Celebrating Jerry Garcia's 70th Birthday..........

  • was streamed on Yahoo tonight, and I managed to catch most of it. (It's still going on, and it started at 6:30 Pacific Time.) I had no idea that this would be on and managed to just stumble upon it. But I must say this is good stuff, and like the Dead of old, here we are 4 hours in and they haven't even taken a set break.

  • Can you access stuff that Yahoo streams after the event is over? They plaed for 5 straight hours tonight, but I'd watch that again. Help an OWG out. When Yahoo streams an event, can users replay it at a later date? I'd think sugarmag and colfax would enjoy it at the least. Shoot, it wouldn't surprise me if colfax was there. LOL!!!

What's even cooler is they are now streaming a 1989 concert when Jerry was still with us. But I can't stay up all night regardless of how good the music is. Being old sucks.

  • Dammit....I am in India and wanted to see this.

They were hyping the Grateful Dead movie as a special event at theaters on Jerry's 70th

  • I remember the day he passed away. I was at work and we had a big Dead fan there. I told him the news and all he could muster was "bummer!"

  • So what are they going to do for Pigpen?

Archive.org is better, and as long as the show hasn't been released commerically you can dowload for free.

They just announced this box set from Spring '90 tour that I would highly recommend. They were on fire at the time, the Cap Center shows were some of the best ever.

Good call. I saw this show but I have to say the memory of it is a blur.

The night before is one of the top 5 shows I ever saw. They turned it into the limited release Terrapin Station 3 CD when they were trying to raise funds for a museum type place. Phil's bday show.

That show on the 16th was the breakout of Black Throated Wind and an incredible jam out of Women Are Smarter. I think Jerry was off the persian at that point in time and was playing out of his mind.

  • I was running a coal company and was traveling the day Garcia died, and USA Today was looking for businessmen who had grown up Deadheads to interview for an article on the business page of the paper. A friend of mine worked for them, and he had them call me. I got some ink the next day in their paper.

  • I'm glad someone listened to this. I was camping so I missed it. Mike Gordon was involved. I'm seeing Phish this week, so I am hoping beyond hope that they pull out some Dead in San Francisco.

Phish is quite possibly playing the best in their career at the moment.

I watched the Jerry tribute. It was really mellow. Ended up switching to PornHub after an hour.

On XM this morning, someone was playing a killer cover of Terrapin but couldn't figure out who. Has Phish ever played it? If not them, had to be DSO.

I agree they're playing their best since their hiatus in 2000, but this stuff isn't touching 94-97 when they took far more chances on stage. I'm encouraged that they're starting to extend some songs a bit and hope they have a similar arc to the Dead who had several late year resurgences like 1990

Phish has played it, but not like DSO.

And colfax, 94-97 was like the Dead in '72...young and peaking. Yes, less chances are being taken, but in terms of crafting a coherent set, not jamming excessively and pure tightness, Phish is playing the best music of their career. They are not so much creating on stage anymore...those days are over and for many, those are the best days, but I'll argue all day long about them being tighter today.

Totally forgot I saw that show also. One of the best shows I can recall was 6/25/93. It had a West Coast vibe with the first set in daylight and the band was playing great. The sound was perfect and I was on the grass field (no cover) on Phil's side. Cumberland Blues had a polka feel with Hornsby on the the accordian the entire show.
I'll have to listen to it today.
    Set List:
    Mississippi Half-Step
    Little Red Rooster
    Tom Thumb's Blues
    Althea
    Cassidy
    Cumberland Blues
    Promised Land

    I Know You Rider
    Saint of Circumstance
    Uncle John's Band
    Corina
    drums
    I Need a Miracle

Yeah, Phish played it in VA Beach in 98 I think. Maybe 99.

That's cool. I'm definitely enjoying Phish 3.0 in a big way. I actually stopped listening to them in 2.0 so I'm pretty thrilled with them now. Definitely agree that they're tighter than ever. I just think their greatest strength traditionally is in improv and I hope they'll build on their solid foundation now and incorporate those peaks and valleys a bit more.

That was with Sting as the warmup I think? You take Corrina out of there and it was a great show. IIRC, the next night totally blew.

Absolutely agree. They blew me away out of the gates in the early 90's, melted my brain in the mid to late 90's, had some tumultuous years and are crushing it again today.
