Ten Years Ago

  • Ten years ago this week I had my room booked at the Fountain Bleu, a rt ticket to miami (really fort lauderdale) and tickets to an Orange Bowl to see my University play.

That entire season was magical, and ended with what can be described as one awesome party on South Beach. No matter where we went that week, we saw people in red. At some of south beach's famous spots, a random Let's Go Maryland chant broke out. Then walking into Joe Robbie (pro player i think then) Stadium and seeing all that red gave me goosebumps. It didn't matter we got our butt kicked, I walked out of that stadium with hope as a Maryland football fan.

Now it might not be fair to compare when Fridge came in with Edsall, but it's hard not too. Whatever problems we had last year, we still had a football team that won 9 games and knew how to win. At an early terrapin club event with Friedgen he was standing up and talking and said.....you won't see the same system we had at GT because we have different players. Charlie and Gary will put the current players in the best position to win. He put a great staff in place, and our players left the field at NC state that year with Oranges in hand. Now we know as the years went on some things soured with Ralph, and many here are no fans of his. However I will never forget that first year, and the pride he gave us to root for Maryland.

That staff ten years ago boosted up the players and made them believe they can win, our staff now called the current players worthless and hopeless. You see the difference in results. Now I am sure when Edsall gets more of his own players, he will prop them up more....but his worst offense to me is trashing a lot of good kids who wanted to and chose to be Terps. They are something he will never be, A TERRAPIN.

  • I was there too, south beach on new yrs eve ftw, I couldn't believe how much we outnumbered the Florida fans wherever we went. Md fans took over south beach.

  • Don't forget (duh, I know no one will) Terp basketball was pretty good a decade ago as well! A magical time to be a Terp...

Man when was the last time we had a six next to our name in football (it would be that game unless somehow we were ranked 16 at some point in which case that would technically be the answer).

  • Ralph use to do so many things from that formation. It was awesome!

  • That was a great, great time to be a Terp fan. I was at the NC State game and the Orange Bowl. I remember Shaun Hill finding Giulian Gary for the win like it was yesterday.

the "pin route"....the best part was after the TD we threw Oranges all over the field at NC State.......I thought their fans were literally going to start shooting at us.

  • I was a Sophomore.

5 of us suite-mates from Calvert Hall on South Campus drove all the way down for a long weekend. We underage drank and stumbled through every bar we could get into in South Beach for New Years.

It still stands as one of the best memories I had while at MD.

    An unforgettable experience.

  • What a great time to be a Terp in South Beach. I'll never forget all the parties.

  • Took my, then 7 yr old, son to that. Was an awesome time until a certain suspended QB came into the game. How come he didn't throw a ton of picks like he does now? The thing my son brings up first when I ask him what he remembers? Spending the night in the airport on the way home.

  • Being a Terp from 2000 - 2004 was about as good as I could have dreamed. I feel so bad for the students on campus now. They don't know what it's like to expect to win and succeed.

They had that winter storm right after New Years, I remember. We drove up 95 and my gf made me stop driving for the night because the other people on the road didn't understand how to drive when you have a snow dusting (slam brakes + cut wheel on ice = bad). We stayed the night in Georgia and ended up getting stuck for hours on 95 the next day because some tractor trailer full of tomatoes flipped over. Did anybody else get stuck in that mess?

Anyway, what a great, great year. Orange Bowl + Natty. Those of us in school at the time couldn't have been more lucky.

Yep we made it through that mess of a storm. We had 8 ppl packed into an old old minivan, it was like a tank, the amount of weight we put on it, which prob helped the minivan from skidding. My friend also drove through the night, he was amazing. I even fell asleep and when we woke up, we were back in CP.

We also got pulled over in GA on the back for speeding. The cops even made us all get out of the car because their search dog smelled something in the car.

  • Had a blast down there at the game, except for the torrential downpour in the parking lot with absolutely zero protection from the rain and wind. I still can't believe we didn't get that interception return converted to a TD down on the goal line (plus Rex Grossman returning in the 2nd half didn't help either.) Tough to top a BCS game and a basketball national championship in a freshman year.

Plus watching 45,000+ Gator fans do the Gator Chop was pretty badass

  • Good times. Had an absolute blast spending time in South Beach and then filling the trunk of the rental car full of ice (thank you full waiver) for some great tailgating fun. Somehow we ended up w/ a bunch of tap handles from the stadium. Good times indeed.

That season, we ran alot of wing-T based offense and some stuff that looked like flex-bone....why did we never do it again? I don't ever remember being in that double wing or flexbone formation after that season. Why did we change what we were doing? Just curious.

  • We started tailgating in the parking lot at the Orange Bowl at noon. I was so hammered by the time the game started I didn't notice that a friend had finger painted a "6" and a "9" on my cheeks instead of an "M" and "D".

It's a good thing I don't remember the second half at all. The only thing I remember is that awesome Jafar Williams TD. I still wonder why they went away from that double wing option offense.

  • I got so drunk on NYE on South Beach that I made my GF leave with me at about 12:15, then proceeded to tip our cabbie double the fare (thinking it made me look big time) then threw up all over her uncle's guest bedroom.

  • Another favorite memory was a piss-drunk Baltimoron from Dundalk (guessing) who was wearing an old faded Ray Lewis caricature t-shirt absolutely drop (one shot, bro) an equally rednecked Florida fan in a concession line during the 2nd half.

Dude. I'll never forget the sight of the tomatoes on 95 in the middle of North Carolina. It's funny now.

South Carolina was way worse though. They had maybe an inch of snow, and by the morning when we were driving through the roads were cleared and it was about 45 degrees, and yet 90% of the people on the road were driving about 35 mph and there were 10-12 cars "stranded" on the side of the road.
