Chronic pulled muscle pain - (massage?)

  • So, I'm getting old. I pulled a muscle or popped a tendon a few years ago, and it has been a constant nag ever since. A few months ago I aggravated it again, and the pain put me off my lifting for a few days. Ever since then, it has been constantly sore and tight. I've even had to take some ibuprofen to sleep a few nights.

    Is there any chance that a chair massage or something could help this?

    I'm prone to get all kinds of muscle strains (especially since I'm a big old dude who does BJJ 6-8 times a week). Ibuprofen only goes so far. Ice usually helps a bit, but what really works (in order of effectiveness, imo) is:

    1. ART (from a chiro who is trained in ART)
    2. theracane
    3. foam roller
    4. lacrosse ball
    5. joint mobility drills (more preventative)

    Some muscle groups react differently to different methods from the above. I'm prone to neck/trap strains and the theracane is money for that and hamstrings. The foam roller works better for me for back, quads, hip flexors.

    Even if nothing is hurting, I spend about a half hour most evenings just foam rolling and doing joint mobility as preventative measures. It's made an incredible difference in my ability to recover and keep training.

    Where does it hurt?

    Foam roller is probably good for that, but if its up a bit more towards the trap I've found the theracane to be better.

    I agree with this. Right rhomboid pain is miserable. Tweaked it today doing dive-bomber push-ups during my lunch break. Dealing with that right now, cant wait to get home and use mine.
