Where the Hell was he throwing that ball!

  • It's a shame to see Danny's not quite there yet when it comes to making crunch-time plays in the spotlight. However, the 3-3-5 is the perfect defense against what we were trying to run in the first half and we also had a few early drops. Throw in a couple of plays where the receivers were clearly confused as to where they were supposed to be ... and I think his performance was par for the course. The good news is that we learned we also have a running attack and we should be putting up major points on the board all season long.

  • DOB is legit and I am psyched about watching him the rest of this season and the next two. That said he was awful today, and his poor play was enough to turn the result against us. The D was shaky to say the least in the first half, and Chism in the second (WTF learn to tackle).

What I am most upset about, other than the inbred WVU fans sitting in front of me, was that this team came out super flat and not ready to play. That is on Edsall. It seemed like a repeat of recent past WVU games where we get our doors blown off early. Today we chipped away in the second half but the hole WE dug was too deep. I turned the corner on Edsall, and hope he gets it done. Maybe it is some weird mental block with WVU that makes us look like dog shit at the beginning of games with them, but we did not look prepared. I hope it was a one time thing. I am OK losing to a better team (like I expect vs F$U) but no one can tell me we are not equal to or better than that white trash caravan that rolled into CP today. Tough lost.

  • DOB is decent, but nowhere near as great as some people here would like to think... All the first team ACC QB talk, breaking records before his junior year crap needs to take a breather.. The fact that we have had total shit at QB position for the past 8 years is really skewing many of our fans perception.

  • I don't know how you can ever say that any one player single handedly cost us a game. There is enough blame to go around and no one is immune. The defense was pretty bad most of the game, especially the secondary. The receivers were not getting much separation and didn't exactly give Danny a lot of open targets to throw to. Coaches did not do a good job of having the team ready to play today on top of everything else. Play calling on both offense and defense was really bad in the first half.

Yeah Danny was pretty bad. The three picks were extremely costly, but don't forget, we were the beneficiaries of some costly turnovers by WV as well. They could just as easily say they would have blown us out if it weren't for their turnovers.

Danny has to realize that he cannot do it all and has to learn to pull it down and take off when the defense gives his that instead of trying to force it to make a big play.

Hopefully he'll study the films, see the mistakes and correct them. As disappointed as I am -- because we are good enough to win this game -- we still have the chance to have a very good season.

Let's just make sure we don't have a hangover from this next weekend.

I'm almost more concerned that the majority of his passes seemed to be in the dirt than I am the bad decisions. Seemed a number of drives ended because of badly thrown balls to open receivers.

I'm sure having Tyler and McCree gone didn't help. A few times Danny was yelling at Logan because he wasn't running the right route and I'm pretty sure he slowed/stopped on the last play leading to the INT.

Same here. His throws seemed a bit off all day today.

  • I posted this on the premium board as well, but I think DOB is showing a pattern where plays much worse aginst the higher profile teams. Clemson, FSU, Miami last year. One pick this year agains Miami this year, but it was BAD. Seems to lose his sense of decision making and patience against better teams.

He single handily lost this game for the Terps.

LOL, our tackling lost this game for us more than his play did. Yes, played poorly, but go back and look at WVU's last drive that ended in the FG. Perfect summary of the game as a whole for the D.

1st down, LB has clear shot at Smith and misses him. Could have been 2nd and 15-18 but Smith completes 6 yard pass to make it 2nd and 4.

3rd down, CB misses tackle on Bailey that would have been short of 1st down and he runs down the sidelline for 21 yard gain

  • Edsall had it exactly right in his post game presser - Danny's not perfect and he's never going to be but he's a good kid and a hard worker. The expectations from some of you are ridiculous. He had a terrible game, give the guy a break. He's won a lot more for us than he's lost. I have no doubt that he's going to bust his ass to do better next week.

...Every time you come out flat it is on you, no one else. This is as far as 97% of these guys are going to get in football, you only have so many opportunitues, by definition. Part of it could even be attached to our late arriving crowd.

I doubt any coach left something uncovered over the last two weeks...and then discvered in the 3rd period, oh hey, let's get the team psyched and run the plays that will score 3 touchdowns this period.

