Baltimore Restaurant Recs

  • Taking a business partner out tomorrow night in Baltimore for dinner. Looking for a good seafood or Italian place near the Convention Center/Downtown, what say ye suque, any ideas?

  • Go a few blocks East on Pratt Street to Little Italy-many options there.

  • Rusty Scupper is outstanding for seafood. It overlooks the harbor and has a great view at night.

are you for real about the scupper, or do you hate peq, or has the scupper fixed itself? It was phillips level hot garbage the last time I was there, which was years ago.

I'm not very picky. I've been there 3 or 4 times and liked it. I also don't know what the overall consensus is, but the people I've gone with have liked it.

  • Tijuana Tacos on Fleet. Baddest torta on the planet...and you can pick up some deodorant or a commercial sized bag of rice while you're there.

  • Or Spartan's Pizza in Highlandtown. Used to have an ice bucket full of bud lights for a buck each!

And I agree that Rusty Scupper kinda sucks, but like TG I haven't been there in years. Great view though.

I've been to the Rusty Scupper a few times recently. I'm also not terribly picky, and I thought they were pretty good. I can't tell you the difference between premiere seafood and just pretty good seafood, but I can definitely tell the difference between good seafood and bad seafood, and RS is certainly not bad. If you're looking to impress someone from out of town, combine the at least pretty good food with the atmosphere/view, and it's a great place to take someone. If the person lives in the area, I can imagine there are better places to go.

  • I've only been to the Rusty Scupper a few times but I don't think it's really that bad. It's just pretty overpriced because it's at the Inner Harbor and has a nice view. I've only eaten there once, though, so I can't speak too much on their food. I had their crab cakes last summer and they were fine, but pricey at about $30. I usually just go to the bar, where the drinks are similarly overpriced.

I think the Rusty Scupper is a decent option if you're taking a business client out. As long as you understand it's not going to be cheap, of course. It's easy to get to downtown and it's a nice atmosphere inside. The earlier suggestion about heading over to Little Italy is a good one, too. It's a short walk from the Aquarium and there are some nice places to get Italian and seafood dishes.

  • When I think of the Rusty Scupper the word "steamed" comes to mind.....Not bad, but not a lot of finesse.

have you guys been to phillips? Is RS better than phillips?

I assume you're referring to the Phillip's at Harborplace in the Light Street Pavilion. The Rusty Scupper is not world-class dining by any stretch of the imagination, but I'd choose to go to RS over Philip's 100% of the time. Both are catered to the tourist crowd, but imo Rusty Scupper is much nicer.

  • Rusty Scupper and Tijuana Tacos sound like a disgusting sex act. I heard the Screaming Seagull and Dirty Sanchez have reasonably priced brunches.

  • Re: Little Italy spots

My go-to in Little Italy is always Amicci's. It's very casual, cheap, and the food is good. Their bar is also very casual compared to most of the places in Little Italy. Of course, this is probably not what the OP is looking for when taking a business partner out.

Chiapperelli's is decent. It's pretty much what you'd expect out of a decent Italian place. I like Della Notte a lot more, although quickly looking over their menu I don't see many seafood dishes. Only other place over there I've been to and can recommend is Aldo's, but it's also pretty pricey from what I remember.

  • Convention Center is right on Pratt Street by Harborplace. Cinghiale is in Harbor East, which would be right past Little Italy and right before Fells Point. Not a terribly far walk, but it would probably be worth paying the cheap cab fare to get there. I've never been to Cinghiale but I've heard nothing but good things.

    FortAveTerp

  • Roy's Hawiian Fusion in Harbor East is pretty interesting.

  • We had our office Christmas party at Cinghiale. It was OK. Portions were small. I don't know if it's always that way or not. I certainly wouldn't want to walk there from the convention center, even on a nice day.

Kona Grill opened a couple of months ago, literally a block from the convention center. It's a chain but Mr. Julester and I happened to go there on opening night and it was pretty good. He had a tuna steak sandwich that was spectacular. They also have a sushi bar but I don't know if it's any good. The location's not as good as the Scupper, but it's closer.

I tried to attach the link but it didn't work. http://www.konagrill.com/

  • It depends on how much you want to spend, but if you're willing to spend a bit you should go to Oceanaire (Harbor East) or Black Olive (Fells Point). Those are the two best options for fresh fish and seafood. They're not downtown, but won't be more than a five minute cab drive from the Convention Center.

Cinguale is another good option for Italian in Harbor East. Little Italy is a tough call. There are a lot of good restaurants there, but I'm not sure I'd take someone for business.

    UCHTerp

  • I've heard pukeface things about the kitchen at Rusty Scupper.

Yep, Black Olive is the place for fresh seafood.

  • I'd say they're pretty comparable, Rusty Scupper is just more dressed up.

Edit: Meant to quote TG's post asking about the two.
