SI: Mark Turgeon at Fault for Terrapins NIT Fate

  • hotlantaterp said...

Stoglin was a selfish motherfucker who was a cancer. End of story man.

Stoglin was a extremely talented college player who had many off the court issues. He was the best player Turge has ever coached and was one fo the best scorers in the country. Turge and Stoglin unfortunately did not mesh. Stoglins off the court issues eventually took over, no way to tell if coached differently there would have been a different result. Those are all facts.

I disagree with people who believe Turge could have no way stopped the inevitable trainwreck that was Stogs leaving. Turge had substantial influence over Stoglin during this time period, the relationship they had most likely didn't help the situation. Coaches can have a significant impact on players decisions. To say Turge is solely responsible for Stogs is leaving is complete BS, to say that there is nothing different Turge could have done to make the situation better is BS. People who argue this team isn't a tourney team with Stogs are completely clueless.

How are we better than last year. If we lose to UVA, that gives us 10 losses. The ACC is weaker this year.

Also, my answer to your question was that coaching was/is part of the reason.

    Just stop being ridiculous.

Last season, we only played 16 conference games, finishing 6-10 for a .375 winning percentage. Even if we lose Sunday, we're 8-10, which is better in my book. If we win, we're .500, which is a hell of a lot better.

    Funny you bring up Cal.

Here are his comments after losing to UGA last night:

"I am so disappointed in the job I've done with this team," Calipari said. "I've never had a team not cohesive this time of year. ... Every one of them had a will to win. Every one of them had a fight. Well, if this team doesn't have that, that's on me. What the heck did I do?"

    Turge Comments after UNC:

“We really didn’t have a low-post game. They doubled the post. We got good looks; we have to knock them down. The first play of the game we made a bad decision. We had Logan [Aronhalt] open for three and Dez [Wells] turned the ball over trying to do something. Probably a few too many threes. We were right on the break, and Nick [Faust] instead of going in for a layup pulled up for three, which makes no sense to me. I have to keep coaching them the best I can. Carolina had to be good and they were really good, especially Bullock.”

How about Calipari's comments after UK got smacked by Tennessee??? After the game, Calipari said his players were "not real coachable" and had their "worst practice in four years" on Friday. He harshly criticized his players for their lack of drive...

  • Dez wells does play like a role player and on a good team would be a role player. No idea why you think he has star potential with his lack of a consistent j and shaky handle. Shows me you dont know much about hoops. That is why i have to keep on you.

And yes since I define mediocre as just being able to make the tourney I would be ecstatic to even be mediocre with your hoops messiah at the helm '08. Keep drinking that koolaid with a patch of white in it. Maybe some day if you keep the optimism up he'll even let you taste the real thing.

Most of the excuses for the teams struggles are 100% legit and anyone calling for heads is absolutely jumping the gun. In a vacuum, they all make perfect sense. Where they start to break down is when you look at the individual games, games against teams just as flawed, if not more. This is also the worst fundamental team i have ever seen in my over 30+ years of watching maryland basketball, by far. Unforced errors are going to keep this team out of the dance and there has been precious little improvement throughout the season. Some of that has to reflect on the coach. Bottom line, it is too early to judge but it is hard to like what you see on the court.

I agree with this. I have doubt about Turgeon, but this must play out more.
However, some of this is on the players. I remember one post saying Len was not being coached and not taught the low post moves. He has shown many low post moves, but my key question regarding Len is does he have passion for game. He is hard to gauge because he has only been in USA 1.5 years.
I am very concerned about next year, Shaq will be undersized 5, I think he is about 6'7".5 and no point guard.
There are too many of same type players to get a set rotation
    Combos
    Seth Allen, Roddy Peters
Wings who are playing pg, Faust and Wells.
    next year I start
    1. Peters at pg, hoping he can leapfrog Allen who in my opionion does not want to play pg. This is just a desparartion guess, because our pg play has been awful.
    2. Wells at 2 or 3, you must get Wells on the wings where he thrives on transition and dribble penetrattion, he shoots better than Faust.
    3. Layman, he is a legit 3 who has shown he can shoot (in bad slump now) and can drive and pass, must improve defense,
    4. Mitchell, He looks out of shape somewhat, but I like his overall game, I think he is frustated
    5. Shaq, He needs to lose some weight, but should be our 5 next year

    6. Evan S, transfer from Michigan, is starting candidate or 6th man as stretch 4, will be an impact player next year.
    7. Faust, starting candidate and it is hard to see Turgeon not starting Faust, he must improve his decison making, shot and defense, My issue is that Wells and Faust are playing same position.

