If I were Trump, I'd drop about $3M on ads that just scroll the names of every member of both houses with a simple message at the end. "Vote for someone else in November 2012."

Trump should just run ads that have Homer saying "When will people get it, democracy...just...doesn't...WORK" and then "Elect Trump President for Life: 2012"

Because of where I work, the facilities do not shut down and security personnel (contractors) still have to work, therefore my company still has to report for work because our contract is paid for through 03/2012 at this point, but if the Govt people aren't here, there is nothing we can do. It's a weird situation as only a few folks here are "Essential" as far as Govt folks go.

This particular impasse could fuck me good. I've had a few job interviews where they told me they're going to wait and see how the budget shakes out on October 1st. I think that's the government equivalent of "it's not you, it's me."

I'm already taking leave on both Oct 3 and 7 and IIRC those who already put in leave would still need to take it even though nobody is going in, so that would suck. Hopefully I'm completely wrong on that one, which knowing the unions is entirely possible. Don't remember what the deal was in March/April.
I saved up an assload of money thats going to pay off student loans so something wouldn't cripple me financially. And if I do get some days off, I can go bug Allenbaba at work.

Worse than the impasse for federal employees is the way everyone is using disaster relief as a political issue. You've got people in North Carolina and the northeast whose business and lives have been destroyed, yet our brilliant leaders feel the need to hash out the same tired showdown based only on posturing.

Shutdown not going to happen apparently. Something about how FEMA didn't actually need the money the House Republicans were trying to hold up. Anyway, bump this thread again in 6 weeks.

The House passed the money for FEMA; they just wanted to take money from somewhere to pay for it; i.e. revenue neutral.
If you listened to Senate Dems this afternoon, they weren't arguing that approoach, just where to take money from.
Bottom line, all of the financial people in FEMA should be sent home for a week for poor work. They found $100M+. DHS probably has a $1-2B left on the books for FY11; they could have thrown FEMA's way, but they the WH wanted the drama.