The players are those who should get both the praise and criticism, not just the praise when things go well.

However, the players are human, and who knows what they were thinking they would be facing. One thing is for sure, our tackling is still at a 10th grade level. If they just moved into position w/their legs/feet (read as hustle and stay after it), rather than reaching, then the game would have been different.

My 2c worth. Why give a pretty good QB time to pick out a receiver ? Take a lesson from the Ryan family (Buddy, Rex, and the Ryan) and put some heat on him. When you have to make quick decisions, they aren't always the best ones.

  • Danny was definitely off but he certainly wasn't the only reason we lost. And for those of you saying we've overrated him, he's played 2 games as a Soph and Boomer himself says he expects DOD will leave MD as the best QB to ever play here.

Franklin 15 tackles, Robinson 13. When you're two leading tacklers are your safeties, there are a lot more problems than the QB. Defense gave up too many big plays, didn't get stops on 3rd down and had critical penalties.

And to the OP, a missed FG as something to criticize? It was 48 yards and he had the leg...

  • Anyone else feel the play calling in the first half was too conservative? Maybe Edsall/Crowton saw something in Danny early on that they didnt like, but I don't feel like it was the same attack we had vs Miami. We saw him open it up more with quick screens and such in the second half.

  • What did ya think of those two bullshit unnecessary roughness calls against WVU when it was obvious textbook tackling? They got jacked up!!

Second was a little questionable because the receiver was sliding to the ground, but the first was completely legit. You cannot lead with your helmet and hit the other guy in the helmet. Period.

  • The turnovers made Maryland play calling turn scared/conservative. Glad they opened it back up in the second half.

...about the same thing I thought of the PI call on your third and long in the first quarter when Smith threw the ball to Adelphi.

Seriously, I haven't seen anyone here b*tching about the zebras yesterday. I thought they called a good game, and the replays made them look better than the naked eye did.

  • Any way you cut it, DOB lost this game. Geno Smith outplayed him and out thought him on the field. WVU had 480 yards of total offense to our 477. Geno threw for 388 to DOB's 289 and the 3 picks not only led to points but to more possessions for WVU and more defensive plays for our defenders. We still had an amazing comeback, but we lost the frickin' game.

I thought DOB was a better QB from the neck up than Geno, and I was wrong. I thought DOB made bad decisions on every one of those 3 picks, and he dug the hole that the team had to climb out of. The last int was no worse than the first two in terms of his decision to throw it where he did and in the last case the decision just to run it and take his chances on 4th down if he didn't make it was the intelligent play. DOB has a tendency to fall in love with his arm, and that has to change.

DOB has to be just sick with himself, but that goes with the territory. He is still only a sophomore, but he has to win the big games. Temple now becomes a big game fwiw. Get by Towson, and then we hit murderers' row. So here's hoping he does better, but I think he accepts his responsibility for this loss. His teammates did him proud getting him back in the game, and now he has to learn how to finish.

I think I was too busy laughing at your kicker who was almost short on two 30 yard FG's to notice the officials.

Chill the F out. He's a soph, he's going to make mistakes. Didnt have his best game but hes still better than anything weve had yhe last 10 yrs. Some of this has got to be on the D.

My thoughts exactly. Relax folks, he is still young and learning. He is also the best QB we've had in a long long time and will win way more games for us than he will cost us.

  • Had a bad game but WVU had 24 points off scoring drives of 88, 67, 78, and 65 yards. One pick was returned for a TD, and that's on DOB. They capitalized on one on that one interception but had three touchdowns on legit-ass drives. That's on the D.

Is danny afraid to run? how many times has he had a nice running cushion and chose to knife the pass in for a INT?

Twice in the first two games, but that's enough for people to label him as afraid to run. He ran for 49 against Miami (37 net after tfl).

I do think DOB is afraid to run at all. When he does, he never seems to show any signs of hesitancy. I think right now he has the problem of thinking his arm alone can save the day. And that,in by itself, is a coachable solution.

He is just a sophmore. He is far from perfect and I am sure he would be the first to agreed to that statement.
