I think durr has a great point is the way it is written short hand for
2*(9+3) which the 288 crowd would have right or is it
[2(9+3)] which the 2 crowd would have it right.

To get 288, you're assuming 48/2(9+3) is the same as (48/2)(9+3). It's not. This problem longhand would look like:

doing parentheses first means you do what is inside the parentheses first. x(y) means x*y. it is multiplication.

And you're assuming 2(9+3) means 48/[2(9+3)] not 48/2*(9+3) in which case durr would be right.
