Would you rather have Yow or Edsall?

  • Let's say you are offered the following: Either keep Debbie Yow in Maryland as the AD, or Randy Edsall as the head coach of Maryland. Who do you want leading your program?

  • Edsall, because with Yow we would have ended up with 2 botched hires instead of one.

  • If Yow is in place James Franklin is now the HC. Not so bad.

But Mark Gottfried would be the basketball coach.

  • Gary would be the basketball coach. He wouldn't have quit if Yow was still in place.

    mrterpfan

  • Our athletics department would be in an even bigger mess.

"It's just so hard," Greivis said. "It's my heart, my love. Maryland made me who I am."

  • Coaching-wise, we'd have Franklin for football and Gary for basketball - no chance he leaves while Yao is still here. However, financially we'd make Greece look great.

    PredaTerp

  • Yow. The coaching change of Franklin for Edsall is $2.5 million off the bat in one year that it cost us (we paid Fridge $2 million buyout plus the difference in Franklin vs. Edsall's contract). Then you have the damage to the football program that Edsall has created.

  • Yow.

At least with her, we don't get to see her stupid bitchface on the sideline every game, smiling her stupid bitchsmile while we're taking it up the ass on the field.

    Turtle Roar

  • Since you didn't specify who the AD would be, I'm taking Edsall. If you have a good AD who doesn't botch contract negotiations, he's easier to fire.

    gocaps1

  • Yow. Anyone but Anderson.

  • Edsall. He only sabotages football, Yow sabotaged both. We'll be able to dig out of the hole Edsall leaves us within 3-4 years, who knows how long it will take us to dig out of the hole Yow dug.

She cut the academic staffs, she's the one who reportedly gave assistants hard times over reimbursement checks, she's the one the assistant FB coaches SUED over not getting raises they thought were due to them, she's the one that paid the women's BB staff more than the men's, she the one that let one of her staff members call out Gary Williams in public and did nothing about it, she's the one who approved the construction of the luxury suites when the consultants she hired told her it wasn't the best idea.

    Should I continue?

  • Nothing illustrates how poorly Edsall is regarded here than the fact that people would even consider the possibility of bringing back the unmitigated disaster that is Debbie Yow rather than have Edsall as our coach.

  • not to get into this, but Yow was here for 16 years. She did fine her first 13 or 14, it was the last two or three that things got out of control. She didn't destroy a football program, she never botched a bowl selection process (she actually performed her best in those negotiations).

This is like saying things "went pear shaped" in Hitler's last few years.

She was clutch for bowl selections, but come on, she gave Ralph that absurd contract, blundered the Comcast naming rights, added sports and spread us thin (WTF water polo), had a toxic relationship with our top revenue HOF coach, paid women's assistants more than MBB, football suites, etc. The list goes on and on.

She was not fine. She was terrible.

Things were fine while she was draining the athletic department's savings account. She put us in the situation where we had to cut sports, she put us in the situation where we had cut the academic staff to a bare bones operation, she put us in a situation where we can't get any money out of Comcast's naming rights for 15 years after they finish paying and she put us in the situation where we have to pay off half empty suites at Byrd.

Edsall sucks. He's stubborn, he's ignorant and he's brash, yet in the end he's a football coach. Debbie Yow has each of those characteristics except she was the athletic director. Unless Yow was a complete moron she had to have seen the iceberg coming and yet she did very little to steer this ship out of the way.

The RF contract came after he was here and had a number of successful seasons and still was less rich than the contract given Edsall.
The only sports she added were water polo and competitive cheer. Both were very cheap sports to operate and added largely so we could give out more men's scholarships (added scholies to baseball and wrestling as a result).
Sorry if she didn't pay Keith Booth top money. When Michael Adams and Rob Moxley were here, they were both on staff together and were in the top 20 highest paid assistants (funny that never gets mentioned). Booth, Ehsan and Driesell didn't get paid well because they came in with very thin resumes.

  • How did she blunder the Comcast naming rights? Comcast and Chevy Chase own respective rights in the building and the floor. Were we supposed to renig on these deals?

    MDTerp84

  • let's state facts. she didn't blunder the contracts, she just used up all the revenues from them over the first few years.

Comcast had to pay X amount of dollars for 10 years and they keep the naming rights for 25 years.

Sound financial decision in my opinion!

she sold them 25 year naming rights, but she knew she would never last past 10 years, so she took the infusion of cash up front to help balance her budget, knowing it would be someone else's problem when the money stopped coming in and comcast would still have their name on the building for 15 more years.
