I think non-essential government workers should never have to show up ever again.

Are you federal or a contractor?

We've been told that April 18th is one date to keep an eye on. We've also been told that we'd either have to take leave, or get LWOP. I'm a contractor, but I was under the impression the government would still be held responsible for its contracts, meaning we'd get paid.

We're consider critical so we will not shut down. Plus, our contract is paid through the next few years according to our leadership.

I took plenty of pay cuts when my company has having hard times.

Short every govt contractor...boom profit. Short oil...you could make some dough outta this if risky enough.

Wall Street is still grossly overpaid. If you are in the top 1% (may be 5% but I thought you said 1%) of income earners in this country after taking pay cuts, what does that say?

Not hating at all, so don't take it that way. I just am dumbfounded by the amount of money people on Wall Street make. I wish I had the knack for it, but finances really are not my cup of tea.

I'm not a govie anymore (was military now a contractor), but I can say that there are some people who are worthless. However, even some of the non-essentials are just are critical as the essential employees. For example, somewhere I used to work had a 24/7 work center who were considered critical. I was not one of the 24/7 workers and was labeled non-essential. My job was to support the 24/7 mission by researching, acquiring, testing and implementing new technologies (among other things) to ensure that our mission was satisfied in the most efficient manner possible. The 24/7 workers knew how to operate the systems, but they were not knowledgeable enough to fix a problem, investigate why it happened, and take countermeasures to ensure that it does not happen again.

Point is that not all non-essential workers are worthless. Essential is just the bare minimum required to get the job done if things are going smoothly. Unfortunately, things rarely move smoothly in some environments.