    8. Seth Allen , could start is he develops his point guard skills., has great athletic skills, but does not play hard enough and no defense,

    JLK33

  • I kind of disagree with the notion that this staff has not developed the big men. Sure Len is frustrating but the difference between last year and this is night and day. As we keep hearing the term lottery we sometimes forget just how raw this guy was when he stepped on campus. I also look at the project that Shaq appeared to be as he threw up awkward bricks against South Carolina State. Again still a ways to go but he has shown vast improvement since December.

It's too early to bury Turgeon, but I really don't know how anybody can defend his job performance this year. We haven't improved at all since the new year.

And I've already started to worry.

I am with this. I like the majority of things about Turgeon and obviously want to him to succeed, but lets face it: 2013 is a bag of dicks ACC and a total shitpile of a bubble. I did not expect some type of Final 4 run but not making the dance or finishing slightly above .500 with the average at best surrondings is supremely disappointing.

They were a turd sandwich with Stoglin! IMO MT biggest issue was believing PH and SA could run the team. This was a MAJOR mistake on his part!

You do realize the current crop was his first recruiting class, he had not real roots established and that one of the guards he wanted to bring in was not admitted? We had a PG problem (among 4 others), the day he set foot on campus, but sure let's expect the man to fix all the problems and start a class of freshmen and sophmores and win the ACC and Natty!

SCJ would likely have helped our shooting/scoring deficit more than our PG deficit. That said, point made.

Yes and I am not down on MT. I have always been of the opinion that PH was a ACC level backup pg at best and that was before the injuries. I know we lost SC Jr. but he wasn't known as a PG same with SA. I just think MT took a big chance regarding PH.

OK, so maybe SCJ MIGHT have made a difference. That still doesn't excuse MT's poor play calling, lack of in-game adjustments, and horrible player utilization during games.

  • We haven't had good pg play since GV - EH. Hard to coach around that. See GW and 2010-11 for 1,000,000,000 time!

Not every acc team is stacked at every position, freaking unc is playing without a center now, somehow we managed to spin that as a mismatch/advantage in unc's favor. Complain about the point all you want be we still have a very talented group and somewhat experienced group of 2's and 3's, a lotto pick center, a sr pf, and some good freshman.

Jordan Williams made that guard play better. Prior to Jordan's arrival GV and EH only made the tournament as freshmen.

False, we went to the tourney gv's jr year w Dave Neal as the starting center, lost to Memphis first round, gv basically strapped the entire team on his back that season

Stoglin could have been a great pg but turge decided not to play him at the point, he played pg for gw and put up solid assist numbers (with a better supporting cast).

  • GW did absolutely nothing with TS + PH. Also TS many times in ACC play gave up more than he put up (opposing guard has a career night). We haven't had a winning combo at the guard spots since GV & EH.

That's right 7-9 record got a tourney bid. Jordan Williams made the guard play better. FACT!

Roddy is coming...If he and Nick or Seth won't become a great combo, then wait a year for Trimble.

A better question is what type of offense DOES Turge run? I remember his intro press conference where one of the reporters asked him what kind of ball he plays, probably in reference to the anemic offense (low scoring variety) of his previous teams. Sensing the nature of the question, his response was, 'winning type of ball'. LOL.

Don't mistake my criticism of Turge. I WANT him to succeed. If he succeeds, the team succeeds. He's our coach for the next six friggin more years - speaking of which, when asked the generous duration (8-yr) of his contract, he replied, 'of course, I wouldn't have left (friggin A&M) for anything less!' My initial reaction to his statement was that I liked his confidence. In retrospect, it wasn't confidence, but rather the opposite. And to think that there was actually some discussion last year fearful that he'd leave us for Kansas.
