Ten Years Ago

Ten years ago this week I had my room booked at the Fountain Bleu, a rt ticket to miami (really fort lauderdale) and tickets to an Orange Bowl to see my University play.

That entire season was magical, and ended with what can be described as one awesome party on South Beach. No matter where we went that week, we saw people in red. At some of south beach's famous spots, a random Let's Go Maryland chant broke out. Then walking into Joe Robbie (pro player i think then) Stadium and seeing all that red gave me goosebumps. It didn't matter we got our butt kicked, I walked out of that stadium with hope as a Maryland football fan.

Now it might not be fair to compare when Fridge came in with Edsall, but it's hard not too. Whatever problems we had last year, we still had a football team that won 9 games and knew how to win. At an early terrapin club event with Friedgen he was standing up and talking and said.....you won't see the same system we had at GT because we have different players. Charlie and Gary will put the current players in the best position to win. He put a great staff in place, and our players left the field at NC state that year with Oranges in hand. Now we know as the years went on some things soured with Ralph, and many here are no fans of his. However I will never forget that first year, and the pride he gave us to root for Maryland.

That staff ten years ago boosted up the players and made them believe they can win, our staff now called the current players worthless and hopeless. You see the difference in results. Now I am sure when Edsall gets more of his own players, he will prop them up more....but his worst offense to me is trashing a lot of good kids who wanted to and chose to be Terps. They are something he will never be, A TERRAPIN.

From the Orange Bowl to the Smurf Bowl and then the Military Bowl. What in the world happened to us?

the "pin route"....the best part was after the TD we threw Oranges all over the field at NC State.......I thought their fans were literally going to start shooting at us.

To this day, I've never heard a stadium go from being that loud to that silent in one second. It was like all the air got sucked out of the place. I didn't feel threatened at all where I was sitting. The NC State fans just kind of shrugged and left while we were going nuts.

  • That was a great year. It rained like hell all day in Miami - we got soaked at the tailgate, then stopped before game time. Got bombed by Florida, but still had a great time. MD ended 13th in AP rankings. Bball team ended ranked 4th. Last rankings were published before they won NC.

After game, left Miami for four days in the Keys.

They had that winter storm right after New Years, I remember. We drove up 95 and my gf made me stop driving for the night because the other people on the road didn't understand how to drive when you have a snow dusting (slam brakes + cut wheel on ice = bad). We stayed the night in Georgia and ended up getting stuck for hours on 95 the next day because some tractor trailer full of tomatoes flipped over. Did anybody else get stuck in that mess?

Anyway, what a great, great year. Orange Bowl + Natty. Those of us in school at the time couldn't have been more lucky.

My plane was stuck on the tarmac in Atlanta for hours and nearly canceled after numerous deicings. I arrived at the game shortly before kick off.

  • I was there as well. Because of other commitments, I wasn't able to make it down for New Years Eve. The wife and I drove to JAX and stayed at the Ritz-Carlton at Amelia Island. Fun party, but nowhere near what South Beach would have been. The Noles and Hokies were in the Gator Bowl that year and several of their fans were at our hotel. New Years Day morning we had breakfast and got ready to head to Miami. Everyone at breakfast had FSU or VT gear on. I was sporting my Terps gear and loving it!

The day of game was lousy, weather wise. I remember going to the pre-game tailgate next to the stadium in the rain. But it let up in time and by the time the Maryland band got there, everyone was loud and going crazy.

Even though we got our butts kicked by Spurrier and Grossman, it was still a great, great time.

Then, soon afterwards, there was that Final Four thing in Atlanta I got to go to as well......

It was certainly a magical time for us Terp fans. We were arguably the best one-two punch in the Nation that year.

** Edited to say, other than the outcome, I remember how crappy the halftime show was... Li'l Bow Wow....please.

  • My friend and I slept in Cole to get tix, then took a 30 hr Greyhound from NYC to Miami. Our hotel was in Hialeah (student budget FTL). It rained during tailgating. And Terps were everywhere. Damn what a great trip :missyoumdfootball:

My buddy's frat brother was the Gators' videographer. I'll never forget rolling into the UF team hotel past maseratis and lambos to see the players milling about and then the cheerleaders dressed up to go out on SoBe. We raided the minibar on UF's dime too.

  • Can't believe nobody has mentioned the overturned produce truck on I-95 on the way home. NOthing like adding a 4 hour wait in traffic to the drive back from Miami!

  • What an amazing season. I remember they went all out for the band that year too; the only games I didn't go to in person were the Wake and FSU games. They put us up in Miami for like 4 days and they chartered a plane for us and the cheerleaders. South Beach on New Years was pretty awesome too.

  • Oh yeah and both of our revenue teams that year went undefeated at home and lost 6 games COMBINED.

  • I just threw out all my vcr tapes of games from that year. Should have saved them for next fall.

  • Damn, these memories give me tears. NYE in South Beach was kick ass. We set up our tailgate before noon, I think so early there was no one there to tell us we couldn't yet. Thank God we had the double wide tent during the rainstorm. I remember chanting "Can't make curfew" at all the Gator fans that would walk by. I recall being slowed in NC for quite a while on the drive home, but can't remember what day it was (the 3rd or 4th). Now I will just sit home and continue to stew over our predicament especially now that Leach is off the market. F U KA and everyone else responsible for this sh*t.

  • definitely some great memories...flew in from st. louis for the game, stayed at the mandarin oriental on brickell. south beach was a blast - clevelander's and some other places were packed with terp fans. went to the tailgate at the horse track, which felt like a 25 mile walk to the stadium. jafar williams long td catch was one of the few highlights, but good times nonetheless.
