrosse, women's basketball, etc). Every type of intramural and club sport is available for you to play. The gym facilities are good. The campus is beautiful. The student body is diverse. Academics are good to excellent depending on your field of study. There is also obviously every type of pro sports team with diehard fanbases in the area, and no shortage of cultural and historical attractions nearby. Lots of opportunities for internships and research--and jobs if you're staying in the area after graduation.

Any idea what you want to major in?

  • Have you ever been to Ann Arbor or D.C.? Be prepared for four months of snow if you go to Michigan. UMD has a great campus, and a much milder climate. I had a son play for the Terps football team and graduate, and he absolutely loved it. Check it out.

No, I have no idea at all. There are a few people in my family who are doctors but I'm really not sure yet. It seems like the University of Maryland has a lot of opportunities though. How big are the classes? Thanks for all the answers guys, from what you've told me it seems like a pretty nice place!
