Pearl looks a little bit like Anthony Bourdain

Exactly. I didn't say "spitting image of"

  • $100 says that he ends up in C-USA within 5 years. The place where shady power conference flameouts go to die.

  • What are the chances ESPN hires him?

  • Too bad he ran astray - I think he is a decent coach, good recruiter, and probably a lot of fun to have a beer with.

    If it's up to Dickie V, 0%.

  • I never really liked the guy, so I don't feel to bad that he was fired.
Also, it'll be interesting to see if/how this affects Jim Tressel's ethics issues

Have to believe this is it for Bruce Peal in terms of coaching college ball. I think it's very good odds he gets slapped with a show cause order.

his coaching career is dependent upon this alone.

on one hand, the actual violation is pretty minor. had he admitted to it originally, this thing would probably be over, and Pearl would still have his job (imo).

on the other hand, the cover up was pretty widespread, and involved not only his assistant coaches, but his players, and the prospective recruits as well.

and yeah, there is this additional tidbit where he dropped a dime on Illinois years ago (when still at Iowa), and basically ruined the Illini assistant's career.

I agree jsh; I don't think it looks too good for Bruce Pearl at all.

But, it's the NCAA, and who knows what retarded logic they will apply to this case.

Stoglin, Pe'shon Faust, Gibbs Parker, Anderson, Hawk Tobias, Breunig, Padge Williams, Cleare

Do you really think Parker will make a big enough jump to be a starter? I'd love to see it, but he played so little this year that it was hard to gauge how soon he might be able to be a major contributor.

So are you saying he may become the Jordan Steffy of basketball?

  • I think Gary should slow play THarris and wait on JOB to head north.

No, I don't. I generally don't even think about him when I think about the future. But I knew annoying people would complain if I didn't have him starting.

  • It was already known that he committed violations shortly after that press conference where he cried and everything, now Andy Katz said he even committed violations this month.

I wonder what caliber of coach will end up going for the UT job if the potential violations UT is in for are steep. They are already going to lose Tobias Harris and maybe Scottie Hopson to the NBA draft. They also had a few seniors who played some big minutes. Both of their commits already asked to be released from their LOI, so their roster could be gutted.

    ESPNAndyKatz Andy Katz
Tennessee issues official statement on Pearl firing. The Sept violation is the bump. The March 2011 violation? Notsaid. Pearl gets $948,728.

  • Andy Katz was on ESPN saying Bruce Pearl could get the SHOW CLAUSE put on him which may prevent him from coaching again in college for up to 10 years!!! I know Todd Bozeman got that slapped on him and Kelvin Sampson may have too. If he gets the Show Clause put on him, I'm sure he'll get a TV job at ESPN or become an NBA assistant like K.Sampson has done. B.Pearl comes across as a Professional Brown Noser, I'm sure there are several NBA people he has brown-nosed who would give him some sort of assistant job.

  • I don't think there are a lot of coaches willing to extend their hand to Pearl. He's a whistle blower and that got him blackballed from Division 1 for a long time. I don't see anyway ESPN hires Pearl considering one of their biggest personalities (Vitale) seems to hate him and the fact that at any point discussion of violations comes up ESPN and Pearl would be put in awkward situations.

He may end up in the NBA like Sampson, who also received a show cause, but I feel pretty confident in saying Pearl's Division 1 career is over.

What's the hate from Vitale to Pearl?

    Attitude Reflects Leadership

    jps11673

  • The funny thing is Dick Vitale was praising Bruce Pearl yesterday!! The hate from D.Vitale to B.Pearl goes back to the late 1980's when B.Pearl(who was an assistant at a Big Ten School maybe Iowa) SNITCHED on Illinois for illegally recruiting a highly touted player from Chicago. B.Pearl actually taped a phone conversation with that recruit(Deon Thomas??) and got Illinois into trouble. B.Pearl was soon blackballed from D-1 for many years for doing that. B.Pearl and the Illinois assistant he snitched on ended up coaching in the same conference years later. That assistant NEVER shook B.Pearl's hand after games. B.Pearl was coaching Wisconsin-Milwaukee and the former Illinois assistant was coaching Illinois-Chicago. D.Vitale actually bashed B.Pearl on ESPN for doing that. It appears as if D.Vitale is no longer upset at B.Pearl.

If Bruce Pearl doesn't get the Show Clause slapped on him, he'll definitely end up in C-USA with the other disgraced high D-1 coaches like a poster wrote. I know Larry Eustachy, Tom Penders and Tim Floyd ended up/ are still coaching in C-USA. I maybe leaving out some others

    Thomas CK44197

  • Looks like I misspoke about the hate. Vitale's recent column says he likes Pearl, but I believe Vitale roasted him when he turned in Jimmy Collins back in the late 80's and there's always been a vibe that Vitale isn't the biggest fan.

Still don't think Pearl would get a job at ESPN. He brings a lot of baggage with him.

The cover-up for the recruiting violations was bad enough, but the additional violations since then (apparently including one this month), even if small, will likely put this over the top. He seems like a crack addict when it comes to ignoring the recruiting rules.
