Appendectomy Recovery

  • So had the old appendix out yesterday. After about 10 hours of what I thought was just bad gas pain that turned into pretty much the worst pain I ever experienced, my HSA Account is going to get a workout.

Home now (laproscopic surgery is crazy) but for those of you who had the surgery, how long until the ridiculous bloating goes down and how long until my abdominal area doesn't feel like I did about 3000 crunches too many? I hate being convalescent and feeling like a complete waste around the house.

I'm really trying to stay non-narcotic but am contemplating Percocet tonight to help fall asleep. The surgeon was stingy with his prescription.

  • Took about 5 days for me to feel normal again.

You could cut that stuff up ... just sayin'.

Took me at least 10 days to feel "normal"...as in 100%. I think 4/5 days is a pretty good to return to everyday stuff. Swelling should go down in about 3 days.

    9/21/2010...RIP Old IMS.

My abs hurt for a bit longer than that (and I did NOT enjoy having the stitches removed) but the weird bloating/pressure feeling went away in about 6 days. The sore abs were tolerable but that stomach pressure was awful and I felt so much better after it stopped.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. It's really good to know what's coming. Definitely needed the Percoset to sleep last night. And yeah, I think the stomach pressure is more painful than the abdominal pain and will slow me down more to getting back to normal. I've pulled muscles before and can deal with that. Glad that the stomach pressure is what goes away first, even if I am looking at 4 more days of it.

    This.

  • It took me about 2-3 days for that awful painful bloated feeling to go away and about a week until the incision wounds didn't hurt very much anymore.

I took a bunch of dilaudid and was still dying for the first 3-4 days.

  • I had it done when I was in second grade. I remember it being the worst pain I've ever experienced. Was in the hospital for three days or so because I was having a real hard time walking after... Not sure what that was about. Got a week off school and five inch scar out of it.

  • My day had his gall bladder out a couple years and said the worst part was the bloated feeling. Don't remember how long it look for his to go away.

  • taking vicodin will make it worse. Vicodin causes constipation and right now you are suffering from what is called a "post-operative ileus" which basically means the bowel is stunned by the manipulation of it during surgery and it isn't moving.

It resolves over time (2-5 days for your surgery), just eat light, take some fiber, and boom. Glorious bowel movement in a few days

Thanks for the advice. I've only taken Percoset twice, one pill each night to sleep. I want to end it for the reason you've talked about and others.

Just not hungry to eat much right now. But the doc recommended small frequent meals when I'm ready. I didn't realize things froze up because of trauma. I thought it was just because I wasn't eating anything.

  • I had my appendix out via laparoscopy senior year of high school (about 10 years ago). I checked into the hospital on Friday, had the procedure Sunday morning, and was able to go to school on Friday for a partial day to take a midterm. I think I was out of soccer practice for about 6 weeks, but I was feeling pretty good about a 10 days after the procedure and was walking pretty normally at that time. Don't remember much of the first few days after the procedure because of the Percoset. I think I had a lot of milkshakes and mashed potatoes.

    Good luck with your recovery.

  • Yeah, my wife just had it done maybe a month ago. The bad part is probably 5 days or so. You'll definitely feel it linger for a couple of weeks. Even a month later, she still has some lifting issues with our 30lb toddler.
