Today, I found love

20 yrs ago. Different times, differently viewed. Not going to say more because the thread is off track.

The thread has gone as far as it can on the original track. Turgeon is awesome, firey, and competitive. Outside of JoeBlack, Klip, and mattyroe nobody is going to come in here and debate that, thus the thread has moved into other debatable topics.

The same people did the same thing when Bino was kept over Rob initially. There was even some poster on TT who literally only showed up for that couple week period to pump up Rob and trash Bino, then was gone after Bino was brought back.

Nope. Love bino. Always have. I think he and hill are very different. There are threads on premium that you will find me arguing with dat about how highly I think of bino vs hill.

I'm a garyanna. Show me where I said anything negative about turg's recruiting?

You disapprove of the Hill hiring, which represents a different policy in recruiting than that of Gary.

  • Just out of curiosity - who are the bigtime studs outside of Beasely that Hill has even landed?

He did get Judge - who transferred out, but according to Scout his recruiting classes were:

    2011: 4 3 stars and a 2 star
    2010: 2 3 stars and a 2 star
    2009: 1 5 star (Judge), 2 3 stars and 5 2 stars
    2008: 2 3 stars and 2 2 stars
2007: 2 5 (the Beasley and Walker year) stars and a 4 star

So, since 2007 his claim to fame is recruiting Wally Judge?

  • Recruiting DMV kids to Kansas State /= recruiting DMV kids to Maryland.

This is the equivalent of looking at Mike Locksley and saying, "So outside of Arrelious Benn, all he got was Reggie Ellis?"

I knew the impact of the hill hiring on Anderson. I also felt it was unnecessary. That said, I have said nothing since. I didn't like the Seth Allen offer either (nothing to do with hill) but turg knows a he'll of a lot more than me, so I'm waiting to see.

If you want to apply the transitive property so it fits your arguement, go ahead. Turg is recruiting his guys. I am behind that, just like I was behind Gary when he recruited his guys.

Comon. Locks did it here, at ill and at nm. Hill hasn't made it rain yet. There is still time but something needs to show this summer. Bino has shown his abilities, both for Gary and for turg. And bino can coach.

  • Getting back to the topic, one of the things that impressed me greatly this season with Turgeon is his desire and will with this year's team. It would have been relatively easy for him to have not had the focus he did on this year's team as he looked to build for 2013, 2014 and beyond, but to his credit, he really delivered the goods coaching-wise this season. Given the team's limitations in talent and with no Len to start the season, and no Howard for a majority of the season, the team was maybe two OT ACC losses away from being on the edge of the NCAA tourney bubble. It's hard to imagine any coach that would have gotten much more out of this year's team so Turgeon should be given credit for a very solid job.

The familiarity he has gained this season with the players on the team and the conference will help him greatly going in to next year when he should have a better talent base to work with.

Because the OWG FOG types had rallied around Gary's anti-AAU stance and held Dalonte Hill as the evil face of the AAU movement that ruined the sanctity of college basketball.

Do you really need to be a jackass? I'm growing pretty tired of hearing idiots blame everything on "old white guys". You'd be the first one screaming if someone singled out any ethnic group, other age group, etc.. If you don't want it done to you, don't do it to other people. It's pretty simply, really.

I'm 51 and white, and I haven't formed an opinion on Hill yet. I'll let his level of success determine my opinion. However, the fact that someone has had shadiness surrounding them to some extent for a good while is pretty much independent of my skin color and my age.

    Agreed on all points.

I just think at the end of the day in recruiting there's a sit down and an asking price. If you don't arrange for the asking price to be met, all your ins and connections are only so good. I'm fine with Dalonte being the broker to get the doors open for Turge and lay down the landscape for his first 2 summers here. It's important. I'm just not bought in that we're landing studs.

Pretty sure Jones and Pope were commits for about two weeks each.

We had jones for a short time although he never announced it publically. I heard first hand from Ross that he and jones were coming to Maryland. Unfortunately, Nike got wind that md was going to take jones and they squashed us there pretty quick and then f$@ked us with Ross too.

Is anybody buying Jones committed to UMD? This seems like horrible revisionist history.

This must've been very early in the process, because Jones basically stopped talking about us in the late summer/fall before he signed late in the spring period.

  • Why is this a Gary vs. Turg type thing? Gary is a HOF coach who won a NC here. He retired and we are moving on.

That said, if someone criticizes the hiring of Hill that does not have to come from a pro Gary place. There are many people/schools in this country that would not touch this guy with a ten foot poll. It is too early to know if we did the right thing with hiring HIll. Hell it is too early to know if we have the right head coach. We went 6-10 in a crap ACC. I love that Turg seems to have that chip on his shoulder that I think you need at Maryland, but we also need talent. Time will tell......

  • Gary went here. It didn't catch me off guard with him. In what was essentially a meaningless game for the Terps and a very meaningful game for UVA, turg showed what he is about. I'm all in.

    This sums it for me.

  • ummm, Devils is dominating this thread. Dalonte is overpaid, but he's regarded well in the industry. Those that think otherwise are hating. When you have a coach like Turgeon that values evaluation, does it personally, and has always leaned on Spinner, there is a learning curve. Both Bino & Hill need a minute to understand Turgeon & what he wants/needs. You see it all the time, even on previous staffs. Look how crappy Patsos was at getting Gary's type of players as opposed to Hahn. Right now, Spinner is Hahn & the other guys are finding their way. In the meantime, Bino will keep us in the hunt for Bmore kids, and Hill has us in the running for Peters, Etou, Bullock etc.

As for Ehsan, I killed that kid around here, when the rest were offering reach-arounds. I've told this story on premium, but SMU was recruiting against Ehsan for a prominent big this past cycle. Ehsan did an awful job, didn't pinpoint the kids priorities and what he wanted in a school etc. Furthermore, I had the 'opportunity' to defile Ehsan at the SMU hoops tailgate, during this kids OV, and I crushed his soul. When the kid committed to SMU, Ehsan acted shocked and butthurt. He preceeded to then talk smack about an unofficial visit the kid took to SMU, even wanted to know the accounting on it, until he was told Va Tech didn't even finish second. They finished behind Vandy as well. He's green as they come, people.

We backed off Jones midway through the process because he is a bizarre personality and would never nail down a time when he was visiting here. We weren't even in his final group. Herb "Free Dro" Pope's recruitment was similar to Born Ready, they could've had him if they wanted him I think, but chose to back off because of the issues associated with him.

Terrence Jennings is the one who was committed here and only lasted a couple weeks before he decommitted for Louisville.

it was Terrance Jennings I was thinking of, my bad

    goterpss

  • If anything, after years of the absurdity of our women's assistants making more than our men's, I'm glad Dalonte is overpaid. Hopefully that signals that when he leaves in a few years, we're going to be paying big money to attract a top flight assistant from somewhere else.

    Devils0720

  • Yikes at being called old. All I said was Turge made a few early mistakes, I still think the jury is out on Dalonte. But Turge is our guy, that much is in.

As for Rob, he isn't just a recruiter. He's a great in-game assistant (Gary relied on him almost 100% the last two years...I know I know with Booth, Bino, Troy and Ski it wasn't exactly the seven wonders of the coaching world). He relates to kids really well and is a very good up and coming talent scout. It's not really fair just to compare him to other pure recruiters.

  • FWIW, most of the old guard (if not all) are in Turge's camp. He had no problem raising $3 million in a nano second in the fall, from the old guard.
