No but why would you? You have a fried potato addiction you just can't shake?

  • Fried potatoes are pretty awesome.

Based on this thread it sounds like a diet that I'd be able to hop in pretty easily, gonna have to actually read up on it sometime tonight or this weekend. TFCIT.

  • Just have one cheat meal a week or something. You usually end up bloated and regretting the cheat meal.

I'm not looking forward to a week of English cuisine and airplane food. Going to try to be healthy about it, but I've tried the gluten-free meals on airplanes thinking it would be healthier--- not only did they not seem healthier, but I would rather gnaw my own anus off than have to eat one again.

i could survive on baked....i just don't feel full without potato in my life....i have dropped from 20 meals a week with some type of potato to 4 or 5.

i've also eliminated corn syrup, which really helped reduce my sinus issues (though if i eat something new without checking it's 5x worse than in the before time)

  • i tried the paleo spaghetti. it was pretty good.

    AlphaOmega

  • Is that the spaghetti squash? Never tried that. Made a great lasagna with thinly sliced zucchini replacing the noodles.

    HoopheadVII

  • yeah its the spaghetti squash. the big drawback is it is time consuming to prepare the squash(40 minutes in oven). might try microwave next time.

  • Been sticking to it for a month now pretty hardcore.. Minus the 12 beers on Friday and/or Saturday Night and the drunk food after..... Anyways, down 10 pounds from 180 to 170 and have maintained my strength lifting weights too. Also mixing in cardio a few times a week - jogging, interval training and basketball.

  • Just started last week on the advice of Dexterstjacques...

A little background: I think I was a carb addict before. Soda, pasta, pizza, corn chips (so addicting), potatoes, sandwiches of all types, breads. I loved them all. I didn't make too many healthy choices previously, but I also never felt like I was eating all that much. I'd eat 1400 cal/day and not lose weight. Moreover, I had never been someone who was super excited about meats. Sure I enjoyed bacon, steak, etc., but I think most of my dietary choices were made because I was looking for the next carb load.

Upon coming to this realization, paleo seemed like something worth trying. Seems like it's going well so far. I made the mistake of not weighing myself at the beginning, but I've lost 4.5 lbs since Sunday!

I've occasionally felt slightly queasy with mild headaches. I'm sure that I'm still adjusting and that it may take a few weeks. But like others have said, I am hardly ever hungry, and don't really have carb cravings. They're also easier to resist when they're basically not allowed.

I'm not eating much right now, probably ~1500 cal/day (if that), but my body seems to be supplementing that with some significant fat burn.

My plan is to let the body adjust a bit more, get used to this, and maybe ease into working out over the next few weeks. I don't want to bonk out.

Pleased to meet you; hope you guess my name.

I've been crushing the miracle noodles lately. I don't really care if they are made of styrofoam or tapeworm or whatever.

I blame Culvers for the food addictions...

The headaches should go away, usually it's just a withdrawal-type thing, probably caused more by lack of sugar than from lack of carbs.

Well, I mean, that’s what it is. I doodoo and then listen to Katy Perry.

  • So, I'm half-assing a gluten free / paleo diet on a trial basis. I've really only identified the things I'm sure are full of gluten (breads, beer, pasta, etc.) and cut them out, but I've done a fair bit of label reading to make sure I avoid most everything else with it. I'm not in it for the weight loss, but more so for another attempt to cure some issues that may or may not be related to gluten intolerance (mainly dry skin, not celiac).

I'm only about five days in (w/ a slip on Saturday w/ a crab pickin' and PBR feast...can't pick at blue crabs with a gin and tonic) and I'm not really craving any of the things I've cut out. Instead of cereal in the morning, I'm having two eggs and a grapefruit halved. Easy. Lots of fruit and almonds for snacks. Curbs any mid-day cravings fast.

The only issue has been the past two days. Last night in particular....after playing basketball for a couple hours, I wasn't necessarily exhausted, but just felt anemic. So, looking deeper, I guess some people have what amounts to gluten withdrawal symptoms. Anyone here dealt with that and, if so, for how long?

Also, what are some basics or important things to understand for those who have invested themselves into this lifestyle? Are there any important tips to replacing what my body needs or was getting from the products I've eliminated? I'll read the thread more closely, since I'm sure everything is covered there.

  • I agree with whoever said they couldn't give up Oats. Too cheap/delicious. Overall I eat a lot of foods similar to those on this diet though.

    WMTerp12

  • Things I'm not giving up for a true paleo diet....milk, black beans (like above - cheap/delicious/nutritious) and salt (w/in reason).

Im ready for aa 5th of vodica to end my feels.

It's not the gluten, it's the missing carbs. It takes a few weeks to really start making the conversion from being a carb burner to a fat burner. It can really suck at first. A couple hours of basketball is intense and requires glycogen replacement. The hardcore Paleo people would say Sweet Potatoes. They're not big on a lot of fruit. I think a lot may be because many are helping people lose weight and they're anti-sugar. Unless you're fighting being fat, f that. Couple oranges, bananas, etc. Plus there's that added bonus of no insulin spikes during that first hourish after an intense bout of cardio. Milk has a decent amount of sugar too and you still have that with what you're doing.

I tried to go pretty much 100% and it just didn't work for me. I lost too much weight. I added back a lot of dairy. I also do a lot of white rice now too.

It is sometimes referred to as the carb flu. It never hit me, not sure why. If I had to guess, I made sure I was getting at least 50% of my calories from fats very early on.

Taking a multivitamin and fish oil are pretty standard.

The template I'm using is Primal Blueprint from marksdailyapple.com. Once you hit maintenance mode, they recommend an 80/20 approach to clean eating.

  • Thanks...I take Fish Oil, but will have to consider the multi-vitamin. And, like I said, I'm not really in it for the weight loss. I may have to battle with keeping lbs, because it's really easy for me to shed when I want (sorry for those who can't).

  • If you want to maintain, you can up your total calories, and increase fruit and cashews/almonds and fat intake (like coconut milk).

Also, getting a dehydrator to make my own beef jerky is one of the best decisions in my life.

  • Nice...Tracer throws out Mark's Daily Apple at the same time. :)

BTW...I'm probably more Maffetone than Paleo and I started here because of the stuff I do. Too lazy to look back to see if I've posted this book before... 100 pages on just nutrition. He also spends a ton of time talking about fat vs carb burning.

...I used to take multi-vitamins. Stopped when I added all of these veggies and fruits. I take Vitamin D when not in the sun much and Cod Oil.

I did that. Knocked back a whole can the first time I tried. What is that...something like 900 calories of fat. Sat in me like a rock. Ugh! Too much too fast I learned. I hate coconut, but sometimes I force it down mixed with whey protein powder.
