  • When I was there (06-08) we had a guy play in Alaska for the summer and loved it. They played all hours because there was only a couple hours a day when the sun wasn't up. I went down after my junior year and played Coastal Plains in Martinsville - ton of games makes for a really long summer, but it was awesome not having to worry about anything but pllaying baseball and being surrounded by BBQ at every away game.

Hockaday would be a nice keep for the Terps. He passed Mark Teixeira's state HR record. Playing at the tiny Shipley should make things interesting.

  • did any of these guys sign?

    rdez79

  • Doesn't look like it.

  • Northwoods is going to be a great environment for Beck and Rodriguez. I broadcasted there a couple summers ago, and they have some legit prospects come through the league.

    theaman

  • I read that Beck was not offered a contract - an offer will only come after he finishes summer ball with Youse's Orioles in the Ripken league.

Potter got like $1500 signing bonus...ridiculously low IMO

    7erps

  • Senior sign. Potter doesn't have much, if any, leverage. Usually they just get a grand.

Yeah I get the leverage part, but I knew throwaway guys that got drafted by the O's after college just because they played for Dean Albany and the Orioleanders, and they still got ~$5k. And those were 30s/40s rounders.

I know of a CHC kid who got a nice bonus at the backend of the draft because he was a family friend of Angelos. Maybe the same thing for these kids?

Sucks for Potter but I'm not shocked by it, especially from an organization that has to pinch pennies like Oakland.

Yeah I would imagine very similar situations - most of them played 2-3 years in Bluefield and hung it up. It does suck for Potter, but it's all relative considering his first job is a professional ball player.

We had a guy (Ryan Moorer) when I was at UMD that was drafted by the Cubs out of HS and offered $250k, but he passed and came to MD. After his junior year he went to the Mariners like 15 rounds later for $25k. I doubt he felt his 3 years at UMD we worth that $225k

  • so Beck is in the Ripken League this summer not northwoods?

    Ripken
    Aces - Boyden,Richards, Olenski, Bruker(HS)
    Express - Schneider
Youses - Beck, Kilboure, Bouey (HS), Ruse (HS) Hockaday (HS)

According to our local newspaper in Anne Arundel County. I would imagine it became a stipulation of his selection so they could monitor him locally vs. tracking him down in N'Woods. theaman is right, we have a few guys play in Madison and loved it.

  • Eric Potter had a nice 1st pro outing in the AZL league 2.1 IP 2H 6 K's

    rdez79

  • Potter update

Potter has a 17/3 K/BB in 11 innings. Has a 1.64 ERA and a 0.93 FIP. Hasn't allowed any homers and has a .381 BABIP. He's old for the league, but those are ridiculous numbers. Good for him.

Rodriguez, Beck, and Marquis haven't signed.

Suprised about Mooney. Played against him when he was a sophomore and I was a senior. No doubt he has gotten better but he was pretty average for a highschool player even when we faced him.

    RedandWhite

  • Eric Potter was promoted to short season A ball recently. Finished rookie league ball with a 0.70 FIP and 22 strikeouts in 14 innings.

  • Price is from my neck of the woods, good for him

The USC baseball team has landed a commitment from INF George Iskendarian (6-2 190) of Englewood Cliffs, NJ. Iskendarian attends Don Boscoe Prep. He is considered a national level recruit for the 2012 class and a player who could be a very early pick in next summer's draft. He had originally committed to Maryland.

  • According to his twitter account, Kevin Hockaday will not sign with the Orioles and will attend Maryland.

  • 2012 P/1B Brandon Casas from Gilman (Baltimore) just verballed yesterday. Ryan Ripken, also from Gilman, may be next. It would be interesting to bring Cal into the fold.

Saw that also, he's got a chance to put up some silly numbers at home.
