SI: Mark Turgeon at Fault for Terrapins NIT Fate

  • Next year is going to be a real battle to make the tournament again, I'm afraid.

The ACC is going to be the toughest basketball conference in history next year.

len looked all- world against non-conference opponents. any one have the splits on those games? hyphen.

Pe'Shon was awesome, too. Our OOC schedule was detrimental for so many reasons. Primarily because it gave everyone a false sense that this team was really good. Made everyone forget how young we are and how much of an issue the PG position was going to be.

    interesting read

No, it is a painful read, particularly damaging is this:

"... The soft-spoken coach did more with less in College Station than he’s done thus far in fertile College Park, where first-class talent is returning in the aftermath of the Williams regime.

Turgeon’s talent repository this year was better than NIT quality. At his disposal: a lottery pick, coveted transfer, veteran glue guy and a host of young talent underscored by a heralded freshman class. At least two dozen coaches in the field of 68 would swap rosters for that assortment of players..."

If Alex Len goes to the NBA next year and blows up as a Rookie it will be interesting to hear what people have to say around here.

I think I will take the under here...!

Len should be better and more dominant. He has shown flashes but net net, he hasn't made a huge jump from last year.

Its too easy and convenient to balme all our problems on the lack of a quality point guard and youth. Where were these glaring deficiencies against Kentucky, NC State, and Duke.

Turgeon created the problems with Stoglin.

I don't think Turge is a bad coach. I don't think he's used to being in this position. When he took over A&M, they had top 10 talent and were pre-season #7. Gillispe left him stocked.

Why do you think Len, with his obvious physical weakness, is going to "dominate" in the NBA against real men?

I don't at all. I doubt he'll even have a decent career in the NBA. Clearly though, he should have been more dominant in the piss poor ACC.

Then that will be recognized by the selection committee, and the ACC will get many teams selected. It's happened before with other conferences.

  • I don't like the fact our coach is referred to as "soft spoken".

Not really. The ACC has only one team in the top 25. Earlier in the year it may have looked that way but not now.

You mean two teams in the top 10, right? And UNC is a top 20 team right now even if they aren't ranked.

  • Thanks. I missed Miami. I still think the Big 12 overall is better than the ACC.

  • BTW, although it's under the SI banner this isn't written by an SI writer but instead by some radio talk show host in Syracuse.

They're pretty close but the ACC has the edge in the conference RPI rankings.

RPI rankings aside, the ACC has always been a tougher conference in the sense that there are many tougher away games/atmospheres. You need to bring it every day in the ACC in a way that you don't in the Big 12. Even the better basketball schools in the Big 12 (I'm thinking Oklahoma, OSU, Texas, A&M, Tech under Knight) are way bigger football schools that basketball schools. Never been the case in the ACC. I think this shows in the way the entire team under Turgeon doesn't quite bring it the way they need to every single night, especially on the road.

Did he light all his bongs and joints for him or something?

I'm not saying who is right or wrong in the Stoglin case but I think his clashes with turge had some impact on the decision. Players getting high is pretty common...we hung out with a certain all american and let's just say we didn't just read books and play nintendo. We knew quite a few of the ball players actually.

As for wasting Len's talents...this is 2013. Programs don't have the luxury of developing lottery picks into productive players. You have a small window to get the most out of what you have with guys like him and that's why your are paid $2+ million annually. Some of you need to realize this. This seasons has been frustrating because we have talent and are just not a smart team. We are a low bball iq team...it's conveyed almost in every broadcast, sometimes clearly, sometimes subtlety. Some of that is on the players and some is certainly on the coaches...you cannot deny that.

yea like the honey badger... i mean i'm sure stoglin wasnt given 3 4 5 or even 6 chances to get his shit together. You are a real jackass if you cant stop smoking pot when millions of dollars are on the line.

    Pic Sigs are for losers.

  • To add Lottery picks especially big men don't have to be special players to be lottery picks just have upside. We get as much as we can out of len given our dumb PG's and Len's current ability.

Like isaid, I'm not one to state how it should have gone down...apparently you've reached your own conclusions to be very judgmental. Now he may have failed 6 drug tests! Listen, the lifestyle is there and some people don't view it the same way as others. Gary may have not viewed it as turge does. We had a buddy who workd the front desk at the greenbelt hotel where all the teams playing the bullets would stay. The request for dope was regular. The all American I spoke of...a lottery pick. I'm saying Stoglin got blindsided, but lets not pretend the policy is applied all the time to all cases. I think your naive if you think programs all take that type of approach.

Yeah, you'd have to be pretty blind to not see that Len has the skills and the potential. It's the coaches job to get the production out of his players and we all know Len had the ability to be more productive than he was. Your point doesn't address that.
